dman748 1256 Posted May 4, 2018 Posted May 4, 2018 A couple of days late on the draw about this, but... former KFOR sports director Bob Barry Jr.'s 2015 death in a motorcycle accident has become the subject of a campaign ad by Gary Richardson, who is running for the Republican nomination to replace the term-limited Mary Fallin as Governor of Oklahoma. The ad -- which began running last weekend -- was intended to position Richardson as an anti-illegal immigration candidate, highlighting the fact that BBJ was killed when his motorscooter hit the side of a car driven an undocumented Mexican immigrant, Gustavo Gutierrez, who was driving without a license and was performing an illegal U-turn when the accident occured. (Gutierrez was given a 15-year prison sentence for vehicular homicide and cocaine possession in January 2016.) The ad omits mention that BBJ was not wearing a helmet, which resulted in the head injuries from which he succumbed. KFOR/KAUT General Manager Wes Milbourn noted that station management was "displeased with their advertising tactics and the exploitation of Bob Barry Junior," but FCC rules required them to air the ad as it met certain political advertising requirements. Richardson said he would rescind the ads from KFOR/KAUT, but he will run them on other Oklahoma television stations. BBJ's son, Matt, released this statement about the ad, and, to say the least, was not pleased, especially given that Richardson never sought permission from the Barry family and thought that KFOR/KAUT management would contact them about it: The ad in question: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDWg3POYVkE Could KFOR had chosen to decline the request to air the ad and if so what would be the consequences from the FCC for not airing the ad?
broadcastfan9751 140 Posted May 4, 2018 Posted May 4, 2018 Could KFOR had chosen to decline the request to air the ad and if so what would be the consequences from the FCC for not airing the ad? For ads run by candidates themselves, FCC rules require stations to accept those ads if they make time available to at least one candidate in the election. If it was a third-party ad (like a Super PAC ad), the station could decline to air it, but in this case they have to accept it. If a station fails to comply with the rules for candidate-run ads, the candidate could file a complaint with the FCC and they could issue a ruling requiring the station to run the ad or the station could get fined. 1

Thank God all those democrats running for office in 2018 will be boycotting the Sinclair stations by denying them those vital campaign ad dollars. Right??? That tactic would suck Sinclair dry in no time. #democratsboycottsinclair 4
MidwestTV 1245 Posted May 4, 2018 Posted May 4, 2018 Adweek, for whatever reason, has decided to restrict site access to TVNewser, TVSpy, and AdAgency unless you sign up. That means unless you decide to make an account, all you can do is read the headlines and comments. It's easily one of the most bizarre and pompous decisions I've seen of a website. 1
24994J 5629 Posted May 4, 2018 Posted May 4, 2018 Pro tip: unlike a lot of other paid subscription sites, I discovered that if you open the page, and click to stop loading it in full as soon as the article is visible, you miss out on some links and the comments, but you get the content unblocked. That's not really going to help mobile users, though. 3
SFTV 532 Posted May 5, 2018 Posted May 5, 2018 KGO’s Mike Shumann out after 24 years amid jacket scandal. http://abc7news.com/sports-anchor-and-reporter-mike-shumann-resigns-from-abc7/3430358/ Does this mean former NBC Sports Bay Area Mindi Bach who has been filling in gets the permanent spot? Or does Rick Quan who is limited Part Time gets promoted?

I still use an RSS reader; Reeder on iOS still shows the entirety of articles from the Adweek network and the reading mode on Safari also strips the idiotic firewall.

Georgie56 3326 Posted May 6, 2018 Posted May 6, 2018 How many journalist families are there in the country? I’m only aware of the Ogles in OKC, the Ponce brothers and father in Chicago, and the Magers brothers (both retired). 1

ColtFromGulfcoast 731 Posted May 6, 2018 Posted May 6, 2018 The Rascons, although they're in more than one city. Jacob is on KPRC/Houston (and formerly of NBC News) and his dad, Art, is on KTRK. Jacob's brother and Art's son, Matt, works at WHDH in Boston, and then, Dan Rascon (Art's brother), works at KUTV in Salt Lake City. 2
TexasTVNews 1378 Posted May 6, 2018 Author Posted May 6, 2018 KFOR has Kevin and Kent, KOCO has Abigail, KWTV has Katelyn and Kelly, KOKH has nobody. It's a family tradition of The Ogles of OKC. The legends lives on. 2

JCB4TV 351 Posted May 7, 2018 Posted May 7, 2018 KFOR has Kevin and Kent, KOCO has Abigail, KWTV has Katelyn and Kelly, KOKH has nobody. I wonder how long Kevin & Kent last at KFOR after Sinclair takes over. 2

I’m only aware of the Ogles in OKC, the Ponce brothers and father in Chicago, and the Magers brothers (both retired). Patrick and Megan McGrath (father and daughter). Patrick was a longtime anchor/reporter for WTTG, retired awhile back. Megan is still a morning reporter for WRC. The late Stan Chambers and Jaime Chambers (grandfather and grandson) Lester and Stefan Holt (father and son) Robin and Sally-Ann Roberts (sisters) Dr. Frank and Storm Field (father and son) Sue and Liz Palka (mother & daughter) Those are the few I can remember off the top of my head.
dman748 1256 Posted May 7, 2018 Posted May 7, 2018 Don't forget about the Barry's in OKC (Bob Sr. and Jr.) even though both did Sports both were a father-son sports anchoring team until Bob Sr. retired in 2008 1

ColtFromGulfcoast 731 Posted May 7, 2018 Posted May 7, 2018 Lacey Lett (of KAUT's Rise and Shine) is a relative of the Ogle family as well. 2

CircleSeven 1960 Posted May 7, 2018 Posted May 7, 2018 And those are the Weigel Broadcasting Weigels, right? They're kin to the founder of WCIU, John Weigel (Tim's father and Rafer & Jenniffer's grandfather). Shockingly enough they kept the Weigel name all this time, even though its been owned by the Shapiro family almost the entire existence. 4
