Conjecture at this point. I found it interesting that KTLA reported in the 9:30am news block this morning that Elex is leaving KTLA. Is he joining that station? KTLA did a lot of reporting on the competition when Sam Rubin was around. I haven't seen as much since Melvin Robert took over. I watch KTLA most mornings and did not see them report on Ellen Leyva's retirement as a comparison, so just something to ponder on......

In other news, reporter Nic Garcia has joined FOX 11 from ABC 30 in Fresno.

He just did a live report from Beverly Hills at 5:30pm on the FOX 11 News at Five.

I suspect that Elex's upcoming position is a national gig, of some kind.  For him to join KTLA, it perhaps would be for another anchor position, because I doubt that he would settle for anything less than that at a local station after being a weeknight co-anchor on FOX 11.  As far as I can tell, no current anchors have announced any departures from KTLA, either.

Most likely he’s joining FOX News Bill Melugin who good friends with him congratula,Ted him on his departure post.

I don't think it's a coincidence that this move happened shortly after a new GM came to town.

While there's no doubt that Elex is hard working, his problem is that he ends up making everything about himself, whether it's intentional or not. He has gotten used to getting his way with everything at KTTV through the years of a revolving carousel of news managers, and I'm guessing that is coming to an end. I heard that his China Newsom trip a few years ago cost 40k! That's an insane amount of money to throw around for a last place station and at a company that values frugality above all. I'm sure the inauguration trip cost a fair amount of money too. I don't think the new management was going to put up with his behavior for very long.

While I admired his attempts to elevate California politics, I personally found his style to be somewhat sycophantic, and for what was ostensibly a statewide political show, he sure spent a lot of time dwelling on LA city politics.

I doubt he's staying within the company. It would have been announced in a corporate press release if he were. He also wouldn't be leaking stuff to the LA Times. That "Look at how NICE Elex Michaelsen is" story the day before his own announcement didn't come out of nowhere.

As for his replacement, I think it's a question of whether he's replaced at all, or to what degree. Seattle just blew up their PM lineup to basically be a Headline News style newswheel with taped news blocks. The Bay Area has gone to a solo anchor format for most shows.

I think you did a good job explaining what we were all thinking.  Local stations don’t really do news trips anymore lol that the best way I can name it, but you’re right I’ve barely seen a news station send a reporter or anchor on assignment to another city or another country for that matter. I remember he covered both political conventions in Milwaukee and Chicago respectively yes he covered the inaugurations, and yes went to China no other LA station did that they could’ve just used a FOX News correspondent to cover all of that. As for him making think about himself a lot yeah I noticed that a lot too but there no denying he a hard worker. I don’t think they’ll be a replacement I’ll be Christine, Marla and Susan Hirisuna.

Here is KTTV's farewell to Elex piece from GDLA. Not sure if they did something more elaborate on the PM news.

Could he be WABC’s new weekend morning co-anchor?

I'd lean no, but if Torres or Novarro are retiring in the next couple years, I guess it's possible.

Why do I feel like I saw something that Elex is staying in California?

I read he is likely destined for a role with the 'California Post', the sister publication of the 'New York Post.'

So he could be headed there.

What do you mean? Christine Devine has been the lead co-anchor at FOX11 since the early 90s. Outlasting co-anchors Chris Harris (RIP), Bob Donley, John Beard, Carlos Amezcua, Jeff Michael, Dan Cohen and now Elex Michaelson.

She has as much experience and gravitas in the market as Colleen Williams and Pat Harvey.

Elex Michealsom linked-in page says he’s primary anchor for all breaking news events. Don’t believe me look it up.

It appears as if CNN is introducing Michaelson to its audience gradually ahead of his show's launch, as I just saw him present a video package of a sit-down interview he conducted with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Tony Blair at the end of Kaitlan Collin's program a short time ago.

Im glad Christine Devine gets her own show at 5pm. She finally can shine in her own light. I hope they don’t give her any co-anchor she deserves to lead something.

As of tonight (12/22), KTTV has moved Good Nite L.A. and West Coast Wrap to the 10:00 PM hour. The two shows re-air at 11:00 PM on KCOP.

Interesting move to cancel the 10pm show but makes sense since they have a primetime newscast from 8-10pm on KCOP.

The guide still shows the 10pm news and Good Nite LA at 11pm as before for next work week (Dec. 29, 2025-Jan. 2, 2026), so it might just be for this week due to it being Christmas Week with less people watching news but we will see. If this is permanent in 2026, then these changes would be such a blow to the flagship newscast that they have been producing for years. It seems like they want to take a page from WFLD’s book with them shortening their 9pm news during the week. As for 11pm, many other FOX O&Os produce newscasts in that half hour without any issues and with KTTV moving Good Nite LA to 10:30pm, it shows to me that they are not (fully) confident in some of the choices they make as well as competing with CBS LA, NBC 4, KTLA 5, ABC 7, Univision 34, and Telemundo 52 in the latest timeslot. Again, could just be a holiday experiment, so let’s keep an eye on things.

It’s probably a holiday thing, that would be a huge blow to cancel it flagship newscast I would presume because of low staff.

I looked at the week after New Year's and I can conclude this week's changes indeed was because of Christmas.

They blew out the first two hours of GDLA this morning in favor of streaming LiveNow from FOX. Again, most likely due to lower viewership around the holidays. It was interesting to see since LiveNow was airing a live feed of GDNY.
