SuitSnob 19
Re: Male Fashion Disasters: Now with My9 and CW11 (and the Usual Suitspects...) Suprise, itty-bitty update after last week's epic post. SuitSnob is in complete crisis mode...the world has been turned upside-down. Have the local anchors gotten together and said Let's mess with Suitsnob's head for trashing our clothing? Is this some Halloween prank? It is Saturnalia...the world is upside-down and topsy turvy.... Telly...you'd better brace yourself... First, Ron Corning has not made a single fashion gaffe in almost two weeks (not counting his usual Casual Friday I Don't Have to Wear a Tie Even Though Everyone Else Does crap. He's actually looked neat, fashionable and professional. Then today, Ron Malcolm 1) Wore the right collar for his Windsor Knot and 2) Did NOT button the bottom button of his suit coat!!! HOORAY!!!! HOORAY!!! HOORAY!!!! So, the bad boys of local air have at least temporarily gotten their act together...so how does the pendulum swing to even-out the universe? One of the Golden Boys, possibly THE Golden Boy: Phil Lipoff has gotten invaded by the body snatchers. (Telly, I warned you this was going to be bad) Oh Phil...handsome, dapper Phil of the perfect suits, crisp French-cuff shirts and tasteful, luxurious ties...how did you fall into the rut of the Don Dahlers of the world? Yes boys and girls...yesterday Phil BUTTONED THE BOTTOM BUTTON OF HIS SUIT COAT WHILE SEATED AT THE ANCHOR DESK!!!! Why Phil....WHY?!?!?!??!?! :'( Note the buckling at the waist....what a "waste" of perfect tailoring. :'( SuitSnob thought this was just an accident, until THIS morning: Note how the area between the two buttons opens like a window...with a peek-a-boo effect for his tie. It went on all through the broadcast...he even stood for some segements and unbuttoned his coat...and then took time to double-button as he sat again: In these three shots that were captured in rapid succession you can see how subconsciously he started pushing and fussing with it, trying to stop the gap from opening like a giant eyeball...look at his expression on his face, as if to say Um...duh...why does my perfectly-tailored suit that I spent so much money on suddenly have a mind of its own...am I being haunted by some Suit Poltergeist that is making this happen...it can't be that I suddenly started to button the bottom button-what are the odds of THAT? DUH!!!! This is so strange and riddiculous that I can only believe two poissible scenarios: 1) This is all a bad dream. SuitSnob is having some sort of narcotic episode from inhaling too many dry cleaning fluids. 2) There is some secret fraternity of male on-air talent in this town that meets in some secret, smoke filled back room of an Irish pub...THEY put him up to this to get back at me, hoping it would drive Poor SuitSnob to madness! Maybe there is a pool to see how long it would take me to post this? Does the winner get a free session with Don Dahler's blind fashion consultant? (Can anyone think of a rational reason why a man with so much fashion sense and sophistication would do this to himself all of the sudden?) Mr. Lipoff is in Dapper Detention until further notice. Due to distinct efforts and improvement, Ron and Rob are granted Fashion Amnesty (on this site at least, I need them as models for part two of my article at NYNW.net..sorry guys...) for the month of November (barring anything seriously out of the norm, such as wearing a lime green shag tie). SuitSnob needs to have a cry. Hold me, Telly!!!! :'( :'( :'( Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/405-male-fashion-disasters/page/9/#findComment-22343 Share on other sites

SuitSnob 19
Re: Male Fashion Disasters: Phil's Fall From Fashion!!! Oh, the cards, letters and private messages SuitSnob gets: Dear Mr. SuitSnob: is there anyone on local news who ALWAYS dresses well? Dearest Mister SuitSnob: Are there men on local news who are always stylish and professional and never have etiquette or fashion gaffes? To His Royal Highness SuitSnob Self-Appointed King of Local News Male On-Air Talent Fashion: Are there any men who are above reproach by you? The answers, patient readers are yes, yes and yes. This post is dedicated to the Good Guys-the ones who seem to mange on a daily basis to: 1) Wear suits that fit properly and not stupidly button all the buttons to the point of looking like a stupid stiff and cutting off their blood supply. 2) Wear the appropriate collar for their tie knot and keep their tie neat and tidy, and… 3) Wear attractive ties that don’t push the boundaries of Technicolor and elegant, non-distracting pocket squares (if used). 4) Wear clean, crisp shirts and even manage to keep their French cuffs looking nice and neat while reporting in the field. Is SuitSnob too suit-snobby? Are his standards impossible to attain? These guys prove seemingly with ease and grace that SuitSnob Standards are attainable by paying just a bit more attention to one’s dress. A few men on this list have had a cameo appearance on the Fashion Don’t list from time to time, which does not automatically disqualify them for this list by the way…Nobody’s perfect (except maybe Jim Rosenfield). All of the following photos were taken since Saturday to prove that SuitSnob didn’t have to look too far to find the Good Guys. Here are a select few in no particular order: (DRUMROLL) Maurice DuBois: Master of pinstripe suits and high-quality, understated ties. Bill Evans: Suits that fit nicely, though with ease of movement for the weather guy…nicely-balanced accessories. John Elliot: Goes a bit off-center in his choices which matches his off-beat weather presentation nicely. Not necessarily what I would recommend for every man, but “suits” him well and always wears high-quality merchandise. Dave Carlin: Never looks like he is trying too hard but always perfectly put together-even when on-location with a story. Charles Leaf: Knows how to tie a Windsor knot that makes a statement without getting too large-and wears the correct collar to accommodate it. Also knows how to go for a bit of color without getting too Sopranos. How does he always look so damn neat and pressed while doing a story? John Marshall-no flash, about as middle-of-the road as it gets. But always looks neat and professional NJ Burkett: A welcome touch of preppy works well with his sophisticated, urbane reporting style (we’ll ignore the purple blazer from two weeks ago) Jeff Peques: What can I say? He’d be at the top of my list for any civilian readers wanting to know which man to emulate when dressing themselves. Looks like he was born to wear suits-always sharp whether reporting a hurricane or (too rarely in my opinion) at the anchor desk. Smashing ties too…just simply one of the best Reid Lamberty: Very much matches Peguse in style choices. Looks like he really pays attention to his personal style, but not too much. Gotten a bit bolder in choices since moving to Fox…his talent and great wardrobe is now desperately needed at CBS2 (Serves you right you termination-happy JERKS!!!) Every man should want to be Reid when they grow up. And last and certainly not least-I could argue he is the best-dressed man on local air… The Great Jim Rosenfield. Understated, yet stylish suits…neat four-in-hand tie knots…always a perfect fit while seated or standing. Face it-talent is great and he’s got it in spades, but damn it if Rosenfield doesn’t just LOOK the part! A few obvious choices did not make this list today-especially Class AAA Dressers Lee Goldberg, Ernie Anastos and Nick Gregory. Not to mention Marcus Solis, David Ushery…the list is actually quite long, (and maybe this display of the better dressers is long overdue amongst my snark) so I couldn’t post a shot of every man that consistently dresses well. And to those of you still in the doghouse: Maybe it’s time to ask some of these colleagues where they are buying their snappy-looking outfits and where they get them tailored (Yes boys…it’s called a TAILOR…it’s a nice man or woman who adjusts the suit to fit your body correctly…what a concept!!!) Well…that was a refreshing change of pace…now back to being a mean son of a bitch!!! SuitSnob 19
Re: Male Fashion Disasters: ALL-NICE Edition!!! Now that we have all that annoying niceness out of the way... Let's go after the STUPID SLOBS!!!! Starting with the worst of the worst to really cleanse the thread of dapper perfection, let’s really get things going with Don Dahler! Mr. Dahler’s ability to reveal worse and worse suits as the weeks go by is truly amazing. I can barely figure out where to start… OK, first of all, is it just me or is he wearing a miss-matched jacket and pants? Now look at the jacket buttons…we are beyond the fact that he buttoned the bottom button…what the hell is this?!?!? This is some strange suit…an OFFSET button single-breasted suit?!?! Huh? Where in the name of Ralph Lauren did he find this thing? Telly…other Suitwatchers…have you ever seen offset buttons on a single-breasted suit? I think I have seen such a thing in a high-fashion, expensive, perfectly-tailored Italian suit before…but on a cheap, mainstream American suit? And as with all of his suits it does not fit around his neck or shirt collar….SuitSnob admits to being generally picky but this is not even in the ballpark of fit. Is this some charity thing where Dan insists on only buying suits from emotionally disturbed, blind tailors in rehab? Is this like a "Factory Seconds" suit where people pay half-price because of a mistake in construction? That is Ok for boxer briefs, but people can actually SEE a suit!!! And yes, this tie is still ugly. George Zimmer should not allow his grandchildren’s finger-paintings to be turned into tie patterns: Dear God this man is an embarrassment to television journalism, the men’s fashion industry and New York City in general. Only the WCBS management could possibly allow this on the air. Once again: WHERE DID THEY FIND THIS GUY?!?!?! (deep, cleansing breath) Continuing the round-up… Sorry Telly, Phil did it AGAIN on Sunday… I just don’t get it…what happened to Golden Boy of Weekend Mornings? And it’s not like Fox or CBS where it is rampant…not one other man at ABC does this. EVER! The acolyte has become the master…Jeff Smith-YOU need to give PHIL sartorial advice!!! Moving right along…. Duke Castiglione continues to improve his wardrobe game whilst being plagued by lopsided tie knots: Damn…I liked the outfits too. Oh Duke, if only you knew what a nice Half-Windsor would do for you…get Nick Gregory to teach you how to tie one on! Or just straighten your four-in-hand knots before air! I picked on this guy Carter Evans last week for doing a Double Corning…but I suspected that that if he suited up properly he would look damn good. As usual, SuitSnob was correct: In the UPN9 studio alongside Carter, Harry Martin continues to sacrifice Nice Outfits on the altar of The God of Buttoning the Bottom Button: You see how unnatural it looks with his hand squeezed in the pocket here…Harry, buddy…HUMOR me!!! Ask your clearly competent tailor the hows and whys of buttoning suit coats-let HIM/ HER explain to you how you are making a mess of your appearance! On a positive note, I like what I have been seeing of this guy Josh Einiger on WNBC…I could see him making the SuitSnob All-Stars list: This man clearly knows style…and I bet he didn’t even have to read my column!!! Still over at WNBC I didn’t catch these two gentlemen’s names…but their neckties speak for themselves: Looks like SuitSnob needs to spread a little more love over at Channel 4…EEK! Now, we accidentally flip over to Channel 11… I don’t expect this problem to correct itself any time soon, but here is another shot of the problem Jim Watkins has with the tailoring on the front of his suit coats: Why does a perfectly-trim man fight The Battle of the Bulge? BAD TAILORING!!! And still at CW11…Help Me Howard is a terrific guy, but clearly needs a dose of Help Me SuitSnob!!!! Sometimes, not having HDTV is a BLESSING!!! Seriously, do you see why there is a SuitSnob Law about not wearing heavy patterns on-air? Especially in the studio when you are in close-up. This is so loud Helen Keller is screaming for mercy. RANDOM SHOT OF CHRIS WRAGGE LOOKING ESPECIALLY NICE TIME: END OF RANDOM SHOT OF CHRIS WRAGGE LOOKING ESPECIALLY NICE TIME And let’s close with our friend Lonnie. I swear, Lonnie is trying…I can see how he can’t keep up with his fashion lessons, what with trying to figure out what all those numbers and squiggly things are on the maps he is pointing to…Lonnie went well over a week without buttoning his bottom button…he was going to be conspicuously absent from today’s update. But them at the 11th hour…the 11 broadcast tonight as a matter of fact…he buttoned it. Oh the shame….the shame… Close-up for dramatic effect: Right next to Wragge who was having yet another dashing, dapper day…almost adding insult to injury… Sometimes with these boys I feel like a parent potty-training a toddler. You think they have mastered the task and it is no longer a concern…but then they have an accident and you wonder if it was all for naught…(sigh) Whew…all this going from nice to mean has poor SuitSnob feeling like Sybil at a Loony Bin Reunion. It is time for bed, in hopes that tomorrow will be a better day… Love and Kisses, SuitSnob Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/405-male-fashion-disasters/page/9/#findComment-22741 Share on other sites

SuitSnob 19
Re: Male Fashion Disasters: ALL-NICE Edition!!! This is an unplanned post. Which is sort of like an unplanned pregnancy…after nine months or so you just have to get it out. Nine months is also approximately the amount of time Phil Lipoff has been the weekend anchor at WABC. In that time we have seen a few ups and downs… In the beginning….Phil wore perfect outfits every day. And SuitSnob said it was good. High-quality, expertly cut and tailored suits. French cuffs without fail. Neat, natty pocket squares more often than not…and speaking of not-oh the glorious tie knots when he first escaped that cesspool to the North known as “Boston”…masterfully tied, Windsor knots that tucked so neatly into his medium-spread collars. And the ties themselves; enough to make SuitSnob kvell…of the utmost quality and taste. The fact that he was handsome as hell just added the perfect frame for this fashion plate. OK, we did have the one hiccup when he wore the ultra-wide collar once…. But does SuitSnob hold grudges? SuitSnob is all-powerful, but he is a forgiving God of the Sartorial Arts, and thankfully Phil never did it again. SuitSnob sang the praises of Phil to the East and West, TellyGenic sang them to the North and South. And it was good. Somehow the advanced and tricky Windsor knots gave way to a simpler four-in-hand knot (which SuitSnob suspects are actually the four-in-hand times-two-but that is for another post altogether…). Was SuitSnob a bit let down at this slight reduction of formality and technique? A bit. Did SuitSnob condemn Mr. Lipoff for this? Not at all…and only mentioned it is passing once with no particular judgments. Months went on and SuitSnob told the Fashion Faithful frequently that Mr. Lipoff was amongst the best-dressed men on local news…he was possibly the only man who could challenge Lee Goldberg for best-dressed at WABC. SuitSnob never had to worry about Phil. Hell-SuitSnob even used Phil as his AVATAR! Until recently. As has been well-covered, Phil joined the sartorially-challenged such as Lonnie Quinn, Don Dahler, Harry Martin and (CENSORED DUE TO PROMISE TO GIVE CERTAIN INDIVIDUALS FASHION AMNESTY FOR THE MONTH) and out of nowhere started buttoning the bottom button of his suit coat. As the faithful knows, this looks simply dorky while standing, but when seated at the anchor desk it just looks terrible and makes the man look stiff, uncomfortable and wrinkled. What seemed to be accidental became routine…and in an insult to his tailor’s craft he started to destroy the line of his suit by buttoning up while seated. That was bad. But now it is WORSE!!! We all know that buttoning the bottom button is the #1 fashion “don’t” for men in business wear. Or is it? No my children, my faithful…my fans and detractors, my acolytes and enemies. There is one thing worse. Something so dark and evil-so abusive to the suit that I never raised the possibility before…I wanted to protect you. Never in my worst nightmares did I imagine this would be on a local television screen… Yes, there is one thing worse than buttoning all the buttons. (Take a deep breath…) BUTTONING THE BOTTOM BUTTONS WHILE LEAVING THE TOP BUTTON UNBUTTONED!!!!! (SuitSnob now drops all pretenses of deity and formality) Phil, what the #&@% are you THINKING?!?!? If you want the front of your torso to look that silly, wear a Mickey Mouse t-shirt (you do work for Disney) when reading the news! Tell me out there in TVNewsTalk.netland…do we actually need a Fashion Maven to tell us that this just looks ridiculous? And no, this was not an accidental mistake. He started the 9 am broadcast doing this, did a segment where he did an interview with his jacket unbuttoned and then returned to the desk and once again decided that this was a good choice for comfort, attractiveness and formality while anchoring. And again, here he actually fidgets with the front while the camera is on him in a wide shot: Reading back, you will see this is not the first time he was subconsciously fidgeting while on-air. My God…why would he do this to himself? CONFIDENTIAL TO PHIL LIPOFF: Phil: Every day you show up for work wearing what I calculate to be $1500-$3000 of perfectly coordinated, tasteful, professional and stylish business wear. Why go to all that trouble and then destroy it all in the name of something that not only makes you look like an idiot, but clearly makes you uncomfortable to the point that you are distracted from the news itself. You have committed the gravest sin, suit abuse and just outright stupidity I have ever seen in over 20 years of watching local news. Don Dahler buttoning all the buttons can be forgiven due to the fact that he is wearing atrocious suits anyway and clearly gets dressed in the dark while pulling his clothing out of a hamper. Harry Martin? He has been doing it consistently for years and you just can’t teach an old dog new tricks. But you? You know better and have never done this before-it is so bizarre that I almost want to have delusions of grandeur and (once again) ponder if your colleagues dared you to do this to see if I noticed and dutifully responded like Pavlov’s dog-the sudden collapse of your appearance is so ludicrous it would almost seem plausible. Is it possible that you are being blackmailed? Having a complete personal breakdown? Brain tumor? Whatever person or force is causing you to defile your suit every weekend must be stopped. We are here for you Phil we want you to get through this!! As 2007 draws to a close, we can recall many bad dressers and fashion breakdowns. I am sorry to say (and if you told me this was going to happen two months, six months or nine months ago I would never have believed it) that Phil is now the leading candidate for Jackass of the Year for 2007. And frankly, lest Ernie Anastos does the 10 o’clock news wearing a Wonder Woman costume or Lee Goldberg shows up wearing a kilt I don’t see anyone else beating him out for the dishonor. Why?
