  2. Whoops! Someone’s getting an email from a sales rep right now! (Blame the new graphics!)

  3. It's too small of a market, NBC Universal isn't interested.

  4. Don's always struck me as a bit arrogant of times. I agree with his political opinions, but there was always something that rubbed me the wrong way. The fact they kept him and got rid of the likable and no baggage Robin Meade upset me in a way. Her ratings were always better than anything CNN's done with mornings over the past decade. If I was in Licht's shoes, I'd bring back Robin and the Morning Express crew, perhaps in a different place than Atlanta. CNN This Morning isn't bad, but the ratings won't increase until Don is fired or resigns at this point.

  5. I think the economics still work, I think the trouble is that if you wait too long, what happened to newspapers might end up happening to TV stations. You better cash out now or you might end up having to sell for a fraction of what you can get now.

  6. It's indeed sad. I've never been a fan of Lemon just from how he presents himself on television, I always found him as arrogant and annoying at times. His style of reporting is why I don't appreciate the state of cable news. This Variety article just confirms he is a toxic person to work with as well. I was really surprised when he wasn't let go last year, but with CNN This Morning's ratings in the toilet, CNN should cut their losses with Lemon.

  7. Nice to see they're both getting new shows. I think it will be weirder to me not seeing Marilyn on the People's Court. I'll miss so much of the elements People's Court had, such as the music, the iconic logo, the typewriter and gavel sound effects, and Curt Chaplin's deadpan introductions. Now I'm waiting to see if Byron brings back judges Joe Brown, Alex Ferrer or Lynn Toler back to Daytime TV. I just feel Byron's new shows won't be the same compared to WB's longrunners.

  8. Just saw a promo for WCCO’s Next Weather… current “4” logo replaced with just “WCCO”- they’re going the KDKA route. I’ll stomach CBS primetime for a bit to see if I can catch the promo again.

  9. The answer probably is wildly inconsistent. I've seen people who have fallen out with management at one station in a group land at other stations in the same group. I know HR systems, as part of the termination process (be it voluntary or involuntary), have a question that asks if it is beneficial for the employer that they are leaving. I'm sure the answer there can determine a possible future. I also know people who took buyouts had to sign paperwork saying they are ineligible for employment at a station group ever again. And chances are a release from a contract would include similar language. But, considering how difficult of a time TV is having hiring people... there are probably exceptions that can and will be made.

  10. I noticed WCSC's Weather Banners have changed to the GrayONE package. After seeing WCAX's, this is certainly going to be their best look yet. (As of noon today, the new look has not launched, will check at 4pm ET.

  11. This is about the most stunning announcement I have heard. What a big pickup for Hearst - a company that almost never buys stations. (Also, it pretty much wipes them off the "seller" list). It takes Fort Myers-Naples down to one locally owned station.

  12. This package by far is the best one that Gray has pushed out... I do agree that the Barlow series font isn't the greatest choice, but it's so much better than plain Arial/Helvetica...

  14. Once again broadcast news proves itself to be a hotbed of inflated egos and back biting. Sucks. Never been a fan of Lemon's. This confirms things.

  17. We also have to remind ourselves: Edith Waterman is turning 100 in September... I'm pretty sure this had a huge reason behind the decision.

  19. I read the report and now I’m more confused and concerned as to why was this allowed to go on for so long unchecked. There’s been a few time his ratings were subpar so why not get rid of him then? This seems like a set up to an ouster.

  20. Always a bummer to see local ownership selling to a larger corporation, but the economics of it just don't work anymore. The press release also mentions Hearst will be taking over the existing SSA for WZVN as well. It'll be interesting to see if Hearst continues to operate WZVN as its own distinct news operation, or if we'll start to see more cross pollination between the two newsrooms.

  21. Damming indeed. That is some gross, salacious, embarrassing and unconscionable behavior lead by an inflated ego and a self-serving drive for more airtime. And the fact that executives at the time of these communications just let him off the hook each time is just as terrible. If this won't lead to his termination or resignation from the network, nothing will.

  22. After watching all of the newscasts for the past month or so, I will agree that this is a refreshing take on the local news. Yes they still have some flaws/kinks/etc to work out, but overall a very solid local news content.

  23. Cheryl Nelson That said, out of personal curiosity, what are the weather assignments on FOX5, these days, under normal circumstances? Mike on GDNY, Nick at night (ha), but where does everyone else appear?

  24. Just playing catch up with watching WCBS: right now, they seem to be all over the map within a single newscast. I’m hearing: - CBS 2 News - CBS 2 News New York - CBS 2 New York - CBS News New York All depending on who’s speaking - and that’s in the first 5 minutes of the newscast… It seems that they’re headed to CBS News New York - just stumbling there along the way, rather than making the hard cut… (and I’m taking to the theme music and graphics…) Jim

  25. I'm not sure what I think of the new format. I like the use of graphics on the studio screens that give flat walls an appearance of depth. I like the new music (or at least the retro CNN signature -- the rest felt like generic production music). I'm not a fan of the lack of anchor interaction. There are three anchors but they almost never acknowledge each other. They're all pretty much presenting stories individually. Toward the end, John and Kate discussed March Madness with sports contributor Christine Brennan, but that was it. What's the point of three anchors other than to satisfy previous contractual agreements? John and Kate have worked together in the past (used to co-anchor At This Hour before John went to 9-11am Newsroom, before going to New Day) and have great, sarcastic chemistry, but none of that was seen today. It felt "heavily produced" which I actually don't like, especially for a daytime newscast. I wonder how well equipped they will be at handling unexpected stories if they don't have maps, graphics and camera shots planned in advance. Will they be slower? Also felt like fewer panels or discussions with experts with a greater focus on live reporters in the field. More reporting is good but I think cable news viewers have become accustomed to panels/debates. The whole broadcast overall felt kind of lifeless, and I'm a fan of these three anchors.

  26. Initial thoughts: interesting concept. The stand-ups, floor-to-ceiling graphics, and camera pans from one part of the studio to another reminded me of CNN’s election night coverage, which is probably not an accident. Creates a more active and fast-paced feeling. As others have said, no graphics overhaul yet. Lower thirds and bug are all the same. Some elements drawing from the new logo did appear sporadically. Some of the standing felt excessive, though. I almost felt bad for the anchors. I only watched the first 10 minutes but I didn’t see anyone sit down once. Even the panel discussion I saw involved everyone standing and chatting around a table. It was almost distracting. I suspect they will recalibrate some of this over time.

  29. Had to look back- but it looks like John started weekend AMs in September 2022. And thats true- during his entire PIX run John has anchored the main AM (with Suki, Lynne), 5pm, 6pm, 10pm, early AM , and now weekend AM slot. I must say him and Kirstin work really well together.

  30. I think this is the best studio in New York, at least the parts we've seen. Graphics look nice, though the lower-thirds and even the bug ruin it for me. Not a fan of the very thin text bar on top... Text feels squished in there. The way the lower-thirds and the text on the full screens feels clunky to me. But overall I think this is a very big improvement for PIX.
