  1. Yeah, I didn’t mind the idea of two hosts at all, and I never really understood why people took issue with it. The show has always been about contestants, not the people who stand behind the podium, and I’m sure Trebek and Fleming would both concur with that statement. I wasn’t crazy about Bialik, but she seemed like a genuinely nice person who, by many accounts, got on really well with the staff there. EDIT: It looks like she might (emphasis on “might”) be staying on as host of the celebrity show. From USA Today

  3. Bialik and Jennings were pretty good. Found it strange that they opted for alternating dual hosts, but it worked. Bialik aside, Jeopardy had a gargantuan task in filling Trebek's shoes, unfortunately it seems any successor candidate has come under intense public scrutiny. It's just a gameshow hosting job, not the presidency, give the new host a chance.

  4. It’s a company wide initiative to improve our local imaging and branding. Not to be rude but you might as well wait because soon you’ll be able to put every Gray station on your list that doesn’t have a network logo included in their branding.

  5. If I may add to this discussion, I literally make more money as a college student, working a 17-an-hour job than some journalists and meteorologists THAT HAVE degrees too. One station was trying to hire a meteorologist for eight an hour. A Bakersfield TV station was offering 15 an hour to a reporter who would also have to anchor and sometimes even PRODUCE. What does all this tell you? Oh and the grocery stores and fast food restaurants pay no less than $15 as well without a degree.

  9. EDIT: Agree to disgree. I'd like to think of this as ideaological back and forth rather than spamming. To it's credit, News Daily much like NBC News Now is a straightforward newscast. Something MSNBC and the rest of cable news could use more of. It's just one of too many newscasts. As a longtime soap watcher my self I can see why networks would have to cancel them. Ratings are low, they're expensive, the demos are old, they've been in a crap quality production and writing state for years. They aren't exmept from a lack of creativity, you are totally right that they're running on auto pilot. Watching B&B you'd almost think the writers were deliberately trying to get the soap axed. Ideally we could salvage them though a number of methods but that is unlikely. The crux of my ranting is...if or WHEN soaps do get cancelled, can you find something, anything, other than another newscast (or infomercials) to replace them. I say this as someone working in news, watching the trajectory of the industry turn journalism into time filler, not just as a disgruntled viewer that's "bashing news". But alas we are all free to watch whatever we want on streaming---to the detriment of linear TV, and myself a linear tv employee.

  11. I heard this from a colleague who works at an NBC Gray affiliate. It's not an NBC thing. It's a "Gray" thing. Eventually all stations will be removing their affliliation from their logos. The reasoning is to distance the stations from the affiliates and to separate itself from the fake news movement that the national media gets. Basically it's so people trust the LOCAL news and to take on their own branding and identity.

  13. One of the classic news themes from the 1970's has been identified! The 1977 WNEW News Theme was composed by David Amram, and called the "10 O'Clock News Theme". Someone identified him as the composer in a YouTube comment and a Q&A in a 1978 edition of Newsday confirmed it. Looking at his discography, I don't believe that it ever made it onto one of his albums.

  14. Hello everyone, here with our latest edition of "Magnet Newsroom", our election special for student council. Very excited we got Russ Spencer of WAGA to be our announcer for this coverage. In addition, why is the episode so long? We got an interview with our superintendent this week so glad we could get that out before the holiday season (he has never done a local news outlet interview, even when some particular instances arise in the district) and for our students, a special holiday message from all teachers/staff/admin. Very proud of this product, as it is the last episode we will do of 2023, our first year in existence, kind of brings everything full circle. All feedback is always welcome! Thank you so much? For now, I would say so. Because of all the work that goes into each episode, we can't do them live but regardless that's kind of what we're looking at. In addition, YouTube is the best way (for now) to ensure parents and families are able to see it. One of our major problem's we've encountered is increasing viewership as it's up to teacher's discretion on if they show it in class, and a bunch other factors.

  20. New studio and graphics for France 2's news programs, including 20h and 13h. Set is smaller then their last one, which was huge, but is a nice successor and the graphics are just as elegant.

  21. Super interesting how the open has the live time and temp baked into it. Look closely and you'll see it said 3:59 and 61°. It even has a glimpse of the forecast. That has to be a first.

  22. This is a montage of what the Canadian networks did to cover the Alberta provincial election last night. CBC, Radio-Canada, and Global pre-empted their primetime programming with province-wide election night shows, while CTV broadcast separate rolling election shows for both their Calgary and Edmonton stations. Citytv did rolling coverage on their FAST news channel, while the broadcast stations in Alberta aired The Bachelor. Global News also premiered their new network election graphics and music.

Global News has underwent a major rebrand, with new graphics for all of its newscasts (replacing one based on a now-discontinued imaging package used by the main network), and an updated website. There's a lot of white and red (with the local newscasts also adding in some blue accents). At times, especially with the serif fonts, it feels more like the Globe & Mail than Global, but it's definitely a well-needed update.

  26. I agree with this in its entirety. For example, a little over a year ago, WXIA began using a different variety of C Clarity, for open, closes and everything in between. However they only use a specific 30 second cut (open #7 on NMSA), but it quickly got stale in the ears.

  27. In the short of it, they want their balance sheets to show lower operating costs than revenue so it boosts interest from perspective buyers. This is what Meredith did before they sold to Gray. If debt equity is high, this other method will be the most attractive things to Wall Street. You're pointing out the single largest problem with having large-scale station ownership. They have no connection to the community they serve or local values. They only care about finances. You are right that these are part of the value of the station images with the public, but the finances are far abstracted from that. No one is looking or cares. It's all about the balance sheet at the end of the day.
