  4. They're unsalable because, with a few exceptions, they mostly show reruns, terrible reality shows, or reruns of terrible reality shows. Also, I would think most teenagers don't watch linear TV these days... Don't forget about the digital multiplex channels such as MTV2, MTV Live, MTV Classic, etc. Surprisingly, MTV Classic actually shows music videos...but I bet more people watch those on YouTube.

  7. I happened to be watching WHDH last Saturday night and noticed this. Their 10:30 lead was an anchor tracked pkg about a police chase caught on video from Texas that happened several days prior. Wasn’t sure if that was typical for them or not, but I got the sense that maybe it was.

  12. I feel like you're ignoring the movie and TV libraries Paramount owns - which would be the real attraction. But a Big Tech firm being interested in that would undermine a key principle of the Streaming Wars™: that content is interchangeable and ultimately disposable.

The time brokerage between the two stations started in 1994, and the terms of the TBA, while not allowable today, are grandfathered by the FCC because it was established before the federal government put new rules for the operation of TBAs/LMAs/etc. The transfer of WBBH from Waterman to Hearst included assigning the existing WZVN time brokerage agreement to Hearst.

  20. At the time, it was Fox's strategy. They have the NFC contract. Their desire was to own stations in as many NFC markets as possible. Although there is some flex today, Fox stations still broadcast primarily NFC games.

  21. Even as CBS and Fox now more openly carry games that they wouldn't usually have in the past, there's still more Niner games on KTVU than Patriot games on WFXT. At the time of the trade, we were just ending the era where WFXT couldn't air more than two Patriot regular season games a season. But with all this in mind, Patriot games are still more likely to be on WBZ.

Free TV Networks has acquired the naming rights and programming inventory of Defy TV from Scripps, which repurposed the (original) Defy’s former channel space for an OTA relaunch of Ion Plus (a farm of 2000s-2010s dramas carried by other Scripps networks, former Ion/Pax originals and obscure CanCon and ‘90s-early 2000s first-run syndicated series that Scripps relegated to AVOD streaming shortly after acquiring Ion Media in 2021). Free TV Networks relaunched Defy (dropping “TV” from the name, but keeping the logo used by the Scripps iteration) on Monday (July 1) with much of the same programming lineup as the original network. The Free TV Networks iteration of Defy was originally announced in April to be launched as Dare, intended as a copycat to the original Defy (similar to how The 365 and Outlaw are copycats to Bounce TV and Grit, both of which FTVN CEO Jonathan Katz once oversaw), with FTVN cutting a deal with A+E Networks to air unscripted content from its library (the network also initially intended to reuse The CW’s former “Dare to Defy” slogan, which was changed to “Dare to be Bold” for the “relaunch”).

  24. It's like the fact the Kansas City Chiefs games are carried on WDAF-TV, no matter if it's the AFC or the NFC. I could explain the same thing for WJW and the Cleveland Browns. It's like, The NFL probably doesn't care about NFC and AFC markets, they care if the games are being watched or not. That and money. Plus, Fox gained the rights to some of the NFL in 1993.

  25. Ft. Myers will likely be a WFTX subchannel, which is already crowded enough as it is since Ion has no Ft Myers station alone. You'd hope though they would just affiliate with another station just to keep it in HD.

  29. Why would you assume that once Ed passed they would sell? Ed never had no reason to sell, and he said it himself. i'm sure he told his kids not to give in to corporate pressure. Yes, the family has other business properties. The small family own stations are trying to hold on to their business holdings, and they come from an old school generation.

  31. Agreed. Looking at WTVJ around 1992, you really see the 'SVN effect. In my own bias..As someone who got up really early mornings for work, and hearing many journalists talk about the negative sleep effects of 2 AM wake ups, I'm not so set on early morning live broadcasts.

  32. You know what, that’s a good point actually; I’m sorry it skipped my mind. To be fair though, WSVN does air a repeat of the late news during that time, so those viewers do still get relatively (depending on the story) up to-date news, even if it isn’t live.

Funny you mentioned that; my first thought was “thank God it’s 10am and not 4am.” I know it’s become conventional for stations to start at 4 or 4:30am, but is there really that much of an audience there? Granted, most people are at work by 10am, but you can at least get stay at home moms/workers and people in waiting rooms to watch you.

  34. Overall it seems like a downgrade from their previous set which had a lot of areas for dynamic shots using the talent. I’m quite annoyed they aren’t using the far back wall at all, a total waste of valuable studio space that could be used for more versatile shots. Could be a great multipurpose area.   35. Kathleen Bade announced she is leaving KSWB after 16 years which she helped relaunched its newscasts when KSWB became a FOX affiliate after its affiliation switch from CW. prior to KSWB she was at KFMB and KSAZ in a total of 30 years in the industry. her last day will be July 31st.
