Yes, those lower thirds have been used for specials, but they originated on 20/20, with a red line instead of white, and that episode's salacious true crime title.3 points

They are paid millions of dollars. I think they can afford to work when breaking news strikes.2 points

Here are a couple of the opens: …and I get what @NYCshorty said, the graphics and open style would fit as a Fox O&O package, as components of it blend better with the network’s current graphics style than the actual O&O package does.2 points

Uhh, Cox commissioned Stephen Arnold to create Stream for WFXT and WHBQ, both Fox affiliates. As far as the KAKE graphics becoming a group package, Lockwood only has four news-producing stations (WTNZ, WPGX and WDFX outsource their newscasts to Big Four stations in their respective markets), so KTEN and WCAV/WVAW would be the only ones left to switch.1 point
-
Because it is. They are sister stations I think Lockwood is going to switch all their stations to have the same graphics.1 point

WRCB Local 3, the Sarkes Tarzian-owned station in Chattanooga, is in the process of replacing their decade-old set and are currently doing their newscasts from temporary setups throughout their building.1 point

Well, what's also important with this particular point is that... WDAF is #1 in most timeslots. They're not running away with it but they're pretty good. KSHB got rid of their 9pm news on KMCI 20+ years ago because of WDAF's success at 9pm. KCTV used to have 9pm news on KSMO at one point too but got rid of that because of WDAF's success at 9pm. The only real challenger here is KMBC's 9pm news on KCWE which does well because of the KMBC branding and reputation but I think WDAF is still #1 there and by a good bit. If this did happen, KSHB would be destroyed at that timeslot as its been proven 20+ years ago at KMCI.1 point

I mean, this is what the Scripps package should be and what the Fox O&Os should be using too. Granted I don't like the modern flat era at all, but this makes it palatable.1 point

I still remember the story about how WTMJ Radio in Milwaukee lost the rights to produce Badgers content to Learfield because someone at Journal submitted the paperwork late, being overconfident because before the 90s, the UW programs were a national joke and they figured 'we have a long relationship, they'll understand' (the UW Regents did not). They still carried the radio broadcasts, but it was one of the balls that started the inevitable roll towards Learfield/IMG producing anything college and after Journal/Scripps decided not to move the Packers to FM, the team did it for them with iHeart. WBD had two years to seal this up, and I think the dumping of the Turner Sports brand for that awful long WBD Sports monicker was the start of their doom; they quickly adjusted to TNT Sports, but it isn't Turner Sports. Really, I think it was lost the moment they decided to start throwing game simulcasts on TruTV surrounded by gambling and sports talk dreck; you've got Inside the NBA and Kevin Harlan?! Nobody gives a crap about some random multicast only out there for degenerates and to satisfy 'new content' checkoffs in provider agreements because you can't keep running Impractical Jokers all day and all night. The ESPN multicasts make sense to someone, but the TruTV content never will.1 point
-
It's all just for show. WBD doesn't have a leg to stand on. I helped work on a $1.5 billion bid package about fifteen years ago (not for the NBA) and it was rejected because a clueless executive missed signing one section that was required in a part of the proposal. Our proposal was only within $100,000 of the winning bid.... And we almost sued, but the company lawyers said good luck with that. I jumped ship and ended up working for the winning company instead, so I guess it worked out for me in the end.1 point

Was gonna bring up the YT video, but I'll mention it here, if you see the graphics open, anyone who isn't like us into this kinda stuff, you'd think these would be the kinda graphics for a newscast from a FOX O&O especially with the way the FOX logo is shown on screen towards the end of the titles. Also, WXIN kinda being a bit of a copycat with the time/temp/station bug graphics to TEGNA which has a station there in WTHR (NBC).1 point

Their 2-hour delay of live streaming is going to cost them big time in viewers. This is why Nexstar will be the first major TV station owner to fail because it's pure idiocy to delay a live stream and tell viewers to watch the station on live TV to see it live in 2024.1 point

Late to the party. Should have changed from Gray Communications Systems to Gray Media.1 point
-
Seems to be an official change. Their website may be gray.tv, but all over the website, they refer to themselves as Gray Media. Not sure when this was done though...1 point

I give them props for trying different things in order to stand out. But that video walk is almost overwhelming because of its size. I hope that they tinker with the set and make some minor adjustments. I’d like to see a riser behind the desk or something. I did notice that the weather center is unchanged.1 point

Desk is nice, set is in line with their previous abstract looks but it still sucks. What is that shape? South FL? Too many video walls, way to common of a trend on tv now. Welp, at least its better than their early 2010s set The one positive is that the dark lighting masks their previously cheap looking HD. It's also better than the overly fluorescent lighting on TV these days. Other Graham stations looks way better. Wish they drew inspiration from these and added a tropical Florida touch.1 point

I've lost track over the years since WPLG was sold to BH....How much of the station is still operated by Graham or is it basically a perpetual outsourcing agreement?1 point

Jim and Melanie both have young kids, so I'm guessing that's why... especially after watching the Rob Vaughn special. The "FMZ" does unofficially stand for Family Minded Zone. I think that's why Eve is no longer on the noon, either. Just a hunch!1 point

Basically live news and sports. CNN may have thrown the gauntlet first with putting a live feed of themselves on Max. (which is basically the same as linear CNN). This is likely because they've pushed themselves into irrelevance unlike the others. Until Fox News and MSNBC do the same, cable tv has a lifeline. ESPN may be helping to break the system once they go fully a-la-carte. But yes, the Paramount channels are mostly rerun vats. And basically added value for the clueless cable tv subscriber who wants their fix of shows readily available on streaming or on-demand.1 point
-
I agree that those channels have become useless rerun vats. Not to verge too off-topic, but what is the future of cable television? Non existance?1 point
-
It'd still be incredibly messy as content libraries span both Paramount and CBS. Good luck splitting those up (again) and finding out which company gets what. KKR would only take CBS if they could find a buyer, and even they would know better than that. Then again, they fucked up royally selling Storer Broadcasting to junk bond denizen George Gillett 35 years ago. Otherwise, Larry Ellison's trust fund kid is screwed.1 point
-
CBS is unsalable because no buyers exist. So Larry Ellison's trust fund kid is stuck with it for the long term.1 point
-
I suspect the company, regardless of what Skydance says, will be split. CBS and Paramount will go different directions.1 point

The set is set? However it is, tonight's presidential debate on CNN, the first in American history to not be sponsored by the Commission on Presidential Debates as well as the first to be held this early is underway and will take place in Atlanta, at Techwood. It will also be carried by other networks, though CNN has put in place strict rules for this simulcast such as for the commercial breaks. Also it's sort of a full circle moment, as for the debate, the network is broadcasting from the garden of Techwood, right outside the building Ted Turner originally built for the network. The set.1 point

HUGE NEWS TODAY. The two presumptive nominees for President have agreed to debate twice. The first will be on June 27th on CNN. This will be the first debate in American history to be before September as well as the first to not be held by the Commission of Presidential Debates, this will be a network EXCLUSIVE. https://www.cnn.com/2024/05/15/politics/joe-biden-debate/index.html1 point

Don't worry, Perry -- Rand Paul is coming to your rescue! Shouldn't they be referring to him as Senator Paul? I hope the bill crashes and burns. All it would do is help Nexstar, SInclair, and Gray gobble up more broadcasters, leaving smaller broadcasters such as Hearst and Graham (and smaller) unable to acquire stations because they keep getting outbid.1 point

Not only will he not get it, he'll stubbornly refuse to sell anything in order to buy it. This is the same clown who runs a company that proudly boasted on their own website they could buy ABC "with little friction". And no one has seemingly considered this is why the FCC has started to crack down on them.1 point

Good luck if you’re in Billings, Montana or Alpena, Michigan or Wheeling, West Virginia, or any small market that can’t support one 10pm news, let alone two or more. Or in any market that is not in a political swing state (Wyoming, Mississippi, etc.) and won’t get that easy money. The pending death of syndication and the presumed death of scripted primetime will inevitably result in the death of local news programming for television stations, many of which will simply become relay stations for large-market stations and/or O&Os. And those stations may be reduced to being nothing more than a turnkey diginet or rerun farm. If the audience no longer exists for syndication or scripted primetime programming, how in the wide wide world of sports is it going to remain for local news???1 point
