Sade would now be the senior anchor for the 11 pm newscast. She’s been on the 11 pm show since 2011.5 points

Yes, the studios/sound stages are on the second floor. They have a lot of open space to work with on 2, so it will be interesting to see what they come up with.2 points

I mentioned this downsizing last April. That said, there were plans ‘unofficially’ announced early last year that NBC was planning to create a massive combined newsroom (and possibly studios) upstairs for both WMAQ (NBC 5) and WSNS (T44). However, this was before they announced they were downsizing. But based on this new information (and if I'm understanding the listing correctly), it looks like they will be moving upstairs (likely the same floor as the NBC News Midwest bureau and master control). And if I remember correctly, that’s on the second floor. It’s been a while since I’ve visited the NBC Tower…2 points

The Weather Channel today is debuting Storm Center at 4pm(E). Their description of the show: Storm Center is a fresh new way to show you everything that’s happening in breaking weather throughout the world. Led by meteorologists Jacqui Jeras, Chris Warren, and Tevin Wooten, Storm Center will immerse you in shocking weather video and take a closer look at the science behind current weather events. They're moving Weather Underground up 4 hours to 12pm-4pm weekdays. It looks like we're losing Weather Center Live. So their new weekday line up is: AMHQ - 6am-12pm Weather Underground - 12pm-4pm Storm Center - 4pm-8pm Programming - 8pm-6am This is the first new show since Weather Underground began. I'm really curious how this new show will be.1 point

WEAU's Judy Clark is a local broadcast legend. Its true for someone who's celebrating 35 years at WEAU this year. Not only that, the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association (WBA) has noticed that too. https://www.weau.com/2025/03/13/judy-clark-be-honored-2024-local-broadcast-legend/1 point

I skimmed the thread too fast! There wasn't any discussion so I suppose it was still overlooked... That said I've updated the post. It sure does seem like that. I believe the big studios where Springer and them taped were also on the second floor? The third floor listing shows that part of the building as "Open to Below".1 point

Forgot to follow up on this! Marie has been going solo the last few months at 4 with the shot established across from the desk. (Similar to the shots in studio B)1 point

An update to the previous report that NBC was downsizing their space in NBC Tower... Not sure when it went up, but the landlord for NBC Tower has begun to advertise what seem to be the spaces WMAQ will be leaving. Curiously, is the Loopnet listing description for Suite 100. Additionally, space on the third floor and fifth floor is being advertised. A number of building permits were issued last summer/fall for the 2nd-4th floors as well. Universal has ceased advertising the production studios within the tower. I'm pretty certain it is, but Is someone more familiar with WMAQ's space able to explain if the space being advertised is the current newsroom?1 point

The last time they did a talent open was for the Giant Octopus designed graphics package (2012-2016) those were another set of amazing graphics for WABC at the time. When they switched to their preceding graphics package, they stopped doing the talent intros for the weekday 11 pm broadcasts, I guess they need more airtime to deliver more stories in the 35 min window. But I believe on the weekends they do the talent opens as those broadcasts are longer. Those graphics were quite stunning at the time. And honestly they could still work today. Obviously what they have now is better but at the time those were pretty nice!1 point

I wonder how this GOCOM ties into the GOCOM that eventually became Piedmont Television. Because in Youngstown in 2007, GOCOM sold WKBN to New Vision Television while WYTV was sold by Chelsey Television (post-Benedek instead of Gray) to Parkin Media. Seems more like a shell game to me...1 point

Brewers will have 10 games air on WITI (as well as several other stations in WI) this year1 point

WVTV is very likely going to be the lighthouse 3.0 station for Milwaukee by default (they stepped on a rake selling WCGV for the Sinclair/Tribune deal that failed and the only other station, WMLW, is sharing with low-power WBME-CD), so in technicality Sinclair is just waiting to make all the deals to get their subchannels on other stations and Rincon is de facto just holding a license and submitting FCC paperwork for the station's issues.1 point
-
WRSP (Fox, Springfield), WCCU (Fox, Urbana), and WBUI (CW, Decatur) are all owned by GOCOM Media with an JSA/SSA by Sinclair. Unless that gets tossed out, not much will happen.1 point
-
Sinclair gets to run a station without having to deal with the FCC. That's the new owner's problem. Not to mention getting some cold hard cash they may need... Plus, it frees up more opportunities to buy stations even though this new FCC could give them a free pass to go nuts.1 point

So they're finally selling some stations huh? Why couldn't they do this earlier? Regardless, this is something Scripps should be doing too considering their financial situation. EDIT: I wonder what will happen to the news on WRSP/WCCU if they won't sell those stations.1 point

“Replacing” or “in for” cause there’s a big difference. Who knows maybe we’ll see someone we least expect. Again, I thought they said Mike officially takes over on Tuesday, we may see him tomorrow morning, who knows if an official decision is even made but if it is I guess we’ll find out.1 point

End of an era. Grew up with Bill and Liz at 6 & 11 with Diana and Sade on After GH & Oprah. It's amazing just how long these anchors last and the rapport they build with the community. I too am surprised Mike is only doing the 11. Bill will be going out very prominently: anchoring at 5 and 6 as opposed to just 6 which is what a-lot of almost retired senior anchors do.1 point

I’m kinda sad about him leaving. I know he isn’t gone and probably won’t retire for awhile it sad to see change happen.1 point

This record-breaking storm is heading directly for Tallahassee, and could have far-reaching impacts in surrounding areas including even Atlanta. Tallahassee being the media market that it is, there's Gray's WCTV and Scripps' WTXL. And then there's Sinclair's WTWC. Last time (during Idalia) they piped in dedicated coverage from West Palm Beach. Their Fox channel still gets their news from WCTV. Not even a weather warning so far on the NBC side. Hopefully Sinclair is prepared, especially since they have to pipe in coverage and if there's any local effects to the stations this may actually be an advantage. I'll be curious to see if WMBB in Panama City and WFLA in Tampa actually offer live coverage online...since it's a hurricane and people need to evacuate out of their market areas...1 point

There's one really big reason to keep weather coverage local - because local weather is the reason most people watch local news. The Weather Channel is still an OK resource for a quick check of things - it could be even better if the local opt-outs were more than just Intellistar and an on-screen crawl during severe weather. I'm old enough to remember when they did not GAF and ran warnings full screen. I imagine NBC had eyes toward a hybrid model utilizing the O&Os when they purchased The Weather Channel. Certainly few could have prognosticated a global pandemic when it was sold (I don't say none because a few scientists have said we were overdue for a while) but pandemics aren't permanent - and what may make sense for a single year won't otherwise. So the question becomes, do the savings realized from centralizing weather outweigh any loss from the overall product of local news not having a local WX presence? For the FOX stations, it might - I don't know many O&Os currently that have an enormous investment in WX save for maybe Tampa. But for other stations and other owned groups who have firm stakes in weather - and the talent and tech to back it - that decision is much more difficult.1 point
-
I hope this gives the FOX O&Os something like the NBC O&Os it's own icons and it's own standard template and switching over to 1 unified weather system and the main font Neue Plak Especially KDFW KTTU KSAZ WTTG Definitely WOFL WJBK KRIV1 point
-
Please don't give me this nightmare. Efficiency. It's far easier to man severe weather coverage from the station. Plus, if the power goes down at meteorologist's home, well.... Locals will still know the region much better. I also feel they would better keep the audience attention too.1 point
-
I think the implications from such a service are far worse for those currently employed by FOX, and the future of local weather in these places.....as opposed to any "bias" that such a service may provide. They need to look back at Sinclair's "News Central" failure, which botched severe weather in many places when it was operating at the time.1 point
-
I do think you're onto something here. I think this could be one of those trends of the 2020s especially in this so called media consolidation frenzy. I think we'll see many more groups fall in line with Fox and streamline the weather and sports departments. I don't think Fox is going to be the only ones doing it, I think we'll start seeing other groups whether it'd be networks or local affiliate groups jump into the fray and do the same thing.1 point
-
I'll summarize my thoughts from the Discord: I don't think this is an attempt at a new OTA weather channel or anything close to WeatherPlus. I think this is a vehicle to enable the hubbing of weather. The press release says "Fox Weather will feature local, regional and national updates... [Drawing] on more than 75 meteorologists across 17 stations and Fox News Channel’s news gathering teams." and makes no mention of affiliate stations. This is a project that involves only the O&O group. Rebrand all the local weather departments under the "Fox Weather" banner (Which would be similar to WeatherPlus) and now you have a unified brand that anyone can appear in front of. Do you really need weekend meteorologists at both WITI and WFLD? Or can you just "regionalize" these markets and do both out of one station from time to time? Oh no! A Tornado warning has been issued on a Sunday morning, and nobody's at the station! Not to worry, the Mothership in NYC has somebody on duty, and they were going to cover the Tornado warning anyways, so they might as well just simulcast Fox Weather on the local FOX O&O. I would not be the least bit surprised if midway through next year, they announce they're "streamlining" the O&O's and are taking advantage of "operational efficiencies" presented with a network of meteorologists and suddenly some stations lose their weekend/fill in mets. I've said for some time now that Weather and Sports were ripe for hubbing, and I think this might be the start of that.1 point

Can't wait for the Trump Golf Course Forecast followed by a rundown of severe weather warning areas drawn on maps with magic marker. In all seriousness, I wonder if this might move Accuweather to make their channel (if it still exists) an over-the-top streaming service, or if The Weather Channel will offer a more weather-focused version of Local Now. Also, can't think Weathernation's very happy about it. I liked The Weather Network out of Canada's streaming offering they had a while back - it had TWC-esque local forecasts and everything - but it just up and disappeared one day from their app.1 point

Sharri Berg has been tapped to lead the new streaming weather service. Berg is current COO of News and Operations for FTS & also EVP of News Operating at FNC. The service is scheduled to launch with the debut of the "Fox Weather App" in 3Q 2021 and will also include a new website and streaming service featuring local/regional/national updates + live programs.1 point

Greenville, North Carolina ABC affiliate WCTI will launch a 5:30 p.m. newscast this Monday, which will be anchored by Brian North and Jaime McCutcheon. WSMV, the NBC affiliate in Nashville, Tennessee has announced that it will become the newest partner station in the WeatherBug network; WeatherBug is a national network of weather observation sites that provide real-time local weather information from area schools, public buildings and recreational sites. The most notable partner station in the WeatherBug network is WGN-TV Chicago, WeatherBug observations from the WGN broadcast viewing area as well as information from national WeatherBug sites during its newscasts (including the noon and 9 p.m. newscasts seen nationally on WGN America).1 point

News from Memphis, TN: WMC-TV will be starting a new 4pm newscast beginning August 22nd (replacing Oprah, which has since ended). Lindsey Brown (from WTOK in Meridian, MS) and Jarvis Greer will be anchoring, and John Bryant will be doing the weather. This is the first time that Greer, who is also the station's sports director, will actually be anchoring a news program, but it's likely that he'll still be doing sports highlights for the 6pm and 10pm news in addition to his new role at WMC-TV.1 point
