  1. This is really the year CBS is being starved; we're getting yet another Yellowstone spin-off too and they already cut 2/3rds of the FBI's to allow another one to start up. But this is on Paramount for instead of contracting with someone you know will stay in Hollywood for several seasons, hiring a comedian at the height of her career who makes much more in touring host the show. I can't blame her for walking away when it seems like the format and limitations of broadcast TV just never worked for a show that started on cable, a very hands-on management trying to file every edge of their network down to satisfy the FCC to get the Skydance merger closed, and a certain heiress that needs to have her nose in everything who just needs to be given FU money and told to go away already. I already sense that Taylor and the writing team was getting network-noted to death to not comment about current political events (which they sadly won't do for Colbert, who I've just stopped watching because it's NOTHING but that) and just had no further appetite for the show. As for the timeslot and local stations, it'll either be sitcoms, tabloid news shows, CBS's cheapo syndicated game shows, or infomercials. Nothing new or creative is going there.

  2. Let's level set here for a minute. First, NBCU must proceed with business as usual until the day SpinCo becomes a separate business. So, to that end, they proceed as normal in public while numerous plans and backup plans are crafted behind the scenes. For example, their NBA deal most likely included contingencies for how they would proceed if the USA network no longer existed. Remember, this is an 11-year contract, and cable has been contracting for a while, so it is highly unlikely this contract would have been signed without the ability to adjust programming platforms. It is probably happening sooner than anticipated, but cable will look much different 11 years from now, so both sides needed to carve out protection clauses in that contract. In addition, I don't think the NBA is hyper-focused on cable. It has been reported that the NBA was particularly attracted to the NBC broadcast network and its ability to create a "Basketball Night in America" franchise. The broadcast component was why, in the NBA's view, Turner could never truly match NBC's offer since Turner didn't have a broadcast network. The rights are with NBC Sports, not individual channels. And since NBC Sports stays with NBCU, the rights remain with NBCU. There is flexibility on the platforms airing content. Take the Olympics, for example. Ten years ago, NBCU put the Olympics on MSNBC to boost ratings for its struggling news channel. They aired the Olympics in the morning because Imus and their MorningLine programs were also-rans in the ratings department. Enter Morning Joe, and they decided it was more important not to interrupt regular MSNBC programming. So the Olympics moved to a different channel, and they didn't have to wait for a rights renewal to make that change. Having said that, NBC doesn't have carte blanche to do whatever it wants without input from the sports owner. The broadcaster has some latitude as long as any changes provide the sport with equal or greater exposure. For example, NBC couldn't take NBA games off the broadcast network and move them all to Bravo without consulting with the NBA. In that hypothetical case, the NBA probably has some veto authority. More information will be forthcoming regarding how this spin-off impacts NBC Sports. Perhaps SpinCo will sublicense content from NBC Sports, or perhaps NBC Sports will buy time on a SpinCo channel to air their content. Or maybe NBC decides to keep everything for themselves. Given how scripted content is going and the money they are spending on sports rights, they could put everything on the broadcast network and Peacock. Sports used to be exclusive to broadcast, so they might go back to the future regarding how they air sports.

  3. The corner angles of the set look nice. The whole thing however is not that impressive. It's the same old same old: massive video wall panels and a barren floor space

  4. KSWB would be another great fit for this package

  5. I don't think NBC can arbitrarily move sports programming around unless there's language in the respective deal(s) that allow for that option. Once the rights are up for renewal, then things could/will change. For now, everything regarding sports programming is expected to remain the same (including the Olympics) with SpinCo having to fill in certain gaps with their own people wherever necessary.

  6. Can GMA open the 100 year capsule buried in front of the studio a bit early? Even though we knew this was coming, it’s still kind of sad. GMA has been synonymous with Times Square from the days I started watching as a kid. They put up panels and obscured on-screen views of the windows years ago anyway.

  9. According to Deadline, CBS has abandoned the 12:30am slot. The news comes after “After Midnight” host Taylor Tomlinson decided to end her time hosting the program and move on to other comedic projects, resulting in the show's cancellation. That means NBC is the only network with two late-night programs. Not that ABC ever had a second late-night program, but this is notable in terms of the late-night landscape's direction. It's not dying yet, but it is bleeding a bit more.

  12. I'm looking forward to a time when the national anthem plays and broadcasts end for the day because it's too expensive to run anything anymore. Remember, RFK is implementing a rule which wouldn't allow big pharma to advertise. This is a what I primarily see as the advert stream for evening newscasts. So the era of network evening newscasts may just end.

  13. Not a big loss IMO. I wish CBS dropped 12:30pm too but they're still hanging to their soaps. It just shows that NBC is still king after 12:30am but also... not much people watch after that time anyways (except for maybe Nightline, EDIT: I think it will go back to 11:35pm when Jimmy Kimmel decides to hang it up).

  15. No big loss. It seemed like a placeholder program that was on the level of the Byron Allen repeats that filled the time before it right after The Late Late Show ended. I doubt that CBS News would try and rebroadcast their Evening News during that time, or that affiliates would use it to rebroadcast their 11/10pm shows. NBC getting the 1:37/12:27 slot for that seems ideal after Later ended.

  17. Congratulations to Kym on this move! A major win for WBTV and Charlotte and another major loss for WPMI and Mobile. Back in 2008, Lenise Ligon left WBTV and later ended up as the primary anchor at WALA Fox 10 in Mobile, a job she's held since.

  21. If I were a Comcast shareholder and the company decided to withhold all the valuables from SpinCo I would be furious with them. They would be, knowingly, sticking shareholders with a lemon. They need to give USA and its siblings a fighting chance for the company to have any value as anything more than a collection of withering assets waiting to be stripped for parts.

  22. Probably getting active this topic again...... Looks like WTTG/WUSA/WJLA possibly stopped using their chopper (N611TV/N991TV) and start using N98CL with WRC, at least that what I saw the chopper footage they used in CIA HQ barricade. Anyone can confirm that?

  25. Wow, Times Sq will no longer host any morning show with CBS Mornings also gone. Does GMA still use an indoor audience on the second floor? If so, I hope they continue that in the new building. Even Today hardly utilizes its plaza audience anymore.

  26. They can do what some other cable nets have done and license out the selected sports events. NBC also can switch many to Peacock. Years ago, before NBC owned Golf Network, the events were split between the two networks, so it it back to the past in some regards.

  28. Hehehehe, it ain't even breaking news!!!! Notice too the ticker has the station logo, wonder if affiliates can program the ticker to a point where the logo's insterted in instead of the ABC News bug or if this ticker is a varient that the local ABC affiliate is using.

  29. Friday and Saturday are the weakest TV nights of the week, so that does make sense to use the "B" team then as opposed to the standard M-F and weekend teams. Some ABC affiliates tended to do this in the past when they had strong shows back then...

  34. Apologies in advance if there is something obvious that I am missing here- But do the affiliates have more leeway on Sunday mornings with where they air network programs vs. local news? With a little channel surfing, Fox News Sunday had Shannon Bream interviewing Israel PM Netanyahu, now an hour later I'm on ABC This Week and Jon Karl introed his interview with the PM as the "first... in over three months". Could be true for a variety of reasons- if This Week airs at the same time as Fox News Sunday in some markets and is pre-empted an hour in mine? Or if ABC taped their interview before Fox? Is ABC assuming that if their viewers are channel surfing, they're not landing on Fox? Or... Am I way overthinking all of this?

  36. Interesting catch. Just this morning my local CBS affiliate skipped Face the Nation (for the first time that I've seen) and aired E/I programming instead. The did however air Sinclair's Sunday morning political show "Full Measure".

  37. There is considerably more leeway for some of the shows. Not a complete free-for-all, but the timing of some of the shows absolutely varies market to market, and that doesn't take into consideration how things are adapted for western time zones when sports coverage is factored in. But as to zeroing in on use of "the first...." - that may be overthinking it a smidge.

  38. Feel free to move this where ever. Given the rise of artificial intelligence, it's no secret everyone industry can possibly be effected, and now we are seeing how the news industry and journalism can be effected. Noting this, I feel it's time we have a form to discuss it's impact's, now and in the future. Channel 1 has been announced, a news network run entirely by A.I, with A.I anchors, reporters, and reports, vowing to be personalized towards the viewer. In addition, the other site claims that 1 has signed an agreement to launch on Tubi and other FAST services. Given the fact that this tech has become so advanced, there can be a whole news network with nothing but A.I anchors and reporters concerns me. If a whole network can do it, in a time when many organizations are looking to cut cost, why won't they eventually? This really has me thinking, especially as this is the industry that I aspire to working in a way some day. What do you think? https://www.channel1.ai/

  42. It makes me nervous. There's great potential for this technology to be abused for nefarious reasons. As it is now, there's a bit of an uncanny valley-ness to it that's unsettling. There are some things AI will probably never be able to really re-create, that being what it is to be Human with genuine Human expressions and emotions. Part of what makes real people appealing is the ability to connect with them on a personal level. Will AI be utilized in news? Undoubtedly, but it needs to be done extremely carefully.

  43. Having watched and visited, Today is on the plaza for a brief segment at the top of the 8am hour and maybe 1 segment at 8:30, in its four hour runtime. The only time they really heavily utilize the plaza is for concerts.
