Why hasn't the station try to create a local sports show on weekend afternoons regularly? For example, most sports programming from the network ends at 3pm local time. The station usually have infomercials right after sports programming. Instead of that, why not just air sports related programming locally between 3-4pm. Then have their regular programming afterwards. Or they should start their afternoon / evening news early then.2 points

Disappointed Tegna NBC affiliate WCNC Charlotte has cancelled their Sunday morning political program Flashpoint. It was an informative program with newsmakers and political leaders that aired after Meet the Press, as sort of a local version. Good program, sorry to see it go. Victim of cutbacks, I suppose. They are now airing infomercials in its place. WSOC still airs its Political Beat program on Sundays on the Cox ABC affiliate in Charlotte, and the Hearst NBC affiliate WYFF in Greenville-Spartanburg still has their Sunday news and public affairs program.2 points

The Seattle Storm now has an OTA TV home with KOMO and KUNS. KMSP will be airing select twins games this season… given how the twins session is starting, not sure if the station regrets the move yet. Edit: Gray will also be broadcasting the games region-wide. Remember Gray does not have a station themselves in the MSP market. https://www.fox9.com/sports/mn-twins-games-fox-9-2025?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR1eA2zlyEKDMBDYW2GTmqWDogIqF_2bR_nu6otq-TQZnuTtdpfVfK8LydQ_aem__CmSu6glaIU_kg-PeeyVPQ1 point

A lot of stations have installed in weather centers the abiility to interrupt for a cut-in and a mini switcher for meteorologists so they can control what makes air during a cut-in without a director or a crew. Because hub operators are running multiple stations at once, it is a lot easier for a station to call up and say "hey, we're at a risk of severe weather, activate the interrupt switch in the weather center at (call letters) so we can get on air immediately if we get a warning" and they will - so it isn't a game of telephone for the meteorologist to get on air quickly. After the cut-in, the call likely serves a couple purposes. On the technical side, they likely have to reset the switch if there's a chance of another cut-in, or deactivate it if the risk is over so a rogue elbow bump doesn't disrupt programming. Operationally, it is likely standard operating procedure to call so the hub operator can make sure the discrepancy report is accurate for the times of the cut-in and what ads were missed and need to either be made good or have billing adjsuted.1 point

26 years ago, my favorite GOAT broadcaster said goodbye to The Late Late Show. With After Midnight going away, I thought this would be appropriate to the ending of the first 12:30am show on CBS. https://youtu.be/od-xAkmSRw8?si=f-800Pk1nsnp2Xnl1 point

** it's hard to find data from 2024 or 2025, the latest I can find is from 2022. If this gives any idea of recent market standing... WSVN was at last check no longer market leader, and they're already in competition with WPLG. Based on the latest numbers from Nexttv (if we trust them) WPLG tops the English language stations in overall households in several time slots, with WSVN coming in second but competing for the demo. The Spanish language stations however appear to be averaging at #1 & 2 overall in the ratings in multiple slots. WFOR is in better standing than I thought they were, coming out as # 1 in english 11 PM. I have a family member that lives in So Flo who didn't even know there was a Channel 4 if that's any indication of their market standing. They separated WTVJ's numbers so it's difficult to ascertain their average standing. I would like to see something more recent, but 2022 is the latest I can find. https://www.nexttv.com/news/local-news-close-up-south-florida-holds-the-keys-to-successful-local-news (2022 Ratings)1 point

They’ve said they’re keeping Kelly and Mark, so that must be what will fill the 11a hour. From 1-3p, the story on the Local 10 website mentions today’s announcement is only the first phase of their expansion, so I wouldn’t be surprised if a lifestyle show is on the way. Other options for that time period include 48 Hours, which they already have airing currently in an overnight slot. InvestigateTV+ isn’t airing in Miami, so that’s a possibility too. They don’t carry Daytime Jeopardy, right? That could be a candidate for prime time. There’s also the new Deborah Norville game show if someone else in the market hasn’t snagged it. It would be hilarious though if they stole Family Feud and aired it for the full two hours between 7p and 9p like everyone here has been joking about.1 point

WSVN got competition alright. The only difference one station got an affiliation the other doesn’t. And when there breaking news WPLG can be first on the air whenever because they have free rein programming wise. Speaking of that I wonder if they take a cue of WJXT program schedule and use their syndies I know they still have Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune they’ll probably remain at their respective timeslots but I wonder what else they’ll acquire.1 point
-
Airing it in primetime wouldn't be unprecedented, they do that here in Phoenix (KTVK). It feels kinda awkward when it airs at the same time ABC airs a special episode for the network at the same time.1 point

WPLG's 9am is more lighter in nature than the 4:30-7am and other newscasts. I'm betting the new expanded morning newscast will be done by two separate anchor teams, like when they had the 7-9am WSFL newscast. If CBS/Sony allows KTVK to run both shows in primetime...1 point
-
I hope they use the 7 to 11 AM block to do a lighter morning show (like Good Day Orlando), instead of all hard news. It's surprising that in a place as active and vibrant as South Florida, there was no light morning newscast in the overlapping Miami or West Palm Beach markets, until WPEC added ARC Florida recently. WOFL 35 in Orlando is a great example of a station using creative formatting to fill heavy news output.1 point

So to break this all down, the new newscasts will be... Weekdays: - 7-9am (a return from when they did WSFL) - 10-11am - 6:30-7pm - 9-10pm (a return in the market since WFOR had to drop it for WBFS once they got The CW) The 10pm will be moved over from WSFL. Weekends: - 8-9am - 10:30-11am - 5:30-6pm - 6:30-7pm - 9-10pm (News + Sports) I'm surprised they're getting rid of the weekend 10pm. I mean, what will they do with that? Other than that, WSVN must be a bit nervous but ready to compete in what will be a WSVN vs. WPLG market.1 point

I've often wondered about that also. I figured that once World News Now disappeared from the O&Os, the ticks on the clock would ring louder...but the newswatch continues. It is a relic of a bygone era, a time when the Big Three embraced the emerging 24-hour news cycle after the Gulf War and during the '92 U.S. election cycle. But NBC ended Nightside in 1998. CBS's Up to the Minute lasted a little longer, making it into the 2010s before morphing into its current incarnation. My guess is that while WNN can't be making that much money for ABC News' bottom line, that show must be really cheap to produce.1 point

WPLG has announced their post-ABC news schedule: Weekdays: 4:30-11am noon-1pm 3-7pm 9-11:30pm Weekends: 5-11am 5-7pm 9-9:30pm 11-11:30pm There will also be half-hour sports shows Saturdays at 9:30pm and 11:30pm and a 9:30pm show on Sundays in addition to the existing 11:30pm Sports Sunday.1 point

No big loss. It seemed like a placeholder program that was on the level of the Byron Allen repeats that filled the time before it right after The Late Late Show ended. I doubt that CBS News would try and rebroadcast their Evening News during that time, or that affiliates would use it to rebroadcast their 11/10pm shows. NBC getting the 1:37/12:27 slot for that seems ideal after Later ended.1 point

France Jacques Legros is leaving TF1 after 27 years as one of the presenters (mainly a fill-in) of their midday news program, Le 13h (13 Hours; 1:00pm). His final edition is May 9th. Isabelle Ithurburu will replace him as the new fill-in while Marie-Sophie Lacarrau remains the main presenter on the main weekday edition. https://www.ozap.com/actu/13-heures-jacques-legros-quitte-tf1-isabelle-ithurburu-devient-la-nouvelle-joker-de-marie-sophie-lacarrau/6492571 point

Whenever Fox starts their streaming service (and since WITI is Fox-owned, they basically carry everything non-network outside the TMZ shows and Fox First Run filler on FoxLocal...and said filler is on Tubi anyways) and Disney decides to offer an ABC feed to Hulu subscribers without a Live TV add-on, it feels like we're marching towards that inevitability. And unless you're a Harvey-era Feud superfan who must watch all 12 episodes offered daily, why does the CW need stations in the first place outside of propping Perry's ego? I can get NBC through Peacock and CBS through Paramount+ and if Spectrum gets tired of paying Scripps more money for "YouTube playlist" news and advertorials, I'd be fine if those stations go away. TV stations really just need to get into a 50s radio mindset and begin to adjust to a world where scripted programming is in the past and the networks will only offer reality, news and sports content from hereon out. That seems to be WPLG's mindset now, where there's little upside when ABC seems to be spending less on affiliates and more on being a barker channel for Disney+ and Hulu.1 point

Honestly wasn't sure where to put this. CBS is now using the football scorebug on college basketball.1 point

Last year we had ESPN graphics on The CW, and this year it’s NBC. The network aired its first NASCAR Xfinity Series race this past weekend and this season’s races are entirely an NBC production before NASCAR and The CW take over producing the races and hiring talent for 2025 and beyond. (not sure if we want all CW stuff here or in a separate thread).1 point

What is the deal between cw and acc? Did NBC try to get a deal with this conference? I would assume they would attempt to because they're trying to build peacock as a destination for sports programming or at least put the games on USA network. Also, how did the cw get the bowl game? Did NBC make a bid on it to try to put it on peacock or usa?1 point

It’s important to note that the bottom-third ESPN graphic known as the ESPN BottomLine, which you’ll see a picture of here… actually mentioned The CW when a football (now basketball, found that out while watching College Gameday this morning) game was gonna be broadcast on the channel. So probably not what you’re thinking.1 point

Courtside Saturday on The CW has officially “tipped off” today with Notre Dame vs #8 Miami and #7 Duke vs Georgia Tech. No pictures yet, but I can tell it ain’t the ESPN College Basketball graphics they’re using.1 point

It's no secret Nexstar is likely running tight budget with The CW since they are trying to make the network profitable again. So it makes sense they wouldn't want to go over budget just to create a full graphics package for their College Football telecasts in a month and a half. They'll eventually do their own graphics package when they get to year 2 of the ACC telecasts. They just need more time to create a full graphics package. You can't rush perfection, unless you're willing to pay a lot for it.1 point
-
I don't think so. They used the Bally graphics when this package aired on Bally Sports last season. Plus, they are using their own full screen graphics and their own theme music. My guess is, given they announced this deal Mid-July, they probably didn't have enough time to put together a full graphics package since they only had a month and a half to make it happen. Using the ESPN inserts is probably just temporary for this year or maybe just a few months. Curious to see how this will work for ACC Basketball since ESPN have a different graphics look for College Hoops. I wonder if they will do the same thing there.1 point
-
My 2¢… i like the graphics and theme. It’s not Enforcer, but is unifying across Local, National, and Streaming. (Though the L3’s did give me a Tegna vibe the first time I watched a clip). The KPIX in the box by itself does look a little weird to me, but it serves 2 purposes: differentiates between local and national news (one gripe I have had with CTV in Canada, though it may be better now…), and reminds people that know, that it’s still the same station (at least here - no comment about the KCAL/KCBS situation) I will miss the station branding of “Channel 5/KPIX 5/CBS 5” (I do like numbers), but the 5 is just an abstraction of an identifier from an earlier time in TV (shouldn’t it now technically be KPIX 29…). If you use the 5, shouldn’t you also use 805 Comcast HD channel number, as well as the 3350 “Channel number” on Pluto TV? As long as the station is doing something to bring eyeballs to the news, then it keeps going. If eyes aren’t watching, we’ll end up with 18 hours of Jerry Springer repeats between ever-shrinking network programming blocks. Jim1 point

The bios are under the “contact us” tab. But yeah, really hard to find and poorly organized. The NBC O and Os were doing so great the last few years. Valerie Stabb and co investing heavily in facilities and investigative units etc. Its what led to their growing dominance and rebirth in many markets.. passing CBS O and Os and giving ABC O and Os a run for their money. Now they seem to be destroying that??? In Boston for example, they are down 2 investigative reporters and a main anchor. Any NBC insiders understand this think process?1 point
