  1. This is a fine set for Spokane and market 73. Folks, I think we need to collectively come to the terms with the fact that the money is gone, everything is more expensive, and design trends are different than they were 20 years ago.

  4. Late night yesterday, the US President signed an Executive Order for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to stop funding PBS and NPR. There have been statements from all three public media institutions who have expressed strong disagreements with the President's move, including NPR which threatened legal action. --- CPB: Patricia Harrison, President and CEO of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), issued the following statement today regarding the President’s Executive Order on public media: “CPB is not a federal executive agency subject to the President’s authority. Congress directly authorized and funded CPB to be a private nonprofit corporation wholly independent of the federal government. “In creating CPB, Congress expressly forbade ‘any department, agency, officer, or employee of the United States to exercise any direction, supervision, or control over educational television or radio broadcasting, or over [CPB] or any of its grantees or contractors…’ 47 U.S.C. § 398(c).” --- PBS: Statement from Paula Kerger, President and CEO, PBS: “The President’s blatantly unlawful Executive Order, issued in the middle of the night, threatens our ability to serve the American public with educational programming, as we have for the past 50-plus years. We are currently exploring all options to allow PBS to continue to serve our member stations and all Americans.” --- NPR:

  8. With how the kid's market has now declined to the lowest effort slurry like Poppy Playtime to 'educational programming' meant more for seniors, PBS is the firewall for good kid's programming. Like this and the BBC and CBC defunding drives, they want kids to suffer and be marketed to, and public broadcasters are seen as obstructing commercial interests and as liberal havens, even as the average PBS schedules and pledge drives actively market to a conservative nostalgic audience.

  14. When WXYZ switched to the 7 First Alert Weather branding in 2011 they started “7 First Alert Weather Days” not long after. They’ve been gone for years now. WDIV then rebranded their weather to “4 Warn Weather” and started doing “4 Warn Weather Days” which is executed in a ridiculous overhyped fashion. Apparently nobody got the memo there that it’s so last decade.

  22. IMO, 40 isn't that young and I don't think it should be a problem if networks are always seeking younger demos. I disagree with the anchor bench, CBS has the weakest. They haven't really groomed anyone that stands out for larger roles, with Nate Burleson and Gayle King being their most prominent personalities. In comparison, NBC has Guthrie, Jackson, Peter Alexander, Tom Llamas, Kate Snow, Kristin Welker, Jose Diaz-Balart, and Lara Jarett etc... I agree however with the poster who said Savannah lacks that evening news quality. Is 12 years on the national level that short of a time? In this day and age, people are advancing much quicker as the industry changes and turnover gets higher (at least at the local level).

  23. Snow would have been a solid choice, but it’s clear she wants to spend more time with her family. Guthrie is not at the level of say.. Diane Sawyer. She’s decent on Today, but is no where near good enough to be ‘the face’ of NBC News. And Jackson is too young (40) and when compared to ABC’s Johnson and Davis or CBS’ Duncan, they are all better than her, imo. I don’t think they wanted to take Alexander away from his current position. That said, it’s possible he gets a bigger role down the line (I.e.. succeeding Diaz-Balart on NN Saturday). The Liamas move buys NBC some time to build their anchor bench. When compared to ABC and CBS, they are pretty weak.

  24. TBN still runs non-commercial stations, and very, very few (we're talking about mainly small town stations where it's justified appropriately to support their ministries) religious stations and networks run any kind of advertising, even K-LOVE (who always converts their stations for the most part to non-coms upon acquisition); TBN is a craven outlier who has made it clear their priorities are not those of the founding Crouches (spreading the gospel in whatever ways they could), but just about becoming a race to the bottom regarding whose ministry gets the most money. And their ties to Merit Street, which is antithetical to every single part of the most basic of religions, show who they really are.

  26. The majority of TBN's TV stations are on commercial allocations.

  27. Also if they're going to investigate NPR/PBS over their underwriting load, how about TBN and multiple other religious for doing the same, but in an even more egregious manner as some of those channels are carrying obvious commercial advertising. They're not going to do it because they'll just grease the palms and open up more non-commercial licenses which will be specifically conditioned on things only the EMFs, Daystars and TBNs can provide to lock out true non-commercial and educational interests.

  28. Like literally, how can the FCC be considered fair if they do stuff like that to NPR and PBS?? Like couldn't anyone in Congress (Democrats, 'casue... GOP can't be trusted to help PBS) tell the FCC to knock it off and follow their guidelines that they have to be impartial? Yea, I do agree, given that... Lord, help them.

  33. There's one other game that most people have forgotten. Bob hosted "The Family Game" for Chuck Barris on ABC in 1967. A knockoff of "The Newlywed Game," its premise was to see how much parents knew about their kids and vice versa. During taping breaks at "Price," audience members would ask Bob about this show and he would invariably answer, "I forgot about that show a long time ago." If my memory hasn't failed me, Bob also created a show called "Lucky Pair," which aired locally in Los Angeles and was hosted by Richard Dawson (somebody in LA correct me on this). And there was a short-lived reality show, "The End of the Rainbow," which Bob co-hosted with "You Asked For It"''s Art Baker in 1958. Ralph Edwards produced this one, but it lasted only about six weeks before being replaced by that old standby, "Ted Mack's Amateur Hour."

  34. I'm anticipating a memorial tribute TOTH ID on Monday (possibly for the week, possible at various points during the day), something filmed to air at the top of the season premiere, and possibly a primetime special, sometime soon. As for a renaming of something, I could see them going the stage route, but unfortunately, it's not that different from the studio dedication, and simply shifting it to the new facility (in whatever form) feels like it cheapens the honor. For better or worse, Bob had zero connection to the new place. I agree that they should do SOMETHING, but I'm just not sure what.

  35. Wondering how TPIR will commemorate this... They've moved from "The Bob Barker Studio", does the new studio get dubbed the same? Do they go the "Bob Barker Stage" route like Jeopardy did? I feel like Fremantle/CBS can't not do something here...

  36. Whenever I was sick at home during my elementary and middle school years, The Price is Right was one of my favorite shows to watch. With his natural charisma, sharp wit, electric personality and almost-instant icon status, he was one of the reasons (if not the main reason) I watched and why the show was (and still is) an enduring hit of American television and touchstone of American popular culture. He (like Betty White) at 99 lived a long, beautiful life that will forever live on through his incredible career, the show and both of their enduring legacies. Condolences to his family. May he rest in peace.

  39. A legend for sure. Spent many mornings during the summer, before college classes, even during work watching TPIR during the Barker era (He was still hosting during one of my old TV jobs). This brings back the memory of 10TV's premiere of NightBeat. More infamously known for the surprise appearance of wanted fugitive Donna Osborne who later turned herself into authorities after appearing on the show, Rod Roddy's passing was the same night and can be seen in the headlines pre-open. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyS9ouDaO0o

  46. They almost assuredly will not in a form we would consider comparable to how they exist today. If the past 100 or so hours haven’t made it clear, whether Congress authorizes funds or not is no longer material. One person and his band of accomplices are rapidly taking over every disbursement, not to mention previously private personal data. Entire agencies are being dismantled; with control of payment systems, no checks (figuratively) will go to those organizations. Congress is not stepping in to any of this, as we’ve seen. Perhaps someone will mount a court challenge; great. By the time it meanders to the SCOTUS, of which we know the makeup, it’s a moot point. This is not the world of checks and balances. There are no guardrails. There is nothing that is going to stop it.
