Nice bowing down to the Convict-in-chief, ABC. This just put the rest of the news division and the O&Os on notice about criticizing this petulant man-child and the cult members in his administration.6 points

For anyone who remembers or is still interested in the work of TVbD (Television by Design), I can probably answer most questions. I was one of the original members that started the company after leaving WTBS. I've only just noticed your incoming links to the TVbD Vimeo page, so apologies for the late response. I'm recently retired and have been exploring the idea of producing a feature length documentary about the work of TVbD in particular, and/or the history of motion graphic design in general. I'd be curious to know what this community thinks of the idea, and if there might be potential collaborators here. Thanks for the mentions and the memories.3 points

Looks like ABC is taking notes from 20th's former cousin in the news space. Please don't attack me. I had to say it.2 points

I think, unlike George, Lester actually wants to reduce his workload. As for contributing, NBC has a precedent with that- Brokaw sat in on election night for many years after Nightly. Often times, we see an anchor emerita so a special interview- Diane Sawyer still does a limited number for ABC on occasion. No matter what, expect Lester's role to be reduced, and get smaller over time as he get s closer to full retirement.2 points

It's not a bad thing on a normal day-to-day basis, no. It only becomes a problem when the station group still expects stations to churn out sponsored sports shows and specials during football season, or for whatever soccer tournament is on Fox air these days.2 points

That is what it feels like to me, they are keeping the seat warm for now just in case CBS decides the current Evening News format isn't working. Shall we start a betting pool for when Maurice will be back at CBS 2?2 points
-
That still looks like the old animation to me so I'm still confused.2 points
-
Agreed, and it was announced in August 2024 that Maurice was moving to the Evening News. Meaning they’ve had 10 months or more to make a decision. Very odd.2 points

Definitely weird for them not to have picked a replacement as it's been about five months. Such a long gap makes it seem like they're hiring from outside, otherwise it should be easy to promote someone from within. I wonder if all the uncertainty around CBS/Paramount and the new CBS Evening News has them keeping a seat warm for Maurice just in case.2 points

Closest sister stations to there would be in Austin or San Antonio. Unless they have a studio or bureau in San Angelo?2 points

Local morning news is back in Mankato on KEYC. KTTC's morning news will remain on KMNF. https://www.keyc.com/2025/06/09/morning-news-weather-are-back-with-kato-mornings/?fbclid=IwY2xjawK0BNlleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHlsKA4yB_bdKgRKXZBPcIStYAORFbjVfP_AtTjNwJTe6enjc9U0s8uNmFVak_aem_5FiTVCpVT86As_ASkdqSYA2 points

This is precisely what the problem is. They took the lazy route and copied WNT's format, especially with the excessive use of breaking news for stories that are sometimes days old. Feeling the need to make changes is fine and necessary, but directly copying your competition is the easy way out, especially if you aren't taking their ideas and trying to improve upon them.2 points

I think Tom gets the job done. He's the NBC version of David Muir. Young(ish) guy in a suit and tie at the desk, roving anchorman sporting a black t shirt in the field. If not Tom then who's alternative with those all encompassing traits? Peter Alexander? IMO the issue is more so NBC Nightly News than Tom. I like Lester Holt but the program's quality declined after he took over. It's been rapid fire pacing, high story count, head spinning graphics in packages, and breaking news for the entire A block. All of this was likely a response to World News Tonight getting #1 (so I understand why they felt the need to change). Of the modern era anchors, Brian Williams' broadcast was superior. It was also fast paced but not to today's ADHD level. He also possessed a grand narrative writing style that was evident in his anchor intros which I appreciated. Regarding the speaking, I've noticed and been irritated by it too. NBC and ABC anchors seem to shout -- and as you say -- talk in half sentences. "Bullets flying, police coming to the scene, investigators finding victims". It's a mechanism to keep the story's "TRT" or runtime down to about 90 seconds long.2 points

You're not wrong; outside of political news ABC's enterprise and investigative journalism has gone down the tubes for true crime sleaziness and 'feel-good' stories which end up not being that (people having to pay lunch debt for instance, a thing that should not exist). A news organization shouldn't be doing trial re-enactments with paid actors like they're doing now with the Sean Combs trial; that's stuff for People and Court TV to do.1 point

I doubt Kelly will be leaving the show. Not saying she won't, I just highly doubt it. At the end of February, she had to suddenly leave between tapings one day and missed the next day. Came back for a day, then the show was dark for a week. She then missed the following 10 episodes when they came back. From what I've heard, there was a sudden health issue that came up in her semi-immediate circle that she had to take some time to help deal with. Since she nor any of the higher ups at the show have said anything publicly about the absence, the NY Post and Daily Mail have ran with this weird narrative that she's leaving that keeps snowballing. Then you have all the leach websites that keep regurgitating the stories as fact. She's missed time in previous seasons and there wasn't a big deal made about it then, not sure what's different this time?1 point

I doubt it, look at the wall on the set. It wouldn’t make sense to reprint the graphics again and change out the wall. It kinda looks the the X in FOX. Kind of similar when KTXL had a X on the wall on their previous set.1 point

Tom Llamas is doing a decent job so far, but I find myself still missing Lester Holt. Which begs the question, I wonder if they will still have Lester participate in special breaking news events or election coverage? Not as the principle anchor in which Tom will now assume that role, but as an elder statesman offering his perspective? Or would that create conflict similar to David Muir and George Stephanopoulos where lines had to be drawn? Or perhaps allow Lester to do special interviews or contributing reports? If they allow Savannah Guthrie to participate in special events coverage, certainly they could still make room for Lester. I would like to see that, in addition to his role on Dateline.1 point

I was not aware of that. But why would they decide to remove CBS/NBC logos but not FOX? And do they have any ABC affiliates? I personally prefer network logos as an identifiable aspect of the station. Especially heritage stations such as WBTV in Charlotte which has been a long term legacy CBS affiliate since day one dating back to 1949. And I especially dislike WJZY in Charlotte becoming Queen City News and a very understated FOX Charlotte, rather than the former FOX 46. Although that is a Nexstar decision rather than Gray in that scenario.1 point

What is Disney planning on doing with Times Square? Was it a lease or do they own the building? Watching the flashback video on GMA this morning was interesting, the place was such a unique design and fun layout but it looks like they just gave up after the pandemic. The set is so dark and depressing. Hoping for a bright refresh next week.1 point

Interesting shot -- I kinda liked KSWB's previous set... I'm hoping to God they get new graphics with the new set -- kinda hoping for the Nexstar Fox package that WXIN and WDAF received1 point

say no more….I see where you’re going there with KMSP, it’s more white, grey and chrome. From its Brick lofty studio look, the new KSWB set is slowly making its debut. Right now the Promo for their July 4th Big Bay just dropped from the new studio. Seen in the photo attached you can see a circular anchor desk. Instead of a real surfboard that they currently have in their studio, they have 3 stenciled out surfboards covering a tv monitor.1 point

I definitely think if the intention was to promote someone to the 5pm permanently, it would have been done already, as mentioned, there's no point in delaying that. I think with Paramount trying to cut costs, keeping only 1 permanent anchor on the shows (Kristine) might be a way to save money (?), at the expense of viewers having to see a different anchor next to her at 5pm depending on the day. Kristine seems to be permanent at 6pm/11pm, and it was mentioned they are moving towards solo anchors. Originally she used to, but I don't think Kristine does the 8pm anymore (it seems to be Allen Devlin or Dick Brennan most nights). I think the theory of keeping the seat open for Maurice is interesting and I could see a situation where the Evening News removes 1 of its co-anchors, also to cut costs. On the weather front, Lonnie has now re-added the 6pm to his schedule, so he seems to do everything again weekdays, except for the 8pm; which has been Vanessa or Craig Allen. I do wonder how they will add Scott Padget into the mix.1 point

NECN isn't even on Spectrum here in my part of CT, so I haven't been able to watch it since we moved from NH over a year ago. I imagine Comcast not wanting to run newscasts from stations they don't own (Tegna's WCSH/WLBZ, Sinclair's WJAR, Nexstar's WWLHearst's WPTZ), but you'd think they'd at least run newscasts from their other New England-based station -- WVIT here in CT. To say nothing of, oh.... Telemundo Boston. Makes you wonder what would've happened if Hearst owned stations in more than just 4 of the 9 DMAs... I think streaming (via apps or the FAST services) is the closest they'll likely get anytime soon, especially since NBC Nonstop didn't work out in the long run.1 point

KTXS has gone anchorless so they can function just fine without a studio. Just stick the weather guy at another nearby Sinclair station like Amarillo. Now, the STL getting knocked down will be a little more complex to overcome. They should be able to pull off at least a cable-only feed with help from sister stations.1 point

Will they ever announce a replacement for Maurice? Schedule since he moved to network seems to be Jessica Monday thru Wednesday and then Allan/Dick/Alice on Thursday and Friday. I would hope something more permanent would go into place?1 point

So he was suspended... for being right? If calling a Trump official a hater (the most lenient yet still accurate term to call them) is grounds for suspension, then that is embarrassing and disappointing. Well... ABC showed their hand. And you know Trump is going to force it any way he can/will.1 point
-
Is this what is considered a fireable offense nowadays. No explicit pictures, no swear words, just a post critiquing Stephen Miller? ABC was the first to settle with Trump and now they're the first to fire employees for anti-Trump sentiments. I wouldn't be shocked if others followed suit.1 point

The source for the above is the Daily Mail and they have no idea what they (or the anonymous source) are talking about. There's a good reason nobody usually uses a Yahoo News syndication article that's from a pink slime SEO operation.1 point

Totally accepted the decision, no protest from me. It’s simply an interesting observation.1 point

I was surprised to hear Bill say that he'll be on Eyewitness News at 6 for years to come. Although it's customary for semi retired anchors to ride the 6pm until the end, in this cost-cutting climate I'm surprised they didn't make him fully retire instead of paying him to anchor for 30 minutes a day. Regardless it's cool to still have another veteran anchor around for a while longer. I grew up watching Bill and Liz together at six, so it's nice that she will be his final partner.1 point
-
Yeah, it’s the end of an era indeed. This is exactly how it played out for Bill Beutel in the late 90s until he left the station in 2003. And most of the veteran anchors stayed on the 6 p.m. show till their final days. Bill Ritter, now his replacement from 2003, is now 75, so it’s understandable that he's slowly beginning his departure from the career. Hopefully, he stays till 2030! What a solid anchor and face he has been for WABC.1 point
-
The morning ones were finally edited too to take out Mike, but they also took out Sam. I wonder if this is a sign of him slowly moving back to the network full time. Another note about Bill’s second send off - he omitted Michelle’s name when listing all the current long tenured anchors.1 point

An unexpected lowpoint from what used to be a respectable network. What is the purpose of this video anyways?1 point

It’s something the ABC stations have done since they broadcasted online. I assume they’re fearful about rights but other chains have no issue.1 point

Top Story is really good. Was hoping he would hand it off to Ellison Barber so he could focus full time on Nightly.1 point

Wow that was harsh got home later but i saw the last 15 minutes so i can really put a finger on it. I have some other opinions but id keep it to myself. I’m just glad I’m no longer on camera anymore, ehh I hate it one thing it made me realize is I don’t wanna be famous. Maybe someday I’ll return, but I like my sales job I was making more anyways. Austin will be fine he really likes small markets he’s not a fan of big markets because he cares and wants to mentor journalists like myself he’s a good guy who just a the wrong end of a deal he was passionate he wouldn’t be able to see potential like he did in me in a big market because he wouldn’t have been able to hire me without no experience or Eric or Marcus. He generally doesn’t care about market size he loves what he does I wish they were more people like that in all industries.1 point

The streetside studio was an interesting concept when NBC brought it back in 1994. But, it's no longer 1994. It says a lot that everyone else has abandoned/is abandoning their streetside studio concept. It doesn't magically make the show better, or increase ratings. It has become a magnet for weirdos and people with an axe to grind, and that can be seen by how the area outside 1A's home base has been filled with a bunch of giant planter boxes over the last decade. The only way you can end up on TV now (and that seems to be a lot fewer people clamoring for that than before) is by being in the area that their security and/or the NYPD can shoo you away from the window. Look at the stark difference between this pic from a 1999 wild feed and nearly the same anchor position from this morning, and another similar one from this past week. You can't even see across the street anymore. Are they in New York City? Can't tell, it's entirely obscured by plants (and not even an actual plant in half of the second image, it's a screen showing a plant). The shots have all been adjusted too, go back and look at late 90's/early 2000's clips and match them up with the modern look... New York City is hidden from view. So, I ask, what is the point?1 point
-
Exactly. I really don't understand what the point was. It must be really annoying to work at CBS News with all the cost cutting and then see them spend money on stuff like moving "CBS Mornings" (what a dumb name) to Time Square with a set that looks like it could be a green screen. Honestly, all the networks have gotten really lazy with set design. The new trend seems to be make a fake digital set and then display it on a huge screen as a background.1 point

Am I serious about what? I was unaware that Tamron Hall relocated to the new studio. Everybody doesn’t know everything, and thank you for informing me. There’s a more polite way that you could have informed me of that, instead of your usual sarcasm. Again, If you’re going to respond to anything I post check your tone first. I always reply to people respectfully on this thread, give me the same courtesy. You aside, the new studios are terrific so far. The lighting on The View also looks very good. Hoping the upcoming WABC set is just as great.1 point

Well, looks like TVBD did the others I was looking for including WTHR, WOIO/WUAB, and WSBT. Was the original WOIO "nineteen" package a work of TVBD or just John Christopher Burns? And at what point did he leave TVBD?1 point

TVBD - Tv By Design did the motion graphics for WXIA at that time to my knowledge.1 point
