  1. Who knows... Maybe our FCC will actually show a backbone like Ajit Pai did by forcing the Sinclair-Tribune merger into an administrative law judge review. Whoever saw that coming? If there's any hope, maybe Chris Ruddy will convince Brendan Carr that all this consolidation is bad and sentence all of this forthcoming consolidation to the same fate... We can only hope...

  2. So much for Nexstar/Perry Sook wanting to be in every market. It hasn't bitten them yet. I mean, we've only had the announcement that Sun Broadcasting is buying WFTX. Whereas reasonable people such as yourself are upset that Hearst hasn't put up the white flag of surrender, sold all their stations to Nexstar/Sinclair/Gray/Tegna or private equity, rolled over, and joined the choir invisible. There's a simple reason so many of us love Hearst: As broadcasting companies throw in the towel and sell their stations to competitors or private equity, all indications are that Hearst is one of the very few really companies left. Could they someday disappoint us or even break our hearts by selling out to another company? Of course. But until it does, we'll keep cheering them on.

  3. So thankful I have Apple News (Gannett really needs to make one subscription universal across all papers digitally);

  6. IIRC, KYW came out of SNL and basically the top of the hour was akin to "Oh yeah. We're now CBS." Of course they did more at other times, when people other than those who hung out until the end of SNL were watching, but it was an amusing contrast to the amusingly over-the-top 1 am infomercial/"newscast" over at NBC 10. Respect to both orgs, they made what they were given work to the best of their abilities.

  10. Both stations have posted compilations and looks back at the switch before that are available on their YouTube channels; you have to search and scan through a bit, but they did do some during the 25 year mark in 2020.

  11. I have and there is no scale disadvantage for Hearst and no the McBride's cannot bully Hearst out of the market, if anything it's more likely we both bully each other out of the forum before the McBride's bully Hearst out of Fort Myers. Hearst wasn't dumb when they purchased WBBH and the LMA for WZVN they knew what they we're doing I've already said that they knew what they we're doing I don't know how many times, in fact we'd be having the same debate over this had Nexstar and Gray bought WBBH/WZVN. The Waterman's knew that Edith had a goal of getting out of the broadcasting business before her 100th birthday, she did exactly that, there really was no stupidity on either side.

  12. It's really important to remember that Hearst paid $220M for WBBH and only WBBH. WZVN remains owned by Montclair, and while that LMA likely added to the value of the station, they still do not own it.

  14. It is being sold to WINK. There is literally no difference between the two companies except for the chief executive. And that news department is gonna be vaporized. They desire to live in a permanent right-wing hellscape run by morons and at continuous risk of being destroyed by hurricanes, and may be uninsurable in the not-too-distant future. Not that Youngstown is any better. You don't spend $220M to wind up in a severe scale disadvantage. It's absolute lunacy to assume Hearst is content with now being in a totally uncompetitive position.

  18. TV station management is disgusting. If stations are getting rid of long-term anchors and paying talent less because they "no longer move the needle", why do stations care if ex talent goes to other local media? It can't be protection of intellectual property because digital writers and photojournalists typically aren't under contract. It's control and jealousy.

  19. akshuli, the sidebar spam on Allen's gfx demos (and WABC) is ATSC3 "enhanced" interactive content. There's a burger menu icon up right. In the ABC demo the user is on a tablet, so mobile ATSC 3 with extra spam (you have to dig in the smart tv menus to nuke that, some are reporting the atsc3 interactive menus don't go away during broadcast)

  20. And you're wrong on assuming that things are going to be peachy keen for Hearst when any rudimentary knowledge of basic economics will tell you that the McBrides have a major advantage in the market and will dominate. But I'm not a bootlicker for Hearst, so...

  21. I can assure you that Nexstar would not have wasted $220M on WBBH and a lease for WZVN.

  22. Thank you!! Would we be saying the same thing if Nexstar had bought WBBH and in the process, moved a certain network to a WBBH subchannel? I know that doesn't mean much but them having three network affiliations would still stand.

  23. I don't see how Mission doesn't cleanly merge into Nexstar at this point. The pretense of needing a sidecar company would be gone altogether.

  27. After being MIA for weeks, Nate Rodgers is no longer with the station. His bio was removed earlier this week. His ‘dismissal’ likely centers around participating in a ‘Good Trouble’ political rally in July where he introduced Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, etc… which is a big no-no as a journalist.

  28. Congratulations, 10 years, that was a long run. Did you save your masters - there are some TV production archives that preserve this sort of thing, one in Northern California for example.

  32. No, it's looking like all broadcasts are branded as KCAL News, regardless of what station it's on:

  33. It looks nice. Better than the hot mess that was KCAL CBS News Los Angeles. I would bet the rest of the shows on KCAL will be CBS News LA on KCAL or KCAL News Los Angeles.

  36. If they're producing promos for a "new KCAL" with the existing KCAL9 lockup, doesn't seem like they're moving away from the KCAL9 brand anytime soon. Also who launches new stuff on a Thursday?

  38. I like it, it's plain but it's clean. Though, if you're going to brand your newscasts "CBS News Bay Area," wouldn't it be more logical to brand as "CBS Bay Area"? Just my 2 cents.

  39. My 2¢… i like the graphics and theme. It’s not Enforcer, but is unifying across Local, National, and Streaming. (Though the L3’s did give me a Tegna vibe the first time I watched a clip). The KPIX in the box by itself does look a little weird to me, but it serves 2 purposes: differentiates between local and national news (one gripe I have had with CTV in Canada, though it may be better now…), and reminds people that know, that it’s still the same station (at least here - no comment about the KCAL/KCBS situation) I will miss the station branding of “Channel 5/KPIX 5/CBS 5” (I do like numbers), but the 5 is just an abstraction of an identifier from an earlier time in TV (shouldn’t it now technically be KPIX 29…). If you use the 5, shouldn’t you also use 805 Comcast HD channel number, as well as the 3350 “Channel number” on Pluto TV? As long as the station is doing something to bring eyeballs to the news, then it keeps going. If eyes aren’t watching, we’ll end up with 18 hours of Jerry Springer repeats between ever-shrinking network programming blocks. Jim

  40. Thank for saying this in a much more polite, eloquent way than I wanted to. The "NEW GOOD, OLD BAD" attitude of said poster in this and another thread has rubbed me the wrong way, for some reason, but painting this community with such a belittlingly broad brush struck a nerve.

  43. Just adding in that it's a really nice rebrand. The overall downturn in local TV news has hit KPIX especially hard over the last few years, and the product has really fallen into the cellar of the Bay Area market. Yeah we'll miss the old Group W-style 5 (however it was starting to look really old), but I can't tell you the last time I used the channel number buttons on my remote now that almost all of my linear TV viewing is via streaming services. All in all a nice step up for PIX.

  44. If I went to a focus group and played them the Enforcer theme, I bet only one person at most would recognize that as "the theme for my local newscast" or know that it (in most of the country) has anything to do with CBS. I said in Discord on March 8, 2021, "honestly? I bet Average Joe Viewer couldn't make the connection between Enforcer, CBS Local and...CBS." I later called it "some ditty that most people don't even realize is associated with CBS local news for reasons far from them in time and space". And I stand by those words. Shelly Palmer and later Frank Gari sold that theme mostly to CBS affiliates because of the use of the theme at the CBS O&Os. (Of course, non-CBS affiliates have used the mnemonic—including WVIT and KRIV, O&Os of other networks—and even in some cases had their own versions made, like WHTM's Sheldon Elias-done remix.) The whole point of a brand mnemonic is to provide that familiarity across platforms and expressions. It's really fitting for the News and Stations structure of CBS. This is the same network where the background of the CBS Evening News lists bureaus in Rome, Johannesburg, London...Sacramento and Baltimore. By doing this overhaul in the way they have, CBS has Built on one of its few strengths in the area of local news, the streaming channels. Recognized (at least here with San Francisco) that the newscasts have been titled to be replayable in a loop on CBS News. Executed a brand hierarchy that is forward-thinking and geared to the content-flowing-like-water mantra of Adrienne Roark etc. At the same time, the call letters are being used to reassure viewers in certain markets with especially entrenched or viewed CBS local news brands that this is the same newscast they're used to watching. Brought the local stations news in line with the network news and the network as a whole. If the goal is to improve the reputation of the local product based on CBS News, this will help. Provided a much-needed visual rejuvenation to the local news product. Created an up-to-date look that should help the stations to at least some extent in ratings combined with other improvements to the news product. Broken with the look and feel that stagnated around the CBS stations chain in the Dunn–Friend era.
