  1. Humor me. What part of this is the new graphics, other than the fact that they're using the correct, current ABC?

  2. KABC has a preview of their new graphics with this add. Off topic: I haven't heard of a newscast being on the radio in years.

  3. Which is so odd because I think he's great, always enjoy his forecasts and he really explains stuff well. Maybe he does do stuff behind the scenes? He was this amount of "part time" even before he had a daughter. i remember a few years they even left him out of the Flower Shower special! This new position just seems really odd. Doesn't seem to be any logical place to add a new face.

  4. I wouldn’t bet on it. The live broadcast of the Indy 500 has been blacked out in Indianapolis for decades.

  6. So 6ABC is getting a new meteorologist next week. I wonder if they will switch over to the new graphics when she starts because the news intros would have to be updated to include her.

  7. Wouldn't shock me if it ends up airing at that time on WPXI. You are right that Judy did well in the timeslot before the evening news. But regardless of what time it airs, there will be schedule changes at PXI come September.

  8. I bet WPXI will try to air it at 3pm. JJ used to always win its timeslot against 2 and 4. Even beating Oprah, of course the Pittsburgh market is older and quirky. GMA consistently beats Today and Guiding Light got consistently strong ratings until the end.

  9. Agreed. A majority of people going to Times Square are NOT going to see the Good Morning America studio and a majority don’t even realize that’s where Good Morning America is. WABC is also not an attraction in Lincoln Square. Lincoln Center is the main attraction. The street side WABC studio is kind of cool walk by for some, most others don’t even care or know that it exists there. I’m sure the local residents and business owners will miss seeing the staff from ABC and WABC each day, but that’s about it.

  11. This tickles me a little bit. - Is it Nexstar? Is it McKinnon!?

  12. Nexstar has a real challenge on its hands with KUSI, and it's not just an integration and construction challenge. KUSI was the most unabashedly conservative TV newsroom in a major market anywhere. Embarrassingly so. And they will be dealing with angry viewers of that persuasion. But anyone external to the McKinnons and right-wing politics probably looks at KUSI and goes "yikes". Heck, I think even someone who came to KUSI from a Sinclair station would be shocked. There is a difference between a conservative lean, justifiable in San Diego, and just being a peddler of conservative disinformation. KUSI was frequently the latter. And Nexstar is only a "left-wing" operation if you're so far off to the right that NewsNation is radically left.

  13. FCC approvals does not mean the deal has been finalized or consummated. You should not be seeing any Nexstar insignias/signoffs yet.

  14. KSWB has a much larger and more modern plant overall and there's been stories out there about how KUSI's shared building (it has another tenant but it looks like the other part is vacant) needs severe maintenance. There's two miles and roads between each studio, so there's not much complication to merging them together.

  15. The only thing these dumb local newspaper 'best of the best' polls show is that there's both unchecked ballot stuffing from the few old people who care about this, and monetary contributions from advertisers that influence the 'winner'. Gannett is horrible with these things (I'm sure the only reason Patrick Soon kept it from the Platinum Equity days is because some local advertisers treat it like a drug high and toss money to keep their titles and plaster their front walls with these tacky trophies; it's free money to throw up some Survey Monkey polls, put in a bulk order of some plaques, and call it a day) and I can expect once Nexstar is in charge, their winning streak will end because the U-T is competition.

  16. A few thoughts came into my mind... would Nexstar go with the KCAL route and just rebrand everything KUSI News? Nexstar paid $35 million for it and I just don't see it going away, it's a brand that is well known in San Diego; getting KCAL'd would seem to be the most cost-efficient, there wouldn't be a need for separate branding packages and it would reduce redundancies. Both brands already use red, white and blue in their branding. Just use KSWB's good looking studio and graphics and KUSI's iconic theme music together. Merging of the two talents/staff from both stations: let's face it, this is going to happen, but if they mirror this to KTLA's situation in terms of cumulative hours on air: 15+ hours on weekdays, 8+ hours one weekends, then maybe there might be room for everybody? I also wonder if Nexstar will move any of KUSI's syndication offerings over to KSWB so it will mirror Fox O&O stations? KUSI always got many of the programs that would usually air on Fox O&Os: TMZ, Extra, Jennifer Hudson, and Sherry. Also, it's probably a good thing for Nexstar to have an additional hub for Newsnation in San Diego being that it's so close to the border. Nexstar is also getting into local sports, I can see them airing KTLA's Clippers games locally and possibly steal some of that local Padres tv rights from Bally.

  17. PIX, KTLA and WGN to a lesser extent have had free reign on their sets. Will KUSI get the traditional Nexstar set in a corner like big market brother KRON or will they get to do something original. I really like the chill vibe that Fox5SDs set has.

  18. FINALLY A NEW SET RIP One and Only. Hello Aerial

  19. I have to assume part of the reason for McKinnon getting out is because of KUSI's physical studio deterioration; with Nexstar in control they can vacate them and have a much more state-of-the-art building with KSWB. I also have to think these talks were happening even before LIV was a factor and Tegna is having second thoughts about the renewal with the decline of syndication being more of a yoke than a complement to 8.1.

  20. As @Samanthapointed out to me, this outright eliminates KSWB's main competitor, there are no newscasts on KUSI that don't overlap with KSWB. Because of that, the chances KUSI maintains any sort of separate operations is very, very small; in the case of Indianapolis, WTTV and WXIN have to have separate news ops because of the nature of their affiliations. Of note, KFMB-DT2's contract with the CW (reupped in 2021) runs through September 2026. So either Nexstar said what they said under the impression Tegna is planning to opt-out of their CW contracts, or they are forcing the issue for Tegna. Otherwise I cannot understand why Nexstar just turned KFMB-DT2 into a lame-duck CW affiliate for three years.

  21. Yeah, this would be a major change! When KUSI picked-up LIV Golf from Tegna's KFMB a couple months back, I knew something was up. This article suspects that KUSI will be a CW station when the affiliation becomes available: https://www.nexttv.com/news/nexstar-media-agrees-to-acquire-kusi-tv-san-diego-for-dollar35-million It will be interesting how news operations will merge. Both stations have completely different narratives; KUSI is more conservative-bent and has a news set from 1990s while KSWB's Fox 5 News has built up a cool, So San Diego vibe and has one of the best news sets in the area in my opinion. Will the stations adopt one news brand? Will there be simulcasts? So many questions.

  26. IMS does this so they can "so-call" boost attendance. They want seats to be filled at IMS for the big race. This "put the race on TV, no one will come to the stands" mantra is so backwards-thinking. Why you want to hinder the local viewers from watching the race live on TV? NFL use to do this (if there's no sell-out 72 hrs before the game).

  27. Yeah The CW is definitely not getting the 500. NBC will do everything it can to keep that race. It's not going anywhere. What could happen if The CW gets part of the IndyCar rights is something similar to how the rights were split between ABC/NBCSN (Versus before that) before NBC completely took over. That's a possibility. It really is a shame. It's ridiculous. Just plain stupid. There's no reason that the race should be blacked out in the home market. I've been against it for years.

  32. They easily could've put a black and white 2 in the box instead of the call letters... Either go by the call letters or the 2.. but both together in 2 difference places is tacky

  33. I’m not a fan of that “2” logo though. It looks a bit…off with the rest of the package. And unless they’re planning on rebranding as “KTVN,” I don’t really see the point of having the call letters in the box; seems rather redundant. I do prefer the music here though, mainly because Enforcer is a lot more versatile than Dimensional. Other than KPIX (which uses the package well), the O&Os use the same one or two cuts that get really tiresome after a while. Just my opinion though.
