WBBM, KPIX, WWJ, and my hometown CBS station WFOR will all give up their 9:00am news to carry the third hour of CBS Mornings, known as CBS Mornings Plus. KCBS is the other one carrying it but local news there in the morning is on KCAL instead.

Jim Donovan is now stepping down from his  longtime role as the radio voice from the Cleveland Browns as well.

Donovan's replacement on Browns radio is former NFL Network anchor/reporter, ex-DirecTV RedZone host, and recent Rams preseason TV voice Andrew Siciliano.  Siciliano filled-in for Donovan on three games last season.

More media happenings in Mobile....

WPMI and Sinclair have to cough up 200K in a lawsuit to a pastor that was erroneously identified as a predator.

This even after the station immediately retracted the story and offered ample airtime to the defamed pastor, who was actually part of the group that OPPOSED the group of pastors in trouble for sexual misconduct..

And Lagniappe reports that former WALA morning meteorologist Michael White is starting his own weather subscription service.

I'd post both stories here, but they're both paywalled by Lagniappe Mobile and why Lagniappe Mobile is enabling Michael White after all of the allegations against him.

There's something not being told here and Lagniappe is the last true source of journalism in Mobile after Sinclair, Nexstar, Advance (AL.com) and even Gray have cow-towed to the dark side of things while companies like Alabama Power create their own news sources "Alabama News Center" to distract the people with feel-good stories while they raise rates (and enjoy record profits) and pollute our state.

End rant.

In sort of a throwback to the latter half of the Johnny Carson era of the Tonight Show, Variety is reporting that Jimmy Fallon will now be producing new episodes of Tonight just four nights a week, instead of five.  Repeats/"Best of" shows will air on Friday nights going forward.

It could also be like when Letterman/Conan did 4 shows a week when they were on after the Tonight Show.

The ghost of KidsClick has bit Sinclair, their sidecars, and six of Nexstar's stations in the ass when they least expected it.

Fines have hit Sinclair, all of their sidecar stations, and Nexstar's KDVR Denver, KIAH Houston, KTLA Los Angeles, KTXL Sacramento, WGN-TV Chicago, and WGNO New Orleans for a program-length Hot Wheels commercial during the kids program Team Hot Wheels.

TL;DR - Sinclair has to pay up $2.65 million, Nexstar's six stations have to pay up $26,000 each, and Sinclair's sidecars have to pay up $20,000 each. All in all, its a combined $3.3 million fine.

David Heckard is back on Orlando television. He previously spent time at Spectrum News 13 before leaving to join WJXT Jacksonville. I'm unaware that he left that station as he's now joining Tom Terry's team of meteorologists at WFTV Orlando.

In Letterman's first five years on Late Night, he was off on Fridays, and Friday Night Videos aired in place after Carson.  The final six years on NBC, Letterman was on five nights a week, with Friday Night Videos airing right after; when Bob Costas, Greg Kinnear, and Cynthia Garrett all did the Later program (plus a four year period of guest hosts between Kinnear and Garrett), it aired Mondays through Thursdays, while the different incarnations of FNV occupied the remaining weeknight.

As far as I remember, Conan O'Brien was on NBC every weeknight, and didn't start doing four nights a week until he moved to TBS.

It's not so much a throwback as getting in line with what the other nightly shows are doing.

Beloved KGO ABC7 Mornings Anchor Kumasi Aaron announced that she is leaving and headed back home to Florida to be closer to family after losing her father which has been a challenge being away. Her last day is this Friday.

She will definitely be missed. The chemistry between her and Reggie Aqui can’t be replaced.

That's a surprise. She's been there for what seemed like forever but its been 18 years at WOOD and she spent 6 before that at WLNS.

Really nothing new.  Jack Paar didn't do a show on Friday nights; that time was filled with a "Best of Paar" rerun.  At one time Carson was on only three nights a week; Monday was a guest host and Tuesday a "Best of Carson."  He agreed to come back on Tuesday when NBC cut the "Tonight" show to an hour in 1980.

It is something of a grind to put a show like "Tonight" together, even more so when it was 90 or even 105 minutes.  Carson once explained that doing his nightclub act was like a vacation because he knew exactly what he was going to do.  But with a talk show, he said, you never knew if you might have to go out there and fight to "get it moving, get it cooking."  Carson also took a day off when he hosted "Who Do You Trust?" and for the same reason.  That show aired live Tuesday-Friday at 3:30 PM; Monday's show was taped on Friday night.  The show was a talk show disguised as a game show (much like "You Bet Your Life") and here, too, Carson never knew exactly how the show was going to go.

Steve Allen, the original "Tonight Show" host, cut back from five nights to three after he began his Sunday-night show that was on against Ed Sullivan.  NBC wanted him to concentrate on the Sunday show; Ernie Kovacs hosted two nights a week to probably the biggest audiences he ever had.  Ironically, his announcer was Bill Wendell, who announced Letterman's show until his death.  Allen gave up the "Tonight Show" altogether in January 1957 and was replaced by what was essentially a nighttime version of the "Today Show" called "Tonight!  America After Dark" with host Jack Lescoulie.  That show bombed, opening the door for Paar.

Sounds like what KABC and KGO do with World News Tonight.  They carry the Eastern feed at 3:30 (PT) then the Pacific feed at 6:30.  And I believe KNBC does the same thing with NBC Nightly News.

Y'all. That's it for Cindy Preszler. The trailblazing meteorologist has made Miami her last stop on her career.

She is retiring after a legendary 42-year career that includes stops at TWC (the first woman to track a landfalling hurricane in TWC's history), KSDK (her longest stop of her career), WFTX, and in my home market at WFOR.

This line stuck out to me in this story regarding Jessica Kartalija's departure from KYW (yes, it was a cost-cutting measure to release her)...

  • Apparently, the plan across all CBS-owned and operated stations is to go to single-anchor newscasts in the evenings, so in Philadelphia, it will be Ukee Washington solo at 6 p.m. and 11 p.m.

So if this part is true and it goes forward like this, who will solo anchor across CBS' O&Os amongst their markets and on KYW's other news (4, 5, and 8pm on WPSG)?

For the record, Amanda Hall still anchors at 4:00, 4:30, and 7:00 with Lois Thome at 5:00, 5:30, and 6:00 (I don't know who anchors their 3:00 and 3:30 ever since Nicole Gabe left for WFXT).

However, WINK is adding another female anchor to their weekday roster in Emma Heaton who'll anchor their 7:30, 10:00 (both on WXCW) and 11:00 p.m.

I know KPIX (San Francisco) is already doing this with Julliete Goodrich & Sara Donchey (although she's currently on leave for personal reasons). I'd think for L.A. (KCBS), Pat Harvey & in NYC (WCBS) Kristine Johnson (If it weren't for him getting the CBSEN gig, Maurice Dubois would be the solo anchor).

I was seriously thinking about this and I think KPIX's weekday newscasts are already solo from noon onwards except their 5:00 and 5:30pm.

IIRC, Ryan Yamamoto is already solo at Noon, Elizabeth Cook at 3:00, Juliette Goodrich at 6:00 and 7:00, Devin Fehely at 8:00 and 9:00 (KPYX), and Sara Donchey at 11:00. Ryan and Elizabeth are together for the only co-anchored evening newscast at 5:00 and 5:30.
