After 25+ years, the new KUSI set is in service

I like the use of the header above to add some depth and the look fits KUSI. Camera blocking is still pretty bare bones - just straight on shots with the skyline in the background for the close ups, so you don't see much of the variety of the sides of the set on air unless they're doing a 4 shot.

KSWB will move into the KUSI building when its studio is finished. No change to the graphics or music...would have thought that would happen along the new set. So maybe they'll keep the pre Nexstar look going that's comfortable to so many viewers.

Recent promos have been doubling down on the star /red white and blue, classic KUSI look with a 'Putting You First' slogan, so that leans toward no big changes in the look. A few months ago they changed the typeface on the lower thirds and added a ticker, but that was the extent of it.

Viewer feedback in the Facebook post is spicy, less about the set, more about shifts in the story selection and guests after Nexstar acquired. I think they're still #1 in the 10/11pm slot.

Definitely an improvement over what they previously had. The KUSI logo however still looks cheap, like a fake social media page logo.

At bare minimum, it looks like it belongs to a small-market Texas station, not Southern CA

I mean, KUSI-TV's former owners owned stations in Beaumont and Corpus Christi, Texas (KBMT and KIII respectively)

And it looks like it debuted in 2010..... Can't wait to see when the next one in 2056, sources that's when the new graphics will debut!

  • 4 months later...

This is kind of off topic, but I tuned in to KUSI recently to just see how the set looks in action, and they barely even show the set. They are still using a very tight 2 shot at the anchor desk, so you never see the desk. There are no pans, no stand ups; and then the only other shot I saw being used was of the interview set. Not sure if it has anything to do with construction of KSWB's set, but I just found it really odd. But aside from that, their product is awful. I was watching the morning news and they need new anchors immediately. Paul Rudy is not anchor material at all. Not sure if Lauren would be better with someone else, but at the very least, Paul needs to be relegated back to just sports. They really need help on the KUSI side.

If you are on instagram, you can search KUSI-TV under places and look under the Recent tab. There’s so many pictures and videos of the studio and newsroom.

The set up pretty much looks like how NBC Bay Area and Telemundo is with studios next to each other with a massive newsroom.

It’s kind of hard to see the KSWB side of the KUSI newsroom since the studio is dark so you can’t tell if their studio is even done or not. Do we even know when their move in date is since they’re still at the other building?! It would be nice if they kept their 360 desk. It’s so unique how BDI designed it.

At least yay it’s an upgrade for KUSI but like you said, they never mentioned its debut or gave us a tour of the new set at least. I feel like the set is still underwhelming with them having a newscast with segments that could’ve utilized more studio space besides a desk, an interview area and green screen.

Not sure about the tight shots. It’s pretty much up to the director in the control room to call the shots. Remember, KUSI is more of an older audience, they don’t care about studio shots and jib cameras panning in the studio. Unlike FOX5, they are all about that stuff.

its also still surprising while looking at the videos on instagram that the newsroom is still dark. I mean all the computers and TV Monitors are not functioning and it’s almost 6 months in after the remodel.

KUSI says GMSD is the “most watched” local news. Probably some cume over the long broadcast.

They found a sizable loyal niche for that product and anchor team.

On the evening they show 4 shots with the desk showing. 10pm they tend to lead the ratings.
