  1. That and their iconic FOX 8 with the Fleur de LIs O

  2. The Fleur de Lis is probably the most sacred of all above being referred to "Fox 8". It was a brilliant move by the Bensons when they bought the station, and carried on to this day. And after reading the comments, potentially losing the "Fox" branding is causing some viewers to lose their minds, because they tie it with a certain "news" channel.

  3. The comment section on @TheRolyPoly's FB link has some people calling out the dropping of FOX for the call letters already... And most are not kind. Hopefully someone is reading the early speculative feedback! Agree that when you're on top of the mountain, you need to indeed innovate and stay ahead of the game, but don't blow up what you're known for (read- the branding, the logo) Isn't a Fleur-De-Lis in NOLA like hiving a lone star on just about anything in Texas? Lots of local and regional pride that goes along with it.

  4. Please don't tell me they're rebranding as WVUE 8..... Come on Gray.... "FOX 8" is what put them on top of the ratings, WVUE is branding of an also-ran ABC affiliate that was pounded by WWL and WDSU 30 years before Fox came calling. These Fox stations don't quite have the ability to stand on their own like their other affiliated stations. Anything else would be foreign to their viewers.

  6. This, and if you look at the tour of the building they give in the newscast, the logos on the glass panels in the production/weather/newsroom areas alternate "WVUE8" and "Gray". The same segment, I noticed "WVUE8" and "FOX8" were used almost interchangeably. Are they in tandem? It is transitionary? Not enough evidence to speculate long-term from what I watched.

  8. RARE -- Today Show (Nov 2001) covering the aftermath of the American 587 crash. Post 9/11 colored lower thirds were in use. The patriotic tinted peacock bug was still used. NBC News American 587 crash coverage (2001). In similar fashion to 911, Matt and Katie are reporting on an American Airlines crash in New York City that occurred during the Today Show. One can only imagine how re-traumatizing that entire incident was, yet a lot of people my age had no idea this even happened.

  11. Let’s not exaggerate. Unless some were deleted, of the 41 comments on that post (as of this post’s writing), only four make reference to this, and two are from people confusing the Fox network and Fox News Channel. That said, I don’t know if they’re going the WBRC route with the branding (switching primarily to a callsign/channel brand, while keeping the network-centric branding in limited form) or dropping the Fox name entirely, since the post still makes reference to “Fox 8”, including on the standalone and desk monitors in the set pic (assuming that wasn’t taken from weeks ago, and updated graphics with the “WVUE 8” brand weren’t sent to the new control room yet).

  12. Over recent weeks, I have already seen David Ono and Jovana Lara co-anchoring the 4pm and 6pm newscasts as well as Marc Brown and Michelle Fisher co-anchoring the 5pm newscasts. Brown has still been solo anchoring the 11pm newscast. Once Ellen Leyva retires, I presume that will be the official weekday afternoon/evening lineup going forward.

  13. As of this week, Lonnie is back for the 5pm and Evening news, but it seems Vanessa is covering the 6pm/11pm. It could be to ease back into work, and we'll see if Lonnie returns to the 11pm at any point, but I could see this change being permanent. Craig Allen it seems will fill in Vanessa's weekend slots (also glad he has a somewhat regular television gig now!)

  23. So www.nonstoplocal.com appears to be a news version of what excite.com (yes it's still on-line) is, because KHQ, KNDU,KNDO & KTMF all have there own local websites in addition to SWX still maintaining it's own website. And good on Cowles for doing something a bit different.

  24. Folks, don't want to make any unnecessary hype, but WAGA has been on their Secondary set since yesterday. This last happened in 2022 it only ended up being a small update (replacing the screens on the set with seamless LED's) but the current set is now almost 11 years old.

  25. The return of WJMN-TV 3 to ABC also reunites the station with that affiliation for the first time since Spring 1992, in which WJMN-TV 3 (and its former parent station WFRV-TV 5 in Green Bay, Wisconsin) were ABC stations who became CBS O&O stations from 1992 to 2007. CBS moved from WLUC-TV 6 in Marquette, Michigan and WBAY-TV 2 in Green Bay, Wisconsin, respectively, as Midwest Radio & TV, Inc., the owner of WCCO-TV 4 in Minneapolis, Minnesota and former parent of WFRV-TV 5/WJMN-TV 3, was purchased by CBS Corporation in 1992. For most of its life until the the launch of their separate studio presence in the early 2010s after Nexstar's purchase, WJMN-TV 3's newscast was basically a semi-satellite of WFRV-TV 5's newscast with an Upper Peninsula-specific schedule with separate syndicated programs, plus Upper Peninsula-specific news, sports and weather update inserts. What the Yoopers got was different from what the Cheeseheads down in N.E. Wisconsin got, aside from local news segments until 2012. WJMN-TV 3's 20-year affiliation with CBS was up, when CBS affiliation moved to WZMQ-TV 19.2. The combined operation under Morgan Murphy Media was successful in bringing more Yooper viewers to the ABC affiliate by combining the assets and personnel of local stations WJMN-TV 3 (who had better independent-style newscasts with a larger studio, but a weak, almost non-existant affiliate) with WBUP 10 (who had a weaker newscast and a strong network affiliate).

  30. Ive seen sets from smaller markets than Spokane. Its all about design. And this trend of adding local landmarks needs to end. Its tacky and the "local" should be in the form of content not set. Just do a good set. I dont fall into the "its a small market" mindset. Charlottesville is market 177. So thats not an excuse for bad design and bad lighting and bad graphics. Charlottesville Market 177

  31. Nine?!? There are basic cable networks with less original programming than that. Heck, how do they even decide which show gets a particular case?

  32. I just noticed WBKB in Alpena switched to the Morgan Murphy website design on BLOX Digital CMS. In Marquette, it looks like they finally redirected ABC10up.com and UPmatters.com to MyUPnow.com, although you see a quick flash of the old ABC 10 site, if you use that URL.

  33. Excellent catch. They mentioned some signal changes/upgrades during the My UP News announcement but didn't specify. I'm sure WJMN provides a much better signal on UHF compared to the VHF signals of WBUP and WBKP. Also, WJMN is positioned closer to Escanaba and toward the eastern end of the Upper Peninsula, so it definitely helps with over-the-air coverage. I'm told Marquette itself can be tricky, which is why WLUC has a translator there. WZMQ is the only station in the market not doing any simulcasting or using translators, from what I can tell.

  34. You can check out the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. half-hours from WBUP on Zeam. For some reason, they haven't added the morning show to the stream. The AM show is done at a round table with a monitor instead of the desk. Tom Kippen has been doing weather for all of the newscasts so far. It doesn't look like they've really added any staff at this point, other than merging teams, based on the meet the team page. The old website from Nexstar - UPmatters.com - still doesn't redirect to MyUPNow.com. ABC10UP.com throws a SSL error.

  35. Seeing their actual building in the open (which apparently is part of a drug store/antique mall but I can't tell because Google hasn't been by it since the blurry old days), it's a massive improvement to move into a facility constructed specifically for digital television. I'm sure that's why they were losing their staff.

  36. That's putting it mildly. That clip feels like a few minutes of some public access station....twenty years ago. (On the other hand, I know which on-screen talent I'd want to see more of... )

  37. The combined MyUP News operation launched today with the Morgan Murphy graphics package originating off a renovated WJMN set. As evidenced by the final ABC 10 newscast, it really was a bare bones operation in the end. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Hn1clTwcVk At least no one lost their jobs and everyone still has a role in the combined operation. In the end, this is a positive since WJMN can expand their news department over to WBUP/WBKP, especially since it was sidelined by losing CBS. You lose a voice in the process, but that voice was stretched too thin to begin with. Now that WZMQ has a functioning news department, the market now has 3 viable news operations.

  39. As someone who has seen the morning news on WBUP, it has simply been a replay of the 11 p.m. news, so this is actually something more than an expansion, putting the station in direct competition with TV6. That makes WZMQ 19 the only station without a morning show. No Marquette DMA stations do any midday/noon news. The four-station news race in that market now becomes three.

  40. Mornings are being expanded from just a half-hour (6:30am on WBUP) to a full two hours, 5:30 on WBUP goes away in favor of WJMN's hour-long offering at 6:00, and the 10:00pm gets shortened to a half-hour (compared to the current hour-long format) on WJMN. It also sounds like the news on WJMN on weekends 6:00, 6:30, and 10:30pm also goes away.

  41. It may just be since they brand their ABC/FOX as both KOTA Territory, they removed the ABC eye for consistency (Or the Gray Affiliate Logo Removal continues.) I do know GrayONE is coming later this year/early next year. There are quite a few stations ahead of them.

  43. It wouldn't surprise me if the same cases are on different shows, with the same actors, or maybe that's how they make them different. I wonder if these are outright sales of the facilities to other parties, or simply selling the building to a new owner through a sale/leaseback deal... Either way, it's going to bite them somehow in the future. When the rent goes up, then that's a big problem.
