Removing the time/temp just because the news gets rebroadcast would be extremely silly, this has never been an issue in the decades this practice has been happening. The consultants told them to get rid of the time. They made the change to the weekday newscast template, and forgot to change the weekend. Nobody who asked for the change is probably paying attention to the weekend news that closely. Maybe they have noticed, and don't care. I know it's 2025, and everything has to be treated as some grand conspiracy, but sometimes we have to apply Occam's Razor.5 points

Social media, yes, but also entertainment news websites. I myself check TV Insider, TVLine, Latenighter, io9, Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, Deadline, and others.3 points

It's been the 7th place station there since the beginning of time. And it doesn't help matters to be so close to Detroit, Lima, and even have CBET pumped in from Windsor with some things the CBC carries that NBC carries as well....1 point

Why does Sinclair always seem to get in a snit fit with this one provider? They're literally in the eighth subbasement of ratings in that market and the only valuable thing (it ain't The National Desk) they provide is NBC programming, which...Buckeye can just direct them to Peacock these days and they'd probably be more reliable there. This isn't 2013 and viewers have choices now. SBG should just take whatever they can get and fight battles in markets where their ratings can be tabulated.1 point

Well, it's the summer and not much is happening in the stations these days, so this our defacto banter to keep the board and presence alive . Its also a way to speculate future talent changes and lineups, which a lot of us seem to be interested in over the years since the inception of these forums. We used to even have dedicated threads about specific talents which we've long stopped doing.1 point

Bold of anyone to assume that Carr will do anything based on FCC precedent and not use the commission as a political weapon and tool to enrich his friends. The GOP House and Senate will dutifully fall in line with whatever Carr demands, with either Susan Collins or Mitch or Murkowski clutching their pearls or some stupid stunt and it won’t matter because their votes are irrelevant to the outcome anyway. And the dems will be too feckless, useless and old to do anything. The fix is in.1 point

Meanwhile South Park (a Paramount entity) just premiered its 27th season featuring a naked President Trump with a microscopic private part in a relationship with The Devil --- just typing it out sounds insane lol. A character even urges others to be quiet before Paramount cancels them. We'll see what the blow back from that is. While Colbert's cancellation may definitely be influenced by Trump I doubt it's the sole reason given, being that other Paramount entities feature even sharper Trump criticism.1 point

I think they'll continue with coverage leading up to the race & honestly, this might be better for them in terms of coverage of the actual Oaks race because I think when it was on USA/Peacock, any races that aired there, was exclusively live to them & WAVE3 aired the races on a slight tape delay.1 point

And when that mercifully closes, expect Skydance to dispose of CBS and sell it all to Nexstar. Because Perry Sook will easily agree to the demands set forth by Brendan Carr against employees doing actual journalism, that deal will assuredly be greenlit in a matter of weeks. Carr might even reward Perry for his fealty and do away with the ownership caps completely.1 point

It was actually off the air for the year after the pandemic botched their plan to move the operation to New York so NBC could attempt to have an ABC-like appearance lineup where someone could do GMA, Live, and The View in a matter of hours, just with Today and I guess Kelly Clarkson...forgetting that E! is a cable network and a few celebrities would rather appear on a Midwestern morning zoo than be stuck on that channel. Frankly, the end of the entertainment news show being a thing with Extra being a shambling shell of its former self and ET's decline where stations don't even need a proper reason to pre-empt any longer, the entire form is dead. Social media brings all the entertainment news first and without the lameness of editing around corporate sensitivities.1 point

I can’t speak for the WPVI thread but for New York, it’s been interesting to point only when notable fill in or pairings are made. For instance they began rotating several network level talent, Liz Cho anchoring weekend mornings or at 11, etc.1 point

This isn’t a slam on participants but I don’t understand why certain threads — notably this one and WPVI — seem to be flooded with posts regarding whom is subbing for whom. Maybe because it’s summer the thread is short on content.1 point

Corporate contingency plan. Likely a playbook written years ago, and refined with lessons learned from Hurricane Harvey flooding KHOU. Have a few strategic locations with fully functional second control rooms, studios, and a large enough of an operation where they have staff levels to support a sudden, unexpected addition without harming the host station’s product too much. Plus, MSP and ATL are both Delta hubs - so there are frequent flights between both cities to get talent there.1 point

And for the record, Rincon closed on WICS/WICD, KHQA, KTVO and WVTV on July 9th. So can we expect any de-Sinclair-ing of these stations any time soon? Here's a press release from WVTV: https://cw18milwaukee.com/fcc/rincon-broadcasting-group-acquires-wvtv-milwaukee# Not even a blip on Sinclair's website about divesting these stations. So did they really sell them and still plan on running them from the inside out?1 point

A big loss in Oregon television is coming up in November... Jeff Gianola's retirement. 43 years on television, 42 of them in Portland. The first 15 years at KATU, and now the last 27 years at KOIN. Not surprising to say that his last newscast will be late November, which sounds more likely he'll retire before Thanksgiving and the holiday season. https://www.adweek.com/tvspy/longtime-portland-anchor-jeff-gianola-to-retire-in-november/1 point

Sinclair once again operates KBSI Cape Girardeau and WDKA Paducah. They've purchased the non-license assets of the two as Standard Media (under Community News Group) continues to own them. However, there's an option in the future for Sinclair to also own both, not just operate. https://sbgi.net/sinclair-acquires-assets-of-wdka-in-paduca-ky-and-kbsi-in-cape-girardeau-mo/1 point

To clarify his post above... WFIE launched a new brand at 12 Noon today. Except... its not a new brand. Temporary? Maybe, but currently unsure. I checked Zeam and the later 4:00, 5:00, and 6:00 p.m. newscasts... it still goes by 14 News, so I wouldn't go full gorilla on this change just yet.1 point

That really unfair, especially that a lot of young tv personalities get to large markets in under 10 years more like 6 years a face pressure. A long time ago it would take a decade to hit a large market. Honestly I don’t like big markets personally I prefer small markets even with the shitty pay because at least you’re comfortable mistakes are made but at least you don’t have to deal with high pressure and inflated egos of being in a big market. I told myself if I reenter I’m not even gonna go my hometown, ima try to stay 30 and up. Kansas City is the most tolerable market.1 point

Minor question concerning WUPA: I noticed that it's on RF 36/virtual 69, while WATL, which is virtual 36, is on RF 25. Is there a reason for that arrangement? Or could the stations petition the FCC to allow them to swap RF positions at the time of the affiliation switch? And if so, could WUPA then move to virtual 25?1 point

Resurrecting this from the dead because this old package still lives on... on Blue Ridge Communications' weeknight local newscast at 5:00pm for the Poconos. EDIT: Also, for a cable company, they have a decent set.1 point

I’d tend to agree with that. I’m just imagining reporters of the past like Max Robinson in the age of social media where you’re inclined to share as part of the engagement strategy. Imagine Mark Giangreco or Steve Bartelstein in the current age of social media given how unhinged they could be on air at times?1 point

nah. The old guard just didn't have socials so the only way you'd know someone on TV had disordered personality would be to work with them or somehow interact. God forbid if they're the ND's or GM's favorite... newsies can tell stories. Just recently we learned about Barbara Walters, although discerning people would've picked up on what she's really like just by watching her interviews. The late Ike Seamans from WTVJ said this in the late 2000s too - most new talent coming in wants to see themselves on TV, not do journalism. The socials made this even more apparent and now they get to feed off it twice - TV *and* socials. All that's much harder to hide nowadays probably why you're noticing it and think there's more of it. It's always been there. Come to think of it the news business, from my interactions with people within it for 25 years, tends to attract a lot of unsavory people, narcissists primarily, who can feed off small things like saying they work at so and so station up to the fact they're on air and known. This especially true of the big-name stations. Which isn't to say there are no nice, normal people. I don't think you should let the messyness stop of you from trying out a career you might enjoy. I believe there's a video of Marilyn Mitzell, who used to work at WSVN, on Youtube where she specifically tells people - keep your head down, stay away from office drama - simple yet 90% effective imo. And if you land at a shop whose management does not suffer employee drama it very likely would end up being a very fulfilling career.1 point

While James Spann won't be involved 24/7 (even though it seems like it would be given his work ethic), it's a launching pad to provide a service for all of Alabama and give timely weather information without having to break into programming, (although watching Spann on TV is a must-see when the suspenders are on!) Sinclair is lacking in the live-streaming department, especially after bungling STIRR and their limited products on NewsON. Nexstar is slowly catching up with their station apps and live-streaming, but they have a ways to go as well. Now, James Spann (and his brand) can be available to anyone with a working and compatible device, and his operation can focus on the entire state. Sinclair missed an opportunity to put him on a more visible platform in Alabama, especially when Alan Sealls stepped aside from WPMI. But Thomas Geboy is a good addiion to them locally.1 point

On the Broadcast Plaza Discord, Chase Wilson, who has been involved in the project, said that Spann and his co-partners had been working on developing the Alabama Weather Network since 2023. He also stated it would be a member of the National Weather Network, the cooperative co-founded by Tennessee Valley Weather managing meteorologist Ben Luna (who designed the logo with Wilson) of which Laubhan’s Mississippi Live Weather is a member service.1 point

Based on the "audience" numbers for Merit Street, it does not seem many wanted to find him. Some people just don't know how to read a room. If he has money to burn, that's his problem.1 point

You, and I, and others on this board may feel that way. But we can't speak for everyone else. There is an audience Phil is trying to reach, and if that audience wants his content they will find it. Remember that we now live in an era of narrowcasting, not broadcasting. Now, we can debate on whether this was a smart business move on McGraw's part, but that story will unfold in the long-term. But if you want him to go away, just don't watch.1 point

Longtime religious broadcaster and evangelist Jimmy Swaggart has passed away at the age of 90. Talented preacher, singer, musician. Cousin of Jerry Lee Lewis and Mickey Gilley. Overcame scandal in the 80's and founded SBN, SonLife Broadcasting Network. Still preaching, singing, and playing that famous piano up until just a few weeks ago. Survived by wife Frances and son Donnie.1 point

Frank Gari brought Lalo's Cool Hand Luke into the 80s and early 90s with NewsSeries 2000. I remember hearing that Gari version on KRDO ABC13 in Colorado Springs (my hometown) when I was a kid. I didn't hear the Lalo Schifrin original until I was a senior in high school and the internet came along. We'll miss Lalo a great deal. Oh, and say Hello to Al Primo for us.
