  1. I get the business intent of doing a straight knockoff of ABC WNT - it's what viewers expect on that channel at that hour and they only had a few months to pull it together with little to no capital investment - but I think I'm still a little shocked that it is really that much of a knockoff. I gave up trying to believe TV news is driven by an actual strategy when I left the business almost a decade ago, but one would think this program slowly develops its own identity which makes watching worthwhile. Not all knockoffs are equal. Will this be Kirkland Signature World News or Great Value?

  2. Not sure why we're collectively shitting on the World News broadcast... It's pretty impressive for a local station. I'm usually quick to denounce the "more news" mindset that has infected local television, but I understand what the goal is here. Yes, it's "more news", but it's replacing a network newscast and going up against network news. They're trying something that's not just the same local stories from 30 minutes ago run on a loop. It's different, and we should be celebrating that.

  3. Definitely not up there with John Beard. He had a pretty solid career at KNBC before going to KTTV. Elex is/was popular with the younger viewers, but never drew enough eyeballs to make them competitive. He started his KTTV career post KABC doing GDLA.

  4. Why do I see so much complaining about this? This is great for local viewers. It’s a good, old-fashioned shakeup. The stations are forced to kick it up a notch and compete again. Things got stale. Even the networks are going in for the fight. NBC has sent Tom Llamas to South Florida to anchor this week. They’re getting creative again, duking it out for viewers and talking directly to the viewers. It’s not just adding some new jumpbacks or new drone vid, or sharpening the hues a bit on the news opens, or God forbid the expense of a new graphics package which would have to be adopted by all corporate stations. They’re trying new things, taking risks, in Miami. The public wins.

  5. it adds to WSVN/Sunbeam bottom line for the mere cost of broadcast gear and probably a couple of syndication packs, and a few bucks to Findal to air it on 18.1 ABC, "allegedly", keeps all or most of the retrans fees, probably negotiates it on its own too. WSVN gets to double commercial airtime, and sells it also on behalf of ABC, for a fee. Basically, Sunbeam is now selling 7News at 5 etc ad time twice, for $800-$3000 each, without having to run a second newsroom. Edit: Actually, Sunbeam now have double the ad inventory in any time slot not filled by ABC network programming. The rest is split with ABC, or they sell ad time for them and get 15% customary ad sales fee.

  6. What do you mean? Christine Devine has been the lead co-anchor at FOX11 since the early 90s. Outlasting co-anchors Chris Harris (RIP), Bob Donley, John Beard, Carlos Amezcua, Jeff Michael, Dan Cohen and now Elex Michaelson. She has as much experience and gravitas in the market as Colleen Williams and Pat Harvey.

  7. We need a black Telemundo, with news, shows I don’t know about sports. I never watch anything Byron does keep in mind he killed the only black news outlet and merged it into TheGrio, saying we need a “good news channel”, I could rant about older black people for hours anyways we need a news outlet targeted toward us or a digital multicast network that has both news and shows. We need a Jorge Ramos (like the former Univision anchor) but for black people we could name him Laquerious Holt lol. We could have commentators like Dr. Umar Johnson, and Tariq Nasheed, and Judge Joe Brown, Paris Denard. but no Roland Martin (I don’t like him).

  8. The three other Black cable networks--TV One, its sister Cleo TV, and Bryon Allen's TheGrio--are all pretty much rerun farms, although TV One also delves into true crime and cooking shows. TV One use to have more variety in their programming, showing more movies (including original ones) and their Unsung series was always well-done.

  9. Fox extended their deal with Hulu/Disney last year to continue airing in-season shows the day after their linear broadcast. My guess is that a program's library (in all or parts) will be available on Fox One too. For example, only season 3 of Animal Control is available on Hulu and not the previous seasons. One would assume, season 1 & 2 will be on Fox One and once season 4 starts, then season 3 moves from Hulu to Fox One and so on.... I think the question is whether all Fox entertainment programs move to Fox One once the Hulu deal ends in 2029 or will they continue sharing content. I believe so. i think they want to offer bundles (Fox One & Fox Nation or Fox One, Fox Nation & Tubi, etc..) down the line too.

  10. This is my problem. I have no issue with a national/international-focused show that deviates from the endless hours of local, but damn. It's uninspired and lazy, and setting themselves up for potential legal action if they don't tone down the ABC beef.

  11. And this is separate from their FOX Nation streaming channel?
    2 points
  12. Isn't this something they could have just partnered with another streaming service for in exchange for collecting a fee from said streaming service? Hulu and company or HBO Max come to mind. That part.

  13. You remember him from either WTVG Toledo or WABC-TV New York. But for almost 10 years, he went and is still home in Northeast Ohio. WEWS' Rob Powers is now elite in his home state. He gets into the Ohio A.P. Hall of Fame. For one of the best anchors in the country, very well deserved. https://www.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1235536765285356&id=100064871315060

  14. They are hardly alone, Disney has a lot of non-WLS business operations in that building. I know Disney had other Chicago office locations pre-COVID/the normalization of working from home, so I would imagine they would have consolidated what they could into 190 N by now. They could also sublease the space the way they do in San Francisco (and I'm not just talking about KRON! There's a law firm, and TK Elevator's San Francisco office in the building too.) They are already doing this with the Potbelly.

  15. Ok, yes … their “World News” is cringey. Comical in its attempts to emulate ABC. And the anchor is totally trying to sound like Muir, which is just sad. I didn’t think it would be this bad.

  16. I guess I can now say that this historic day in South Florida television history (Aug 4, 2025) is in the books and hopefully NO MORE affiliation switches happen but never say never because people thought that 1995 would be the last time this would happen but here we are 30 years later. If Local 10 were to be affiliated with a network again, The CW would be the best choice because they don’t have much programming outside of primetime (8-10pm) and weekend sports, plus it allows the station to continue it’s local-first vision that they clearly want to do now.

  17. That looks like it was thrown together 5 minutes before the station went on air.

  18. I don't think it's a great idea to use the NY project as a guide for what will happen elsewhere. The circumstances are wildly different. ABC did not move to the new NY facility simply because some of the buildings were "old". A properly-maintained 100-year-old building will last for another 100 years.

  20. Thank you. That was somewhat of a ridiculous thing to say lol. Elex is solid but doesn’t come anywhere close to John Beard. Hell, he isn’t even Carlos Amuezca.

  21. Where is FOX Soul they have a chance to be better than BET (which I have a feeling is gonna go go crap under skydance) and Bounce TV. Can black people just have one network that caters to them.

  22. I'm not sure about ranking his popularity amongst the local news anchors here in Los Angeles, but he was trusted enough to host a weekly political show that has aired on Friday nights for the last eight years ("The Issue Is"), and it's syndicated to many stations throughout California (including some non-Fox affiliated stations). He's also moderated several local and state electoral candidate debates. And yes, he was at KABC previously prior to joining KTTV in 2017, and before that he was at XETV in San Diego. His last day at KTTV is Friday, August 15, and he posted a message on X...

  23. Seven months after being ridiculously fired from WDJT for calling out Elon Musk’s Nazi salute, Sam Kuffel is coming back to Wisconsin TV at WGBA in a temporary fill-in role as morning meteorologist Perhaps waiting out a noncompete before coming back at WTMJ?

  24. Yep. He left KABC several years back, sounded like he wasn’t happy there, or getting a chance to anchor. Anchoring the 10pm newscast at KTTV is a big deal and Elex was well regarded in the market and popular with younger viewers. He was certainly right up there with John Beard.

  25. I say give WPLG a chance with its World News broadcast. I appreciate that they didn't just throw in a syndicated show or another standard newscast - which they certainly could've chosen to do instead. The fact a local station is making an attempt at a broadcast like that to begin with deserves a chance. Personally I believe there is an audience that wants an alternative to what the networks currently offer at 6:30 but still having a national/international focus. Also, their World News show has only been on the air one day so far. With time I'm sure they will refine it and make any necessary changes to improve on a solid idea. Branding wise, I personally think the music needs to be changed out. Graphics are very solid however.

  28. Got to give them credit for attempting to separate local and news stories. Usually non big 3 stations stick these after the "A block" and run them throughout the rest of the show. I would imagine they still have CNN as their provider?

  29. It looks a modded version of the RSN look is going to be the generic graphical look for NBC Sports going forward. This was seen during their coverage of the Track & Field Nationals on Sunday:

  30. Probably take 5 years off that prediction now that ABC was the first to jump. Even Les Moonves when he ran CBS, far back as 2010-2012, had a CBS network feed ready in case an affiliate got too uppity during negotiations. If im not mistaken he said publicly that his preference is direct CBS network feed to Comcast, Charter etc, no affiliates needed

  31. Geez they shafted KEYE. All these other Sinclair sets, while not spectacular, look immensely better.
    1 point
  32. You do have a point because the networks can just create their own O&Os if they absolutely want to and we’ve seen it before with how NBC bought WBTS, KNTV, and WTVJ outright when the former affiliates WHDH, KRON, and WSVN said NO to astronomical rates. In addition to that, all networks have streaming services so most station affiliations are almost irrelevant anyway.

  36. Well, at least it’s not the small, small market Sinclair set. The one with all the brick, a 50” or 60” screen or two, and a dull background behind the anchor. Cough, cough - KVAL/KMTR, KIMA, KEPR, KLEW (canceled), KRCR, KBAK, etc.

  37. Agreed. I just don't think WLS is aching for an overhaul. Maybe a mild refresh, which is what a video screen is.

  40. It really does and what’s the purpose of doing world/national news when that’s what is being aired on every other station at 6:30…especially if you’re trying to say you’re a “local station”?

  42. So basically people will have to switch from channel 10 to 18 on their TV service to get ABC programming. I’m sure a lot of viewers will be mad they can’t find Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! anymore if WPLG isn’t carried. Other than that, I don’t think many will be upset or even notice ABC is from a different station.

  47. There's some turnover at KDKA-TV ahead of the merger. Anchors Kym Gable and Linsday Ward were let go: https://triblive.com/aande/movies-tv/tv-talk-2-anchors-laid-off-at-kdka-tv/ Also at that station, meteorologist Kristin Emery is retiring on August 28th (and she insists it's on her own terms): https://triblive.com/aande/movies-tv/tv-talk-kdka-tv-forecaster-announces-retirement

  48. Now that the ABC and WABC operations are in one building, we are now seeing the shared resources (talent included) for both national and local productions. Jeff Smith and Lee Goldberg have appeared on World News Tonight many times now. Yesterday also marked Lee's 29th year with WABC. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DMskm6OMA3_/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=YWoxeDRjYmY0dWJ0

  49. I think, unlike George, Lester actually wants to reduce his workload. As for contributing, NBC has a precedent with that- Brokaw sat in on election night for many years after Nightly. Often times, we see an anchor emerita so a special interview- Diane Sawyer still does a limited number for ABC on occasion. No matter what, expect Lester's role to be reduced, and get smaller over time as he get s closer to full retirement.

  50. Hello, everyone. I have an update regarding LocalNewsTalk and our partner Discord server The NewsCenter. On Monday, The NewsCenter announced that it will be merging with the Broadcast Plaza Discord server. Emma's announcement to The NewsCenter follows. There have been a few questions as to what is happening to LocalNewsTalk following this merger. The answer is: not much! LocalNewsTalk will continue to exist, and we are working with Broadcast Plaza to continue the partnership we started with The NewsCenter. We will be updating our Discord page and adopting some Broadcast Plaza co-branding in the coming days and weeks. While the best place for questions about this merger remains the #repack channel mentioned above, I will do my best to answer any questions that this side of things may have below.
