  2. WFAA reverted to their pre-Nexstar copyright this morning. Good Morning Texas also reverted to the pre-Nexstar legalese and TEGNA-era copyright.

  3. If they had just done the divestitures in the first place, we wouldn't be talking about this. In any case, I agree with you.

  5. Ratings usually parallel market share, so markets that seem to combine any of the top 4 with or without an existing -opoly are likely to be divested if the courts get their way. Now in a place like Dallas where WFAA/KFAA and KDAF are, they're likely safe because the latter two stations don't hold a candle to WFAA's reach and market share.

  10. Garbage like this sometimes makes me feel like Nexstar is doing us a service by killing off local television news. But thanks KHQ for bringing me all this “content”. I love content. I am a good consumer.

  11. Whoever decided "as we come on the air tonight" needs to be said in the first 30 seconds of every newscast deserves a life full of minor inconveniences and to step on legos when they get up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night.

  12. WABC’s on-air appearance before 2024-2025 was shameful. The graphics before standardization were awful. The set they were on from 2006-2011 was one of the worst. Praise to whoever took over and invested in the visual identity of the nation’s #1 news station.

  13. I'm sure Ghosts is. It had a weeknight test run on the CBS sidecar stations in the fall, and WPSG (and possibly other stations too) is still airing it on the weekends. Abbott definitely could, especially since they hit their 88th episode (the bare minimum) just last night. Or they could wait until next fall.

  14. "NonStop Local Pulse Prime" is....a mouthful. Either "Pulse" or "Prime" needs to go, but I'm not sure which. Are their newscasts in other dayparts just called "NonStop Local Pulse"? And then there's the announcer's enunciation-free delivery....

  15. I doubt Nexstar would sell their CW station.

  16. wut? Who told you Christians don't or can't enjoy MMA? I personally do not, but some of the most prolific MMA, boxing, etc contact sports fighters are Eastern Orthodox Christians. Our priests get in on it, either as spectators, some known to train/practice contact sports, Serbia has several bishops who are karate black belts.

  17. No. KDKA is CBS Strongest station and a AFC market.

  18. Seems like WANE had met halfway. They changed its voiceover, yet kept the old graphics. Could that be renamed to The Ever Evolving Nexstar Graphics and Voice Situation Thread? WSAV already changed its voiceover and graphics.

  20. Lots of amazing talent from the networks, too. Matt Carothers, Ken Rudulph (who also spent time at KOVR/KMAX during his career), Todd Schrupp, Mike Joyce, Simon Bray, Christina Blacker, etc., are just a few I can think of who I watched over the year. For the record, when the networks were once separate as TVG and HRTV, I preferred TVG and their coverage every single time. Plus, it was available in more homes than HRTV so there was a better chance you'd get TVG over the other. Daily Racing Form (one of the most successful, if not THE most successful, horse racing newspapers out there) has a great article on its upcoming demise. Some bullet points: Starting in late 2026, it will simulcast feeds from its partner tracks instead of accompanying them with live studio shows within its Live Racing! banner (in the past, there were shows like Television Games, the network's former namesake, Trackside Live, :58 Flat, Drive Time, The Morning Line, and more). TVG will continue to operate as its account-wagering company, so the brand is not going away entirely. It will actually direct customers of its sports betting app, FanDuel, to TVG for horse racing bets, since there is a separate one for FanDuel Racing. Simulcast feeds from TVG's partner tracks (such as Gulfstream Park in my backyard) will continue to be available on the apps. Because of contractual obligations, onsite coverage and studio productions will continue through the end of the year at select locations, including Keeneland, Del Mar, the three Triple Crown races (Kentucky, Preakness, Belmont), and the Breeders' Cup. Some studio personnel will begin to be laid off in July, though some will be retained to produce that on-site coverage from those locations (mentioned above) through the end of November. https://www.drf.com/news/fanduel-tv-cease-operating-after-2027

  24. https://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2026/3/24/nexstar-eyes-kdka Sounds like Nexstar isn’t done yet. Apparently they want KDKA in Pittsburgh too. Although unlikely, maybe CBS can arrange a swap of KDKA and WPKD for either WUSA or KHOU.

  25. Won't be, the court order is status quo ante item, as Tegna was immediately preceding the pending controversy (page 21 line 19) TRO expires in 14 days, bench hearing set for April 7 at 2pm to argue preliminary injunction. Judge went with Directv vs Nexstar though, State Plaintiffs may have failed, or judge thought Drectv was the stronger more immediate risk

  26. The Sinclair backlash was more politically-driven. After John Oliver’s 2017 feature on Sinclair and their right-wing must-runs during newscasts, backlash grew against the deal from the public. What killed the Sinclair acquisition was their slick way of putting some stations in sidecars. Nexstar wasn’t known for forcing ideological must-runs on their stations then and were still a relatively obscure company to the public.

  27. Like the level of backlash when Nexstar bought Tribune was nothing compared to Sinclair's attempt.
    1 point
  28. I can only imagine how pissed the people at Sinclair must be since their antics were kept in check by regulators and government officials, while Nexstar is getting a free pass from everyone.

  31. Nexstar has responded to the TRO but the filling is under seal. We may or may not find out what they argued, or if we do, it will be heavily redacted. California et. al. filed copies of Nexstar SEC disclosures where the company told investors almost all of the $300 mil. in synergies will be due to higher retrans fees Tegna stations will be collecting - it is customary for a retrans contract to have a clause that automatically increases the retrans fee to bring it up to par with what the new owner receives. Nexstar counsel argued over email with the deputy AG, that they're bringing the case up at midnight, asking for a 3pm meeting, and mentions other plaintiffs - the other states - having had access to evidence she participated in regulatory review for a year, none of them raised issues with Nexstar privately. He's asking her why they waited so long. In the memorandum Plaintiff States assert they contacted Nexstar on 3/10 to work on timing and were ignored He mentions the TRO was filed by California claiming immediate harm but the FCC has an order preventing retrans fees from increasing until November. And that the relief California wants would be harmful to the company. TRO will probably fail as local rules require immediate harm, plaintiffs were aware of evidence for months thus no emergency Now California et al have till 3/26 to respond

  32. ACCUWeather Network seems to have gone home they seem to just air segments when they stop airing the pretape forecast in a loop maybe an hour or 2 is live then put it on a loop. And also just showing the national maps late at night & most of the weekend guessing they may air forecast in the morning before it's just the national maps in a loop. ACCUWeather needs to do better. FOX Weather is light years better than ACCUWeather in my opinion I like the local forecast seeing 48 hours seeing the radar & minutecast as well.

  33. A stark reminder of the fragility of life, just 2 weeks prior he was alive and well. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DVcAtGYEhWJ/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== His final message to the world couldn't be more fitting; "Now more than ever we need to promote and protect the truth! It's an obligation we all have. I'm still pretty sad he's no longer here.. . He was in such good spirits just two weeks before, definitely a tragic loss and gone too soon.

  34. These greenlit deals (WTVA, WLFI, WTHI) are not in conflict with other stations in their markets, so they were able to close with no issues from the FCC and DOJ. Others, like WSIL, WAAY and WCOV conflict with existing stations, and could cause issues with market share as well.

  35. I hope the state of Illinois is taking serious notes right now since this involves WSIL.

  36. In 2 (and 4), it depends on the ruling. It could be either. In 3 (and 4), correct, since the antitrust ruling would not apply they can keep everything in their bloated markets. As far as legacy stations, probably not. However, if a buyer wants a legacy Nexstar station instead of the acquired Tegna station in a market, then the courts might entertain that as long as it gets back into compliance if Scenario 1 is not the end result.
    1 point
  37. Yes, that is correct. Looking through the court cases, I see four (not three) scenarios. 1) Everything is a-ok. The cap is advisory and there is no antitrust issue, so Tegna can be absorbed into Nexstar without any legal repercussions. This would be a big win for Nexstar. 2) The cap is advisory and Nexstar is not violating that, but there ARE antitrust issues in certain markets (overlap markets mainly) that warrant a sale to an independent third party. In this case, the states' case is accepted but the interest groups' case is denied. 3) The cap is the law and Nexstar must sell Tegna stations in newly acquired markets. However, there are no antitrust issues, so they can keep the overlaps within existing markets. This is the opposite scenario to Scenario 2. 4) Both antitrust and cap violations are found (basically a combination of both Scenarios 2 and 3), which basically requires a near-unwinding of the deal. This is the nuclear option if they don't get their way and both sets of plaintiffs win.

  38. Wouldn't this mean that they would have to transfer the Tegna stations to a trust?

  42. I'll say the one relevant thing left for celebrity shows is that they are a reliable source for celebrity gossip unlike many online bloggers. Stefon Diggs and Cardi B breaking up sounds more reliable coming from Access Hollywood than some blogger. Because the situations on Maury (likewise with daytime court shows) are evergreen. Are one of these 6 men the father of my baby? is a timeless dilemma lol. Talk shows however rely on current events and guests promoting current projects.

  44. Well, keep in mind that all of the shows that are ending are syndicated, so not every NBC station would need to fill gaps. If they wanted to bring back DOOL, they would need to either replace NBC News Daily (which wouldn't solve the problem since there would still be two empty hours), take another hour from the affiliates, or syndicate DOOL/make it exclusive to the O&Os. None of those seem all that likely to me, but I guess anything is possible.

  45. Ugh, , Damn. This is some difficult news to bear. I really revered him. Im honestly a little bit heartbroken. I seemed to believe he could live much longer because of how well he l had taken care of himself. Even though he was no longer on TV, it seemed like he was always available in someway. I mostly remember him on Fox 5. The face of that channel really at the time. I remember watching him leading in, after American Idol in the late 2000s and 2010s. He was so respected and well liked here on these forums, we always talked about him. Especially during the earlier days of this forum. Ernie Anastos was is on par with all of New York's great anchors we all know, Roger Grimsby, Bill Beutel, Chuck Scarborough, etc, he was the face of WABC in the 80s and then of course WNYW in through the 2000s. I miss his calm demeanor and his smile. Great wholesome man with a lot of integrity, valor and trust. He will be missed. May he rest in peace and may our memories of him keep his spirit alive.

  47. This one is really sad. He was a legendary news figure in this great city.

  48. There are other posts on Ch. 7 board too. He also worked for WCBS2, and prior to moving to NY to work for almost every station (WNBC and PIX are the exceptions) he was at WPRI in Providence where some of us first saw him. Because he worked at so many NY stations, perhaps all further posts should go into the main NY thread?
