  1. I still would love to see Velshi and Ruhle paired up again. That 11AM/1PM hour was one of the best news hours in television.

  2. This seems inconsequential. My boss is condescending to me from time to time as well. Hardly worthy of a headline.

  3. Honestly, none of this is surprising. Bosses, regardless of the industry, are often jerks and Khemlani is no different. Morale has long been a problem at CBS News so it will take a significant amount of time for that to improve and constantly cutting resources/people only slows that process. Since his contract expires next year and baring any ‘serious’ allegations, my guess is that he survives this and retires. There doesn't appear to be enough currently to justify dismissal.

  4. Although the NBC O&Os on Peacock are an hour delayed, they do offer live streaming for all newscasts from their website and apps. Nexstar does not do that anymore. In NY where Nexstar (oops Mission, wink, wink) competes with only O&O flagship stations all of which offer live streaming it is less an issue other than pure stupidity in a world where the cord was cut. In other markets where Nexstar controls multiple stations, it can actually be a safety issue when major events or weather issues arise and too many viewers do not have cable access. As brought up in other discussions of this very issue elsewhere on this site, it is irresponsible for Perry Sook to decide this approach. It makes Nexstar the not "must go to" station for live news.

  5. In the streaming era of today, this is a terrible move. Don't know what they were thinking. You'd get the 11pm news live before the 10pm reboradcast at 12am. Also I wonder if there's any update on the new studio...my guess is they'd want it done before February sweeps?

  6. Yep it’s the real set.

  7. All I know is one thing: The way to get noticed is to be different. Just rehashing the same thing everybody else does nationwide isn't going to accomplish a thing. You need not only difference in branding, but difference in products. Same four interchangeable people in an interchangeable studio that looks like the bridge of the Starship Enterprise on all four local TV channels does not make for a lot of differentiation. Maybe if you're in first or second place, you don't want to rock the boat too much. But if you're one of the laggards, why are you beating your head against the wall doing what everybody else is doing?

  8. Back in the analog era, the signals used to overlap a lot more between Dayton and Cincinnati (and even Louisville). IIRC, stations like WSTR and WXIX even had translators in the Dayton area. Dayton, in reality was the market that Akron/Canton never was, since they were blessed with VHF allocations from the get-go, while Akron never got theirs mostly because Pittsburgh was under-stationed, and didn't sign on most of their stations until the late 50's. And other market's tom-foolery with their daytime schedules made alternate affiliates a nice thing to have if they wanted to see a network show that another affiliate pre-empted. Digital-wise, when the stations shifted to UHF, the contours shrank, and likely in the repack, shrank even more because of close-spacing of frequencies. This makes DXing virtually impossible, because what was once likely a distant station, is on the same frequency as a local one, and when the skies act up, can cause havoc.

  9. Touche. They also had the similar variant with a different font, before the prior "blue" package. Zucker was the one who started a decade ago. The years are beginning to run together these days...

  10. You know, as I do, that Creative Services is controlled by former news producers who have no background in marketing (or marketing execs with no experience in Television creative) and Consultants. Few understand how to convert research to a ratings bump because they were never trained in that.

  17. Then-WBTI's Dayton translator was more about increasing the coverage area of their subscription TV service. WXIX never had one, as far as I know.

  19. Really nice thoughtful depth to it and some warmth vs a sea of digital walls. Makes the space appear much larger than a typical set of this size. The 2 shot could use a change - the “regular” TV floating there is odd and there’s probably another way to integrate that. Overall well done trying something different than the 2013-present trends.

  20. Yep, just about every Nexstar station now runs their stream on a 2 hour delay. As of this very late night post, KTLA still appears to be live, but it probably won’t last long.

  23. Going back to news, another issue I see is everything feels contrived. Local or national, tv news outlets appear to be going extra hard to seem like they care about the viewer or are invested in the comminity. Be it through excessive hours of news programming, overly dramatic weather coverage, ornate graphics, or gimmiks, it feels forced. I watched an Australian newscast from the 90s and it struck me how raw, no nonsence and simply news oriented foreign broadcasters like the BBC and SBS were, without being boring. Even the "feel good" story at the end about a man duplicating his grandfather's flight across the English channel comes off as a magazine piece rather than cheesy or selling false hope. Even now, foreign countries like Jamaica with a lot smaller production values deliver a much more straight newscast than what we get in the states today.

  24. That really is one of the keys to the death of local media. There are also business Dynamics such as the death of local business and more efficient forms of advertising through the internet, but the type of person running these stations is definitely one of the factors. Non creative people running a creative business.

  26. Some have called this "KCAL News" branding awkward and odd because the indepdendent's calls were chosen instead of the heritage CBS station's. But when you consider the eyemark is seen not only in all KCAL newscasts but graces the floor under the anchor desk, the station is for all practical purposes no longer an indie but a second CBS O&O. From 2003 until last week, the CBS eye was purposely absent from all KCAL 9 News graphic design. The set is pretty darned nice (so is KTLA's). It looks much more vast than the old KCAL set it replaced. It almost looks too big in a way; the weather and traffic anchors seem kind of small sitting at those desks. The audio seemed flat the other day, almost like the sound of people talking in a big empty hall. Somebody said it, and I agree: re the glitches and imperfections, this is the kind of thing KTLA would pull off perfectly. "The Desk" feature I like a little better than some others here do; it isn't the first time in L.A. that kind of thing has been done; KCOP's brief "Real News" in the mid-1990s or so had Ross Becker and others strolling around the newsroom and stopping at the assignment desk. Boy did that idea go south fast... O&O graphic design, music, etc, has been standardized by parent networks for a long time, but this CBS reworking finishes off most all local identity, making newscasts replicas of the network version. I'd like to see stations retain SOME unique qualities, like channel numbers... but I guess modern TV viewing and streaming makes clicking a number on the remote less relevant. (It's odd that WCBS hasn't changed a thing yet) It was a jolt to go through the Web site and see every reference to CBS 2, CBS 2 News, KCBS, etc absolutely gone. The station that revolutionized local news in 1960, the station of Dunphy, Bill Stout, Clete Roberts, Joseph Benti, Connie Chung, and others deserves something a little better than that -- even if its news ratings have been at the bottom of the heap for a long time.

  30. I was literally just thinking this. There are plenty of CBS 2’s across the country, but only one KCAL and CBS Los Angeles. I don’t know how much more unique and local you can get than that.

  31. Most viewers probably don't care, they're turning on one channel or the other and see the same faces they usually do. Folks were complaining about "CBS News (city)" not being "unique" enough and whatever, and then when given "KCAL News" are upset about that. It's a good brand. It translates well cross-platform, and there's no other "KCAL News" out there. KCAL was seen as the stronger brand and there's nothing wrong with that.

  34. Are they still building the new studio? I was fortunate enough to visit LA a few weeks ago and I was able to witness KTLA's local coverage. They just debuted a great looking studio and they seem to have a better designed look to their graphics. KTLA's use of the graphics package makes WPIX's look second rate and not worthy of the number one market.

  40. A programing shake up at MSNBC: Weekday changes: José is leaving 10AM and moving to 11AM, Chris expands to 2 hours, Katy moves to 3PM and Hallie leaves to focus on NBC News Now, the open 10AM hour is expected to be given to Ana Cabrera who is joining MSNBC. 10AM: MSNBC Reports (rotating anchor) 11AM: José Díaz-Balart Reports 12N: Andrea Mitchell Reports 1PM: Chris Jansing Reports 3PM: Katy Tur Reports Weekday changes begin Monday, February 13. Weekends are also getting a shake up: Live programs now being a hour later with Katy Phang at 8AM (moving from the 7AM hour), Johnathan now gets both days but only 1 hour, and Ali moves to a new spot. 8AM: Katy Phang 9AM: Johnathan Capeheart 10AM: Ali Velshi Weekend changes begin Saturday, February 18. I’m happy to see consolidation of dayside hours but unclear as to why Andrea still has an hour, could’ve really cut costs by going to three 2 hours shows with 1 anchor. Weekends now have even less news, I’m hoping they put Saturday/Sunday Today at 7AM, to at least have an offering.
