When Tribune acquired them they were a #5 CW affiliate and they switched to CBS, so it's allowed to stand with no issue. Most of the Big Four combos were allowed when the Fox affiliate had a sudden bad month against the WB because the FCC uses Nielsen market rank at the time of proposal to determine if a non-failed station waiver merger could go further or not; remember the attempted WTVJ sale to Post-Newsweek that didn't go through because Uni and Telemundo ranked higher than them before it died due to inaction.

It's even weirder for WTVJ because it's own sister station, Telemundo O&O WSCV, was ranked higher then the NBC station.

Also, it was 2002 when Tribune acquired WTTV from Sinclair, so Channel 4 was still a WB affiliate.

CBS and Nexstar have renewed their affiliate agreement, and additionally WBFS and WKBD are joining/rejoining The CW beginning 9/1

Well crud. That means that things may stay status quo in Mobile/Pensacola.  WKRG (and the other CBS affiliates in SEC country) may have a bad year.

And NBC is likely stuck on WPMI for a few more years....if Sinclair renews.

So Nexstar collected $10.5 million in retransmission fees illegally by not telling DirecTV that WHAG/WDVM was losing NBC:

I'm more shocked that $10.5 million came out of WDVM? Or am I misinterpreting and it's $10.5M from all Nexstar NBC affiliates of which WDVM was (not) one?

Hagerstown is in the Washington, DC market, so DirecTV carried the station throughout the spot beam, essentially serving as an alternate for WRC.

It is even more complicated than that. DirecTV agreed to pay Nexstar a fee even though they were not retransmitting what was then NBC affiliate WHAG starting in 2015. The $10.5 million is what DirecTV paid to not carry that station from when it lost NBC on July 1, 2016, to November 2018, when DirecTV learned it was no longer an NBC affiliate.

Because I am a nerd... all the filings in the case are here.

How were they able to hide that from DirecTV for two and a half years? Did they just send a dummy WHAG feed with NBC programming still on it from master control for their eyes only, or was DirecTV just that in the dark; you'd think engineering or an angry call center viewer from the area would've told them 'yeah, they aren't carrying NBC any longer we might need to check into this'.

DirecTV wasn't carrying WHAG. However, when they entered this retransmission agreement in 2015, DirecTV agreed to pay Nexstar what they called an unlaunched station fee until that station was added to DirecTV (page 13 of the linked agreement), which my read between the lines is that compensation was comparable to what they'd pay for a big-4 affiliate in the Washington DC market. DirecTV argued Nexstar knew WHAG was losing NBC at the time this agreement was made and deliberately didn't tell them about the upcoming change during negotiations, and also didn't tell them during the course of the agreement even when other stations had programming changes.

Nexstar argued the unlaunched station fee wasn't contingent on the NBC programming on the former WHAG, now WDVM. DirecTV believed otherwise hence the lawsuit.

According to Wikipedia,  WDVM wasn't added to DirecTV until 2020, which is past the expiration of this agreement.

I know this clip is a montage that mainly doesn't have to do with Nexstar but there's one clip on here that makes news and goes on this thread... Me-TV will be the network WTHI will carry on 10.3 as they lose The CW to WTWO 2.2. The promo is at 6:56.

KTXL Sacramento is going the opposite direction in terms of the morning... they're starting earlier to 4:00am. Meanwhile, Studio 40 Live moves to 10:00am and the midday news shrinks to a half-hour.

WKBN and WYTV have been doing them for the past several years.

Since newspapers are on the verge of extinction (and Youngstown's Vindicator is a zombie newspaper operated out of Warren) TV and web (funeral homes and legacy.com) are the main source now.

Nexstar is purchasing WBNX from Ernest Angley, forming a duopoly with WJW.

They will reaffiliate with The CW on Sept. 1, 2025.

There go the days of their fall schedule being released in May or June ahead of time. 😟

Who's going to be the first to show the fall schedule now even know I didn't live close to Cleveland I always liked what WBNX was going to show in syndication. Isn't Nexstar in The FCC doghouse with WPIX, WADL with Mission.

I've always figured that WBNX was going to be someone's duopoly partner in Northeast Ohio, it was just a matter of time.

Damn, even I was shocked that this finally happened.

I think Ernest Angley's church has mostly moved to YouTube and the internet, since any of their shows haven't aired in quite a while on WBNX.

I don't think it will be much of a loss of employees for WBNX since they likely all work...er...volunteer their lives towards their lord and savior. (Lord Ernest P. Winston Angley....hopefully feeling the effects of the rapture he preached to his followers)

It will likely shake up the market programming-wise since WBNX has been the dumping ground for anything syndicated, especially if Nexstar passes on anything.  WUAB will probably go back to being an independent (or MNTV), and this could be leading up to them ever getting the Cavs or Guardians rights from Bally...er...whatever that dumpster fire RSN is called these days (FanDuel?)

Already decided.

WUAB next fall will be part RESN and part MyNetworkTV.

With WJW's ownership, does acquiring WBNX now give them the UHF discount in Cleveland?

They've been trying to move WJW back to UHF going back to LocalTV....I could see this as a move to increase cap space if it prevails....

Weigel will probably take back their subchannels, and what's left could all end up on WBNX's frequency.  The Sinclair diginets will probably get sent packing as well.
