Remembee that the Big Three went all-in on overnight news in the wake of the Gulf War and the endless hourly updates we got. NBC long ago got rid of Nightside, but that was for a different reason, of course.

 

Several years ago, CBS ended Up to the Minute and replaced it with CBS Overnight News, which is just a repurposed edit of previous night's Evening News. Makes better financial sense, I guess.

 

But really, the need for live news in that hour isn't worth the expense. Combined with all the other factors, I'm still surprised ABC hasn't canceled WNN yet.

Agreed. The CBS Overnight News method makes way more sense than World News Now.

The move is happening unless Disney suddenly decides to talk a large loss on dumping a state-of-the-art studio facility they've been planning for over a decade, no matter the feelings of an EP or booker who just needs to adjust to a new commute and a shiny new studio and stop yapping misinformation about how mean Ginger was to her terrible co-worker to the Post.

It’s a sign of the times really. GMA stopped regular doing outdoor segments a long time ago and even the crowds outside of Today’s studio 1A are a quarter of what they used to be most days. At one point NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN and Fox had their respective morning programs broadcasting from a street side studio. That’s pretty much dwindled down to just one that actually leverages windows as part of the presentation today.

Indeed. I was thinking about the GMA setup and how it could effectively be any studio anywhere. Heck, it could be a much more spacious and modern studio somewhere and that would (will?) be better for the production than needing to sit in Times Square just because. (Or Rockefeller, or wherever, not to make it only about ABC and GMA). Streetside is all well and good, but not make or break.

And most of it really is security concerns because there's a certain contingent of people who would love to go on TV and suck up a week of airtime for calling something 'fake news' or attacking someone on-camera. Post 1-6, along with the morning after morning headache of security costs, it just makes more sense to just bring everything inside.

 

Of course, CBS never justified needing 1515 at all except for the Redstone ego to get use out of a space no longer used by their dying brands (Moonves would have never agreed to a move like that), while over time GMA just got sick of the headaches that are Times Square knockoff characters and other things that make a live broadcast with an audience outside just hard to manage. And Fox is pretty well-self explanatory. Comcast has an outright lease on 30 Rock so it's private property to do what they need to for crowd control.

Yes, that program has been around for 32 years, but considering the time the program is on (overnights or as WNN likes to call them, insomniacs), its always a revolting turnover in terms of anchors, and pairings never-ever last long. Some last a few months, others a year and a few months, but the former pair and the current one are the only ones that have ever lasted the past two years with Andrew and Rhiannon possibly making history next month during the holidays.

 

Weird research? Yes. Somewhat irrelevant? Yes. Interesting nonetheless? Oh absolutely. But I just wanted to offer my thoughts on something I've noticed.

 

UPDATE

 

I checked this morning's program of GMA First Look (via ABC News Live) and both Andrew and Rhiannon are still there. So, after two years and three months, they became the longest-running duo in the history of the program.

 

It seems like they both aren't going away anytime soon... and don't need to since CBS has been all over the place with their overnight programs since the end of Up To The Minute.

It's always interesting to see how networks function on low staffing days. GMA, Today, and CMs are typically pre-recorded on Christmas and New Year's. As such none of the primary anchors were live in the building this morning. 

 

*Morgan Norwood and Aaron Katerski anchored coverage as a special report this morning for the New Orleans terror attack. 

 

It was also pretty cool to see them take a mid-market local affiliate reporter on the ground versus their own network talent. 

 

Hopefully this terrible event is not an indication of how the rest of 2025 is going to go.

Nice to see that ABC finally cut in. Woke up (About 8am Central), saw the news, CBS and NBC were both well into Special Report mode. ABC came back from commercial with the GMA staff, "Portions Recorded" showing in the top left corner of the screen and Stephanopoulos openly stating that the show was pre-recorded.

The ball dropped on ABC at midnight- didn't know that was the visual representation on how they were going to operate in 2025.

It really doesn't help that both WGNO remains merely existent in their market and Nexstar/NewsNation forcing them to focus there more just complicates things. NBC, CBS and Fox have always-on stations ready to go while ABC had so many balls in the air beyond affiliate issues (losing the NOLA segment of NYRE several years back thanks to local politics and managing their relationship with the Sugar Bowl folks).

Fair point- and probably a factor to some degree. Which means ABC (and others) should keep that in mind when it comes to affiliate renewals- Provideth for the Network as the Network provideth onto you (11th commandment?)

Wait what, sorry for thinking off topic a bit, but how did New Years' Rockin eve lost the NOLA segment in terms of local politics and what is the association with the sugar bowl? Curious as I was watching the show in pockets the other night (there was PR + Vegas in its place with Times Sq. of course)

It all stems from a dispute between the tourism committee and the mayor, mainly over the 2020 Lauren Daigle fiasco and COVID.

ABC was on the air with a special report from 7:30am ET until 9:06am ET. Affiliates then had the option to take ABC News Live until the network came back on the air at 10am ET.

I noticed GMA started using a new announcer sound bite for it's opening

"Live from Times Square, it's Tuesday, Good Morning America"

They started using it on Monday
