Comcast is spinning off its cable networks into a new and separate company.  Interestingly, Comcast will retain NBC and NBC News but intends to spin off MSNBC as part of the new and separate entity.  It is unclear what implications this will have for MSNBC but may included loss of shared newsgathering and talent with NBC as well as a rebrand.

Variety reports that MSNBC could undergo a name change and several programming changes in light of the NBCU cable spinoff.

This was interesting:

”He also suggested the company might look to such entities such as a TV-station group or a sports operation as potential acquisition targets, these people said.”

LET THE MINDLESS SPECULATION BEGIN! (Is there still a separate board for this?)

All speculation for now.  I would expect at some point in the future, both MSNBC and CNBC changes names, since both have NBC in them.

I'd think that that would severely impact brand recognition. This is good for NBC News as it no longer has a left-biased news network attached to its brand while operating as a "neutral" news network.

Could there possibly be a plan afoot to create a larger worldwide news organization by combining other Comcast news assets - which are also losing money - with MSNBC / CNBC into a single, streamlined news organization under their "Sky News" brand?

Apparently, the Comcast acquisition of Sky only requires keeping Sky News in existence until 2028 - this could be an attempt to not only protect Comcast NBC but to help rescue Sky News UK / TG24 Italia simultaneously,

But what do you about the channel still owned by News Corp in Australia? Unless you toss a lot of money at Rupert to buy the Sky branding outright, that's still a fly in the ointment.

Interesting thought. I'm not sure how much worldwide audiences know that Australian Sky News is right wing propaganda.  I wonder if Comcast fears branding everything under Sky News would give consumers guilt by association.

Rupert doesn't own the Sky News branding, they are licensing the brand from Comcast. It's actually been reported that News Corp in Australia will lose access to the Sky News branding when the agreement expires in 2026. Here is an article below:

Sky News Australia may be forced to rebrand, Fox News Australia among the names in the mix

It's an interesting thought, but if that is that plan, I think they would have said as much. CNBC has already been moved under Lazarus' purview with the future of MSNBC still very much unknown.

"KC Sullivan, the president of CNBC, wrote in a memo to employees that they will begin reporting to Lazarus immediately, with plans for him to address staffers Thursday." - Deadline

As I asked in the other post for election coverage,

Why doesn't MSNBC just focus on reporting on the actual news of the day, with indepth coverage of breaking news during evening hours, instead of just focusing on politics?  The channel can put political opinionated programs,  but I feel like they put way too much on the air.  I try not to watch the news channels because they're too focused on these types of programs,  but when I watch, I turn to msnbc, mainly because I watch NBC for regular news.

The main issue with NBC and the other networks are that they don't  provide additional reporting & coverage of important events of the day.  It's only half an hour in the evening for the major news headlines of the entire country and maybe additional coverage in the morning.  That' is why I hope msnbc & cnn would be an an outlet to provide that coverage.  Fox News probably won't because what they're doing is not news, just viewpoints from certain personalities.

While you & me would like a news heavy channel, it seems like every network thinks most Americans wont. CNN & NewsNation are both in a better position to focus more on other news, and they are still spending a lot of time focusing on politics, and when they aren't focusing on politics, the focus seems to be on more sensational stories designed more to entertain than inform. It appears NewsNation likes to focus on true crime & UFO's when they aren't covering politics. In the past CNN focused on things like missing planes & aired reality style programming in primetime. The streaming news channels are not much better. There seems to be a theory that most Americans don't care about news from other parts of the country unless it's something sensational. The only stories from different parts of the country that get wide coverage are things like mass shootings or major storms. International coverage is even worse. Unless it's something like a war or terror attack, most international news is ignored. National newscasts in Australia & Canada do a much better job at covering international news than any of the major network newscasts, and they do so with far fewer resources.

I think political news will increase for everyone in 2025, and with NBC News splitting from MSNBC, the channel formally known as MSNBC will have every reason to focus more on politics.

I vaguely remember the trouble Aj Jazeera had getting cable companies to carry Al Jazeera America. Besides the obvious biases because Al Jazeera is based in a majority-Muslim Middle Eastern country, there were apparently a lot of cable companies that insisted that AJAM carry more US-centric news.

If that becomes the case, they'll have to rename Sky News Weather and Sky News Extra (currently Sky News Election) too.

Logically speaking, if the spun-off NBCU properties are gonna be under a separate entity, going with Sky Networks as a name makes sense (Sky News America, Sky Business, etc.).

Sorry, that makes no sense.  They would have to license the name from Comcast which owns Sky. Sky isn’t part of the announcement. Just the US cable properties are being spun off as a separate company.  They will probably license MSNBC and CNBC names for a portion of time.

MSNBC & NBC News unveiled an updated studio 4E last night, it appears Ari Melber was the first to use it. The former set had 2 video walls meeting at a 90 degree corner and a moveable show/network vertical branding banner. Now the space has been updated with a curved video wall that runs along the entire space, a new dark wood geometrical design piece that incorporates the NBC peacock and a color changing peacock motif display near the glass doors, they also replicated the desk MSNBC uses in studio 3A just with different finishes. Overall a huge improvement, it’s been really interesting how that small space has evolved since its introduction in 2016. Only caps I have as of now.

They actually debuted it weeks ago - right after the election. NBC expanded this space and used it for their election night coverage - that’s where the curved video wall came from (but they used it with AR to make it look taller).

Ana Cabrera and Katy Tur use it most days for their respective reports shows.

Thanks for the additional information! I rarely see dayside, looks like a great space for MSNBC Reports.
