No one over 65 and certainly none over 70 should be included, in my opinion. That takes Koppel, Stahl, Pauley and King off the list. Same for James Brown and Anthony Mason, both of whom were mentioned in an earlier post. I understand the logic for a permanent younger anchor so that they last long-term. But, if somebody is only filling in once, there's no harm in letting the veterans take a stab at it. And veteran subs won't necessarily be a test run for the main anchor chair, it's just giving the audience some well-known faces in the interim. And I just want to see them do it lol. Action Newsroom 1263
The Evening News is getting an overhaul - with a move back to the Broadcast Center, an anchor duo of John Dickerson and WCBS' Maurice DuBuois (alongside Face the Nation's Margaret Brennan and WCBS' Lonnie Quinn), a new production leadership and an infusion of the production style and content of 60 Minutes. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/new-cbs-evening-news-anchors-john-dickerson-maurice-dubois-1235963606/ https://deadline.com/2024/08/cbs-evening-news-anchors-john-dickerson-maurice-dubois-1236028559/ Edited August 1, 2024 by Action Newsroom 3 1 Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/14533-cbs-evening-news/page/36/#findComment-299160 Share on other sites

Dickerson must have some dirt on people because this would be his 4th show (Face The Nation, CBS This Morning, the CBS News 24/7 show and now CBSEN), if I'm not mistaken. Not sure having two males (instead of a male/female duo) front CBSEN is the way to go. They have plenty of capable female anchors/correspondents to choose from. What message does this send to your female employees (and viewers) by not promoting a women? Best of luck to them because I can't see this working out well... I don't think sexism has any basis here. Very few news anchor teams are dual male anymore in this country. On two stints CBS had failed solo female anchors (Couric, O'Donnell), so we can't say they didnt try. Not to mention Gayle King, Jane Pauley and Margaret Brennan in leading anchor roles. At this point it's cool to see two males behind the anchor desk because it's so foreign. I think this instance is less about representation and more about who can carry the broadcast. Not suggesting sexism is at play here, but rather the optics don't look good when you demote your lead female anchor for two male anchors without giving another female anchor an opportunity to tryout. It would be a different story if they went with a solo anchor. I, and I assume others, see value in having both a male/female perspective when it comes to certain duos. Just because Couric and O'Donnell didn't work shouldn't mean you give up. CBS also had Connie Chung as the first Asian-American to co-anchor the Evening News and she didn't stick around too long either. Let's see what this looks like when it airs. 1 2 Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/14533-cbs-evening-news/page/36/#findComment-299171 Share on other sites
LiveFromHere 1
This is doing news on the cheap, circa 2024. Asking existing talent to double up, triple up on their duties. Will their contracts be adjusted accordingly for the added workloads? Notice there are no outside hires, no poaching another anchor for millions. This may all be a placeholder anyway. The network’s news division in its current form is probably in doubt post Paramount sale to Skydance. 1 1 Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/14533-cbs-evening-news/page/36/#findComment-299173 Share on other sites

G2000 30
We’ll see how this works. There already is a nightly newscast with long-form reporting called the PBS Newshour and adding 60 minutes like elements sounds a little like PBS to me but in a half hour format. Breaking news and traveling for national stories might limit his WCBS position unless they have Dickerson handling that. Then again...in the 60s, as mentioned before, CBS anchors also carried national duties. On NBC in the 90s, Matt Lauer and Al Roker held positions on Today and WNBC's Live at 5 simultaneously. Double duty is possible, the exception is Lauer & Roker weren't NBC's main anchors. 50 minutes ago, G2000 said: We’ll see how this works. In all fairness WNT, NNN, and CBSEN are nearly identical so taking a page from PBS shouldn't be too awful. Well its funny to say all 4 are keeping the jobs they have also, so that question can also go for Dickerson too. He keeping his streaming newscast also. My bet he retains the 11pm show and eventually maybe he'll stop doing WCBS all together becasue eventually they'll pay him more money. Al Roker did the same when he got Today he was still doing live at 5 and eventually in 2000 he stopped and went to network full time. 1 Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/14533-cbs-evening-news/page/36/#findComment-299184 Share on other sites

JosiahCubed 280
Just reading up on it, and it feels like CBS is trying to do what the CBC did with The National back in the fall of 2017 after Peter Mansbridge retired that summer (minus the 4 person rotation of anchors). Newzgods 0
I agree with the earlier post. CBS News is in flux right now with the Skydance merger most likely happening. Wendy Mcmahon is just shuffling the chairs on the Titanic no doubt once the merger happens CBS and CBS News and CBS stations. Will all see leadership changes. Vidifont 50
Just saw that Katie Couric is calling out CBS for the forthcoming changes to the CBS Evening News. First off, she was the one who walked away from CBS. She's something else. Norah stepping away is the best decision for the Evening News. I see this as a great opportunity to get the place back on track. That broadcast has been in third place forever, something had to change. Moving to Washington was also not the answer. That was done for Norah to be close to her family. Not a good reason to move an entire broadcast to another city. John and Maurice will do fine. This is a business first and foremost. Not sexism, just plain business. Too much money was spent on the wrong things in the past. Those days are over. Using their own people at their O&Os is the best way to start covering the news of the day. 1 1 1 Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/14533-cbs-evening-news/page/36/#findComment-299459 Share on other sites

Not to be political, but Katie habitually inserts sexism and feminism into many issues. Of the 3 evening programs CBSEN has most frequently had women as an anchor of the weekday broadcast (herself, Chung, and O'Donnell). Even in her book, Katie blamed her failure at the evening news on sexism rather than her softening the tone of the broadcast and adding editorials. Comparatively I dont recall that much criticism of Diane Sawyer's tenure on WNT. This isn't an issue of representation. Women may not be the anchors in the evening but they are elsewhere. Face the Nation, CBS Mornings and CBS Sunday Morning are all lead by female anchors. The Today Show has dual female anchors, Robin Roberts is basically the face of GMA, Savannah dual anchors a lot of NBC's breaking coverage. Not to mention female majority anchor teams on local stations across the country. MorningNews 1437
I don’t quite remember Katie walking away as much as CBS moving in a different direction, similar to what is happening now and has happened the last 5 or so anchors. Not disputing that sexism is rampant across media industries but I don’t think it’s had much to do with failure of the Evening News and particularly Norah. She’s just bad. 4 Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/14533-cbs-evening-news/page/36/#findComment-299482 Share on other sites

Katie (Katherine then) was the Pentagon correspondent for NBC and was co-anchor of the much more buttoned up Sunday Today program. She also commanded hours of NBC’s coverage during Columbine, 9/11, London subway bombings, Hurricane Katrina, etc. She also held an impromptu interview with Bush senior that was well regarded. CBSEN didn’t work out for her but she has the chops for serious news. Statements like this might give her comments on sexism a bit of credence. In my opinion, David Muir is one of the worst anchors to grace any of the evening newscasts but you seldom hear criticism that he’s better suited for GMA, which he arguably was when Diane retired. 2 3 Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/14533-cbs-evening-news/page/36/#findComment-299584 Share on other sites
