So, Tom Llamas took the reign of NBC Nightly News replacing Lester Holt beginning on June 2, 2025. What do you think of him?

If only there was an ongoing discussion about tha- oh, wait!

I just noticed that NBC is now using a side-by-side style bumper for their Nightly News commercial breaks with a 'Headlines Now' slide on the right. When did they start using this? I'm assuming it debuted on a Monday if I were to guess.

It's been a while since I watched network news.

I saw it Monday as well... Didn't say anything since I was on the road the previous week and not watching TV- Didn't want to be lambasted for noticing something late that was new to me!

NN is also getting more... casual(?) with the camera angles combing back from break later in the show.

So he was a dumb frat guy in college. it's allowed.

I said the same thing, I also think there another reason why there digging all this up against him I think it has to do with the history making achievement of his role but I digress.

It’s also the Post. That bastion of respected journalism.

they aren't digging, NBC staffers are leaking because they didn't want Tom taking over, as if they should be allowed any say.

As far back as his WTVJ days Tom had reputation for not putting up with lazy, mediocre people who phone it in. In those days, some these people would come to me at sfltv with "tips" to try and damage him by giving me "tips". So the story from college was known to me, which means it was known for a long, long time to people he worked with. As these "tipsters" came to me sometimes I'd ask the late WTVJ anchor Joel Connable about it and he told me, multiple times, Tom is ambitious, great reporter, who works hard and wants to earn his way up but he has no tolerance for mediocrity or behind the camera politics, so some of these people would tie themselves up into a knot if Tom dared to criticise.

It was bad enough at times that Joel told me multiple times, unprompted, he'd had to step in and defend Tom from some of these scrags trying to undermine him with station management, sometimes inventing stories about Tom what he said or did, that never happened. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the same people are involved now.

If my database on sfltv.com hasn't eaten the comments, there was a back and forth in the comments of one post between WTVJ staffers regarding Tom and since I didn't censor people, names were dropped about the situation.

NBC Nightly News reporter Rehema Ellis is retiring. Realizing how long she was at the network, I had a feeling this move was coming soon. I love her deep warm reporting voice. Excellent story teller.

Looks like Tom Llamas had a busy day. He reported from the celebrations against Maduro in Doral, FL and apparently he's in Studio 1A for Nightly News.

***EDIT: Tom is in Miami

No, he is in Miami anchoring tonight. Since Miami isn’t really used that much, they probably don’t have a small set at the ready like LA.

Ahh. I suspected that it could be a video wall/green screen mimicking studio 1A.

I didn't catch the beginning of the broadcast, so I waited until the end of the show to see if he would say "from Miami". I didn't hear it so I thought it was New York.

I presume this is the NBC 6 building in Miramar?

Because of the gravitas of the news yesterday, they probably decided not to use the Studio 1A mimicked  background that Jose Diaz -Balart uses most weeks. That is also broadcast from the Telemundo studios near Miami.

The New York Post and NBCUniversal themselves are reporting that “NBC Nightly News” notched a rare ratings win over longtime rival “ABC World News Tonight” in the prized 25-54 demographic last week — as “CBS Evening News” fell further behind with new anchor Tony Dokoupil at the helm. This marked its first weekly win in this key demographic in six years, attracting an average of 992,000 viewers aged 25-54 in the first week of this year between January 5-11, slightly surpassing ABC’s 989,000 viewers according to Nielsen. A lot of viewers are fatigued from Muir’s in-your-face approach and the propagandist news vision that Dokoupil has to endure. Llamas is straight to the point with the headlines and hones in on those daily issues that people in and out of that 25-54 group can relate to.

It will be interesting to see over the next several months which network former CBS News viewers will defect to. I guess this is the first sign.

I can agree with that, though I wish all networks would drop the BREAKING NEWS tag for mostly every story that they showcase... when it clearly isn't.

ABC will always be number 1 NBC notches the demo every now and then, it’s happens for time to time and is usual. David Muir has this anchorman aura that Tom doesn’t not saying Tom can get it but don’t hold your breath that NBC will overtake ABC.

Loved that Nightly News supported their colleague Savannah with the majority of the A block devoted to her mom's disappearance. Tom sounded understandably emotional throughout the stories about Nancy Guthrie's disappearance.

Tonight, David Muir led with the disappearance instead of NBC, as Tom had an interview with the president.

NEW: NBC Nightly News debuted a new (to them) studio tonight. The broadcast now uses Studio 3A, the former home to MSNBC (now MS Now). It comes after months of work and small changes in the space.

Tom uses the desk that originally debuted in 2017, but has since seen updates to its finishings.

The show also has new monitor graphics, but kept its old open and supers.
