Is there a reason why the noon news is typically the first to get new graphics and not the morning news?  It makes no sense to me.

 

Otherwise, I like the refresh.  More importantly, they got rid of that very annoying "da-duh-DUH-duh" sound they would play whenever the "Next 7 Days" weather graphic appeared.  It was annoying as fuck and not very hospitable to some neuro-divergent viewers.

Noon is typically a low-viewership period, so it's a good time to debut and work out the kinks before the big shows at 5, 6 and 11/10pm.

All the 9-to-5 employees are in the building at midday, too. Why pay overtime to all the techs and such to keep them late or bring them in at 4am?

That's actually a good idea - do a test run on a newscast less likely to be seen in case there's a glitch, so the ones with more viewers are less likely to see technical difficulties.

 

Conversely, all of the NFL's broadcasters choose to debut new graphics during a Super Bowl, which in my opinion, is really stupid.  If something goes wrong, everyone sees it and the broadcaster becomes laughingstock.  Also, why debut new graphics at the END of a season rather than at the beginning?

I wish someone can post screenshots of the differences between the packages on WBBH/WZVN and the one WCVB debuted today (outside of the L3's and time/temp bug).

 

I'm curious what makes WCVB's version the one that everyone else will use but WBBH/WZVN's version will stay within them.

The biggest difference by far is WCVB kept the diagrid "slants" in the graphics. WBBH/WZVN's are def boxier with elements of diagrid. Even the animated backgrounds are different -- looks like WBBH/WZVN kept the current animated backgrounds with the bluey/yellows, and WCVB is more modern  with the "stripey" things on the left side there... With that being said and from what I can see, WCVB's is by far more easier to read and easier on the eyes IMO...

It won’t surprise me if WMUR also gets the boxier looking graphics when they switch over.

One thing that does kinda bother me just a little is the size of the weather icons... When it's just the sun icon, it gives me the feeling it's going to be a blazing "desert-like" sun... They could scale them down just a smidge...

It's not the size, but the brightness. WBBH was able to compensate, but it looks more like a moon than a sun, so they just need to find a proper icon.

I'm wondering how long this will get rolled out to the other Hearst stations.  With the last update (diagrid v2), all stations switched to the refreshed graphics 2018, albeit in phases.  WESH debuted the new look in January of that year; and it was subsequently rolled out to the remaining NBC stations in February, KCCI & WLKY in March, and finally the ABC stations in April.

In an interesting turn of events, WMUR has gotten the new graphics; and has switched over from Hearst Classic to Strive for music as well.

Per the met at WESH-TV in Orlando who's been working on them, they will roll out in the next few weeks to most if not all stations. Probably in time for sweeps maybe

WCVB was the first station to receive the new graphics, then followed by Gulf Coast News.  So will WESH be the next station to receive the update, and then the rest of the Hearst group?
