Subbing for Emily West, who is in while Adelle Caballero is on maternity leave.

Never understood how they put a meteorologist in as the traffic person, or whether the person cares and gets upset about it. At least they don't pull in a reporter like they often do at WPIX (except when Star Harvey does it) and used to do at WCBS (before they got rid of their in-person traffic person entirely). Maybe they get paid extra for doing it?

Many years ago, traffic services like Shadow Traffic actually did the reports from their own offices.  If the regular person was out, a different Shadow Traffic person would sub.  They sat in a cube with WNBC 4 logos etc.  Stations now employ their own, and just receive data from whoever provides those services these days.  This week clearly became an unusual situation, with Adelle on family leave and Emily taking the week off (probably a pre-planned vacation or whatever).  Raphael is a known face to viewers and may have been asked to sub or he volunteered.  That's all internal to WNBC.  Whether he gets additional compensation that is part of his contract.  It  is good they did not go the "let the anchor read it approach" or worse, just include the data in the ticker.  Especially on a day like today.

Why? What did he add to the prepared script over just having an anchor read it?

WNBC is the only one of the O&O not to bring in their weekday anchors for the 11pm newscast on Sunday to cover the Biden news.

In other interesting (or unusual) news, Dave Price is doing Sports Final at midnight.

On the latter point, not surprised considering the Olympics are starting up this week, I'm sure Bruce Beck & other sports anchors & other personnel at the NBC O&Os & stations lucky enough to report on the games are already or are enroute to Paris. I've seen on social media WFAN's Keith McPherson also doing sports for WNBC, don't be surprised if he pops up during the next few weeks.

Have you noticed that WNBC is reverting their current slogan back to the original slogan "We're for New York" as seen in a new promo? Exactly 8 years since they use that slogan, which is combining it with the word "Together" to form "Together, Were for New York" since August 2016.

Nice, it would be cool if they brought back the jingle in a non-corny way.

Would also be cool if the New York type face below the 4 was cursive again

They teased it at 6:23, he made the announcement right after sports and before the handoff to NNN in 1A.  Handled with class, and just wanted to say Thank You to viewers for now.  More testimonials and goodbyes to come.  The end of an era.

Here is the article from their website including the NBC press release.  He will continue to contribute to special projects and events.

I've always thought he would make it to 50 years and then retire, even if it's semi-retirement.

Anyways, this is, in my question, without a shadow of a doubt, THE greatest NYC local news anchor who's ever lived.

In a town full of legends and icons, IMO because of the run he's had, Chuck stands alone.

December 12th will be a sad day in NYC and in this country in the world of broadcasting as a result of his departure. I'll make sure I'll be watching.

An end of an era. We all knew it would come one day, but wow.

I don't think this is as surprising as many of you would think.  NBC has made clear that it is cutting costs.  That includes salaries of its top-earning anchors.  Chuck is a man with a seven-figure salary (as of 2011, it was estimated that he made $1 million per year, and that price has no doubt risen in the subsequent 13 years) that I'm sure NBC would like to not pay.  I believe Chuck's decision to retire is his own, but even he surely saw the writing on the wall and figured it was time to get out while the getting was good.

Not even veteran local news anchors like Chuck Scarborough are immune to the realities of the TV news business.

Congratulations to Chuck! I know I’ve mentioned this before, but I feel like he should’ve did this a few years ago. He’s not the same anchor that he was 10 years ago.

Would love to see Sue come back to co-anchor his last newscast.

I assume David will be named co-anchor, putting him and Natalie at 4pm, 6pm, 7pm, and 11pm, while keeping Adam and Gilma at 11am and 5pm. But I wonder if it makes sense to put Adam and Gilma at 11 AM, 4 PM, and 6 PM, With David and Natalie at 5 PM, 7 PM, at 11 PM, making their on air time more even.

Yup just watched him make his announcement. Last newscast is December 12th

Nooo. Did Chuck break the world record yet? I'm not ready for him to go but it's understandable. He's been there 50 years. I hope he wasn't pushed out due to money.

Yes, Please let Sue anchor with him on his last day.

Chuck did not break the Guinness World Record.  Former WHAM (Rochester, NY) anchor Don Alhart still holds that record.

Agreed, but assuming Adam and Gilma work a 10-6 shift, that wouldn't work. (Unless like some jobs their shift is 8.5 hours to account for break).

David's profile has really risen this late into his career at WNBC!

We're loosing Chuck, we're going to loose Bill Ritter and we've lost Dana Tyler. Hang in there Kaity Tong & Rosanna Scotto!

Charles Scarborough was the last anchorperson on NYC TV to have been on the air in this market, at that position, prior to 1980.

As far as on-air personnel in any station going back to the decade of the '70s, it looks like it'll be down to just Marvin Scott (WNEW-TV, WPIX) and Irv "Mr. G" Gikovsky (WCBS-TV, WPIX).

Come Dec. 13, Kaity Tong (WABC-TV, WPIX) will be the city's longest-tenured news anchor (43 years and counting). Rosanna Scotto (WNYW) is next on the longevity list.
