On days with more breaking news, WCBS has opted for a 2 anchor format at noon (Jessica Moore anchored with Cindy the day of the CEO murder, and Doug Williams joined her today).

I’ve noticed this, too. How bizarre. Cindy has anchored at WCBS for more than 30 years and can more than hold her own during breaking news.  Either give her a permanent co-anchor or leave her solo at all times, including during breaking news.  I could understand bringing in a co-anchor if coverage is expected go for over an hour, otherwise it feels weird.

Separately, we are getting closer to Maurice taking over the Evening News and I haven’t seen any announcement regarding his successor at WCBS. I assume Allen Devlin was hired to take this role, but interestingly enough, he has only filled in some of the time, with Dick Brennan still filling in quite often. I would have expected Devlin to be at the desk as often as possible on the lead up to Maurice’s departure from WCBS.

I don’t think he departing from WCBS he just leaving a few newscasts. I think he’ll remain at 11pm.

If we believe a recent Newsday article (paywalled, https://www.newsday.com/entertainment/tv/maurice-dubois-wcbs-evening-news-ddsu762j)

this is what was written:

Quote

Ch. 2 had initially hoped to keep him as anchor for the 11 p.m., but DuBois now says doing both would be "physically impossible."

So he will likely remain a "contributor" at channel 2 but not an anchor anymore. If the rumor about moving towards solo anchors is true, there will be no need for a replacement at 11pm (and possibly 6pm).

Well then it’s a clear promotion for him, I’m happy for him. He deserves it. Let’s just hope he stays for a long time obviously they flashed him a lot of money.

Craig Allen is back and doing the evening weather forecast. Will Elliot be back for weekday mornings?

Today's staffing is going to be different (on every channel), like all other years due to the holiday and allowing many anchors and staff to be home with their families.  I would not use today as a reason to question about regular assignments.

Craig Allen was back filling in for Lonnie tonight. I also thought it was interesting that there is a job opening for "weekday meteorologist". This makes me think that someone may be leaving? Lonnie may also be reducing his schedule with the added Evening News duties.

CBS New York is seeking a dynamic, passionate, and experienced meteorologist to join our First Alert Weather team. This high-profile role requires a skilled storyteller who presents an authoritative, engaging forecast that is clear and relatable.
This role demands a meteorologist who thrives on severe weather coverage, both in studio and reporting live in extreme conditions.
In addition to forecasting for CBS New York on weekdays, this meteorologist will occasionally be called upon to provide weather coverage for CBS network programs, including the CBS Evening News.

For those concerned about John Elliott going away, by the sounds of this article sounds like he is staying put and taking on CBS Mornings Saturday duties.

Following up on this, today Chris Wragge joined Cindy due to the Trump sentencing. I suppose I understand why WCBS is doing this, but I totally agree it seems bizarre to do this during 'bigger stories' (and not necessarily during wall to wall breaking news where 2 anchors helps).

They switched to the new weather banners as of noon today.

They also started using a new bug during wildfire coverage, giving viewers a QR code to make it easy to donate through the Red Cross. ,The way it slides on is elegant. Interestingly, it uses the CBS 2 logo instead of the CBS News New York one. I know it may be due to space reasons but it's still interesting because we've been led to believe the CBS 2 mark is being phased out.

We are just days before the transition of Maurice from WCBS to CBS Evening News, and primarily Dick Brennan has been anchoring with Kristine (today was Jessica Moore). I'd say it is unlikely Allen Devlin will be the new anchor given how little exposure he has had to viewers with Kristine, but we shall see.

I was thinking the same thing. He’s barely anchored I was expecting to see much more of him during the last few weeks. It does seem they’re testing the two pairs you mentioned and nothing is actually set 100% yet. I wonder if they’ll try others as well? I also wonder if Maurice will be on to say goodbye and stuff?

Allen was hired as the main anchor. He is the replacement.

WCBS sure isn't acting like that.  Perhaps viewer feedback was not as positive as they hoped in his test broadcasts.  One would think that with many months since DuBois move was announced, they would have a plan that seamlessly puts in place the new team.

Will they do a farewell to Maurice at WCBS?

I was thinking about that & it'd be the least they can do. Yes, he'll still be around working across the building at CBS News, but it'd be nice for WCBS to recognize him as their main local weeknight anchor for many years, not like the farewell being Maurice like "See ya Monday on the CBS Evening News."  and that's that.

They already did. Maurice, Kristine, Lonnie and Otis sat on the couch reminiscing about the 14 years they spent together between 5:20 and 5:30.  Kristine mentioned Maurice and Lonnie will be on the CBS Evening news. Alice came on after to anchor the next half hour with Kristine on the 5pm news

I sorta saw Maurice departure coming. He was either gonna go to network at some point. As for Lonnie never thought he be part of the package deal but CBS is doing something different by adding a meteorologist to the picture as if there brining morning news to the evening news. It will be interesting. I can see Maurice advancing to solo anchor of the EN if John leaves it. I don’t see him coming back to WCBS after this opportunity.

It was great that they had a formal goodbye and tribute package for Maurice and I thought that was well done. I am a bit surprised by WCBS leaving viewers in the dark about a replacement, but perhaps they are waiting a few weeks out of respect for Maurice?

On a separate note, I don't recall seeing Alice and Kristine anchor together all that often (like the rare combo of Dana and Kristine), so that is another interesting test pairing.

Jessica Moore and Krisitine Johnson are anchoring again tonight. I think they are still testing pairs, but again who knows. Jessica and Dick seem to be the main candidates. If it was definitely Allen Devlin why wouldn't he be on tonight?
