Thanks so they are using a larger screen for weather. Still a squint vs something that takes up the full screen but better.

The walk from the board back to the anchor desk is a great touch and the shot blocking makes things seem larger than life in scale, as good television design should.

The green screen is still in use.

At 4 and 5 only for traffic. The monitor looks great. Back to a mix of green screen and green screen and the much more advanced weather center for the morning show. It’s like a security blanket or something, but whatever. The big board (not to be confused with the retired “Big Board” 😉)  offers a more modern approach, and a good option for the weather anchor to walk back to the desk less awkwardly than with the green screen in the old setup. And the effective impossibility of doing that with the current green screen setup.

They seemed fine using one of the standup areas for traffic and the rear-most touchscreen, so keeping the green screen for that seems…needless, and doesn’t add to the appeal while detracting from having all the personalities able to engage on the set more easily. But again, whatever. They cling to it, they cling to it. It’s all well and good to have tucked away as a backup, but with that much space available, they could

do just fine. 🤷

Just like the last set was a nice evolution from the previous one, this follows suit. Not a radical departure, but a well-done revamp that keeps it fresh and engaging with possibilities for visual variety.

The expanded weather area and multiple screens could be used effectively in a severe weather scenario, a little more cohesively than the last setup. That wasn’t lacking, they just made some nice adjustments.

Onward and upward. Let’s see how they put it to use in time. One or two days in is barely fresh out of the box. There can be more ways to do things to come.

I'm not sure how I feel about it yet.  I think I liked the background image they used previously better.  This one is too... dark blue?  I also don't understand why this was necessary, the other set didn't seem outdated at all?   The different weather views are interesting... but I don't like how in the one shot, you can see the side of a copier and a literal recycling bin in the background!

I don't know how I feel about the contrast on the screens behind them in all situations vs. on screen graphics.  The screens need some fine-tuning, I think.  Maybe the actual contrast itself needs adjusting.

Has Caroline Goggin taken over Sunday mornings from Nydia Han? She’s been on a lot lately in that time slot.

I’ve noticed Nydia is only on M-W on the 10am, even when she might appear on the 4pm on a Thursday. Wonder if it makes sense to take a “View” approach and add Maggie and Caroline as anchors on the show and just rotate which 3 ladies will be on each day.

Lastly, noticed this week that Karen handled weather on the mornings, but Payton handled the 10am’s, and Chris/Brittany handled noon, with Adam and Cecily doing their normal shifts. Seems silly to have 5 of your 6 meteorologists in everyday.

Somewhere I read Caroline is now on Sundays regularly. But with that coming post Sowers’ announcement of leaving, it makes sense they didn’t do a new open for it. Heck, they barely got use out of the Maggie Kent/Chris Sowers one for Saturdays. Oh well, such is life.

I’m sure they know what they’re doing with the weather coverage and have a perfectly good reason. Maybe some of it was while teams were practicing in the new studio setup. Maybe some was Karen just wanting or needing some10 am shifts off. Maybe they’re experimenting for team permutations. As it is, the “normal” schedule for Brittany is Wednesdays through Sundays. If you assume in the interim Payton covers most weekend mornings, that could be a Saturday to Wednesday week, not withstanding moving some things around here and there when needed. Really would only put “everyone” on  once a week, and with vacations and whatnot, rarely even then.

They don’t seem to have an issue going with two of the regular three at 10, and bring in a sub if it’s down to one regular (or none, and thus two subs). Gives them some good flexibility thus far.

He will be missed by many. It was a boneheaded decision…twice…to pass him over for full-time gigs. But good for him for now getting that opportunity, and getting off weekends.

And in the interest of fairness, boneheaded though the decisions have been to not recognize what they had, at least management let him have his goodbyes instead of bum-rushing him out the door.

I’m not suggesting that ABC will mandate sets but I’d love to see something like this for WABC’s new set next spring.

I'd like them to go the KABC route.

Chris Sowers gave a short farewell message at the very end of the noon broadcast Sunday and showed one of his "Down at the Shore" clips.

Looks like a nice sending-off party too on Saturday on his way out. I know he's joining WPTV. However, look at the post... He is heading down to Florida for his new position as a chief meteorologist.

Is Steve Weagle retiring? I know this is a WPVI thread, not necessarily a WPTV one, but still...

Does WPVI air midday news on Saturdays? Interesting to only air on Sunday unless I’m missing something obvious.

ETA: Remembering that CFB starts at noon on Saturdays for ABC. I guess that would be the “obvious” part I blanked on.

No. As far I can remember, it goes from whatever Saturday morning block the network airs at any one moment to sports broadcasts (now GMA to Litton to sports). No Action News past 9am.

Sometimes people misspeak? Maybe he is, maybe it’s just a misstatement.

No, it's always been Sunday through Friday. I always thought it was odd as well. Another interesting fact is that the Sunday edition was an hour long well before the weekday editions. Sundays were an hour as far back as the '90s, but the weekdays didn't expand to 12:30 until 2014.

Cecily mentioned that he's becoming a chief in their office send-off video as well. If so, it's well deserved.

Well deserved indeed. And talk about jumping into the fire, tackling Milton in week one. Granted it’s more impactful on the other side of the state, but a hurricane right out of the gate is quite the beginning.

Sundays at noon are pre-empted enough as it is; Saturdays would be a lousy spot for midday news. College football wipes it out automatically for months on end, and they kind of need that hour for the E/I junk outside of that season given all the Saturday sports coverage. Totally get not bothering there.

Anyone else not able to get onto 6abc.com right now? Every time I try, it just keeps reloading until it crashes.

I can get on now, looks like they got the refresh that KTRK's website got yesterday to coincide with the refresh of the ABC News website.

This is the 4th week in a row that Karen has been on the morning show but not at 10am. She is still in the open, but is left out of the close and no one is mentioned as being “in” for her.

It seems like they’re moving towards a system where in addition to weekend AM, Peyton does Mon/Tues 10am and 12noon, and Brittany in addition to her weekend PM duties, does Wed-Fri 10am and 12noon.

Karen did the Saturday and Sunday morning shows last weekend, (Oct 12 & 13th).

Indeed she did, and there was some weekday morning coverage in there somewhere for her, potentially the “make-good” for covering those shifts. Nonetheless, after a month, it has become fairly clear she’s not doing the 10 am. Maybe it’s a temporary thing. Maybe it’s permanent. We’ll see if they say anything either way.

Also interesting is no afternoon traffic reporter on 10/21, having the anchors do brief updates. Maybe no one was available, including the coverage folks, but considering they have, or had, a bench several deep backing up Jessica Boyington, it’s interesting.
