CNBC doesn’t stand for consumer news & business channel they legally changed that years ago I think around their 10 year anniversary or so. Also with the change in ownership I thought I heard somewhere they are keeping their name the same. But MSNBC might have to change their name somehow due to the MS part if NBC was to sell it.

I know they haven't yet announced what will happen to the names, but I don't think it's ideal for Comcast to allow the NBC brand to be used by another company that will basically become a competitor to NBC News programs & NBC News Now. They aren't renewing the Sky News licensing deal in Australia and Comcast doesn't even operate in Australia, so licensing the NBC brand to direct competitors in the same country seems like something they wouldn't be interested in doing.

Microsoft dropped out of that partnership decades ago and the name still hasn't changed.

But, then, who these days sees "MSNBC" and thinks Microsoft?  (Besides us.)

Massive fires happening in southern California.

In the 9:00pm PT hour, CNN has live coverage, FOX News has live coverage, NewsNation is simulcasting KTLA, ABC News live is simulcasting KABC. CBS News 24/7 is live simulcasting KCAL

MSNBC is airing repeats.

I don't see how MSNBC can argue this doesn't impact its core audience. A left wing cable news channel has no viewers in California? Nobody who watches MSNBC cares about a major climate disaster in California?

NBC News Now is just as bad. They are also airing a repeat of Top Story with Tom Llamas covering the fire from earlier in the day. When MSNBC is spun off it will be hard to argue how bad losing access to NBC News will really be when this is how they are covering major breaking news with access to NBC News. Maybe they can partner with a news org that is more committed to providing breaking news coverage because NBC News clearly isn't very good at providing coverage of breaking news when it happens outside of regular eastern times.

It is one disappointing aspect of MSNBC - not covering live breaking news as strongly as others.  I'm also not sure what is up with NBC News yesterday.  Even their coverage of President Jimmy Carter's arrival in DC, memorial at the Navy Memorial, and procession to the Capitol was minimal and focused only on the rotunda ceremony.  ABC and CBS both had more comprehensive coverage.  As a NBC viewer, I was disappointed.

There have been quite a few times during non regular hours (weekends/overnight) when MSNBC ignored breaking news and I checked to see if NBC News Now was at least covering it and nope, no coverage on NBC News Now either. This was really bad though, this wasn't an international story other news channels ignored, it's a major event happening in the Los Angeles market everyone else was covering live.

It also seems crazy to me that the priority of NBC News Now seems to be producing newscasts air that weekdays at the same time and basically compete against shows like the Today show, NBC Nightly News, and MSNBC Reports but does nothing live for west coast primetime or the weekend even if there is breaking news (unless the story is big enough to justify an NBC News Special Report which is then simulcast on the main NBC network)

This! Would it kill MSNBC to take a break from Trump for more than a few minutes to focus on other issues in the country/world. As bad as Fox News is it's breaking news component is significantly better than MSNBC's.

That was surprising from NBC. Granted it is okay to offer the public alternatives. In the past, I've literally had viewers calling to the station to complain about constant General Hospital preemptions due to special reports.

But from a news competition standpoint it did look bad that NBC was the only one not on the air for Carter until about 4:00. I was wondering if it was just my local affiliate not taking the coverage until I went online and saw NBC News now was basically the same.

Yes! I would think they'd streaming  to bolster access to Today on the internet in order to boost their audience. Then again do CBS or ABC stream CBS Mornings or GMA?

I know the above refers to Tuesday night's coverage, but it was basically the same last night as well. It'll probably be the same tonight, too.

But in addition to MSNBC and NBC News Now both airing reruns from earlier in the evening, CNBC was airing reruns of...Shark Tank.  🤦‍♂️

The smart thing would have been for either NBC News Now or CNBC -- or both -- to dump those reruns and simulcast KNBC, at least until their respective normal live morning programming starts.

The Rachel Maddow Show going back to 5 nights a week during the first 100 days of the Trump administration, with Alex Wagner on special assignment nationwide observing the impacts of the new administration for a series of reports and specials; Alex Wagner Tonight will return in May

The latest SNL depiction of MSNBC was unfortunately accurate. Their panel of host lined up like "The Avengers" , over obsessive coverage of Trump...to the line "we're Not going to give air time to every crazy Trump statement" despite doing it anyway.

I feel like this has become the MSNBC thread so I'll put it here...

Yesterday (as I make this post) was Andrea Mitchell's last day at MSNBC after a 17-year run at 12 Noon ET. However, her 46-and-a-half-year run at NBC News will continue as Chief Washington and Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent, appearing on a vast number of NBC News programs.

Didn't know that could open! Is that a video wall with wheels or an actual door. Cool nonetheless.

I believe originally there was a screen there, but it at some point, it was replaced with a door.

Kutler named President of MSNBC

'Rebecca Kutler takes the helm of the network at a key moment: MSNBC will be spun off from Comcast, along with other cable channels, in a transaction expected to be completed by the end of the year. With NBC News no longer as a sister entity, Kutler has talked of building a new news organization.'

An expansion for the network's news operation is planned prior to the SpinCo spinoff, with Jen Psaki and The Weekend's hosts eyed for larger on-air roles.

Confirmed.

Joy Reid and Alex Wagner are OUT as network hosts. The Weekend trio got the 7 p.m. gig and it looks like Jen Psaki is getting the 9 p.m. outside of Rachel Maddow's one night a week (and outside of the first 100 days).

Big shake up underway at MSNBC

- Joy Reid out at 7pm.

- “The Weekend” hosts to take over 7pm week nights, (Symone Sanders-Townsend, Alicia Menendez and Michael Steele).

- Alex Wagner potentially out at 9pm.

- Jen Psaki to gain 1 night at 9pm in addition to Sunday at noon and Monday night at 8pm.

- Rachel will return to just Monday nights meaning the Tuesday - Friday will be open again, could be a different show every night.

Edit: TheRolyPolly beat me to it. 😃

I think this is very surprising, I would’ve thought they’d make changes to other time slots first, the weekend primetime is weak, they have an open MSNBC Reports hour Monday - Friday, 4pm - 7pm on weekend needs a big overhaul, and then you wonder about what Lawrence’s plans are. I disagree with the decision to bump Alex Wagner, she has a good show, but struggled to bring Rachel’s viewers along, which was never going to happen the way MSNBC thought it would. I hope they can keep Joy around, perhaps a return to AM Joy on the weekends would be good for her.

The new schedule is here.

Highlights:

- Jen Psaki moves to Tuesday-Friday 9pm.

- Expansions of the Reports shows to two hours each on dayside.

- Jonathan Capehart gets a new weekend morning show.

All moves starting this spring.
