GraphicsMan 345 Posted March 2 Posted March 2 I’m gonna make a crazy prediction with CBS and CNN joining forces I think…

My point is that this could be a contention for renegotiation of lower contractual obligations because CBS no longer demands the same key demo ratings.

Then CBS pulls a WISH and decides playing second fiddle to a Fox affiliate is worth it and you are left with Judge Judy and Byron Allen's syndicated shows. Yes, CBS is tanking in the demo with the latest changes, but if you are in a football or march madness loving market, you take the L with CBSEN and Mornings knowing that they still have the #1 daytime lineup, some still-solid hits in prime time, and a decent sports portfolio. Plus, the newscast can survive a bit of a hit if you get enough content for the streamers and socials. Edited March 2 by GodfreyGR 1

But I would suspect they will keep the respective brands intact. In my mind, it's more likely that corporate will try to find ways to consolidate real estate. In New York, CNN's operations could move into CBS Broadcast Center. In Atlanta, WUPA/CBS moves in with CNN. But that's not the same as merging brands and broadcasts. Sharing resources goes without saying but I more than doubt you'll suddenly see CNN Newsroom airing in place of Evening News, for example. I doubt much will change in the short term with what viewers see on air. 4 1

I doubt much will change in the short term with what viewers see on air. Integrating the two cultures will probably be brutal, especially if a significant amount of staffers remain from the Circa 2002 and 2009 merger squabbles. Back then CNN and CBS News staff fought publicly over whose newsroom will be shuttered and who becomes just a brand. The 60 minute crew were said to be livid at the thought of anyone from CNN overseeing content. Dan Rather and staff leaked to the NY Times all but saying it was beneath them to be bossed by CNN staffers and end up merely as a brand. That squabble continued on the TVSpy watercooler and it was obvious it would be a disaster to merge them. Probably still true Edited March 2 by l_miro

And let it not be said companies have not made moves that in hindsight were kind of stupid. But whatever one may think of the new owners (and I fall into the “not remotely a fan”’camp), the odds they are dumb enough to axe that brand are next to nil. That is not to say they can’t or won’t mess around (even more than they already have) with the content and can’t or won’t do more cross-pollination, but there is no way in heck they’re killing the brand itself. 1

Both CNN and CBS News are shells of the brands they used to be, but data doesn't lie. CNN has 42 Million Facebook followers compared to the 11 Million for CBS News (hell, even FOX News only has 33 million followers on FB). Also (according to Google Gemini) CNN.com attracts 100-150 Million unique visitors each month, CBSnews.com draws some 87 Million visitors. Long story short, CNN still has solid value and recognition as a brand- despite what their broadcast ratings show. 3
TheNewsTV 342 Posted March 17 Posted March 17 Another change in the CBS Evening News setting. They've stopped using the newsroom as a backdrop for the news broadcast. The close-up shots don't reveal much of the new graphics on the Studio 47 screen. 1
TVLurker 389 Posted March 17 Posted March 17 they must really be aiming to be the least successful revision of the CBS Evening News if they're back at Studio 47. 2
MorningNews 1711 Posted March 18 Posted March 18 Haha the Tony era is nearly over. They’re starting the rapid set changes already which is where they always begin. And while I don’t think CBS is necessarily trying to compete with NBC or ABC for viewership anymore, headlines like this can’t be going over well: 1 1
