It really does make me wonder if they don’t pull the plug on this broadcast altogether. I know it’s not likely, but we’ve seen a lot of unlikely (and sometimes unprecedented) changes.

they must really be aiming to be the least successful revision of the CBS Evening News if they're back at Studio 47.

Evening News has been in 47 since their relaunch in January 2025.  The only change now is that Evening and Weekend are both back on the video wall side of the studio.

I haven't watched the full episode, but going by those screenshots it feels a lot like they are almost going for a mashup of the 2019 and 2022 graphics on the videowalls.

While I liked their attempt at nostalgia by bringing in an older anchor desk with the newsroom backdrop, the video wall presentation is a lot more compelling and feels more grounded.

This whole transition has been a 💩 show.

My prediction that Tony will be anchoring CNN International at 4am in 2027 still seems like a possibility.

If I am Margaret Brennan, Major Garrett or Matt Guttman, I would tell HR I don’t want the job.

Between CNNI's dual focus on Europe and Asia (each in a batch of different time zones) and their use of CNN/US shows, I don't think the global channel originates what would be considered a dead hour of news.

Another change in the CBS Evening News setting. They've stopped using the newsroom as a backdrop for the news broadcast. 03-16_19-25-02_CBSHDNY_CBSHDNY.0.ts_snapshot_00_01_777.thumb.jpg.20972b7ccd51b44761c2af85f77b3937.jpg03-16_19-25-02_CBSHDNY_CBSHDNY.ts_snapshot_07_35_056.thumb.jpg.d95bc302c7050d35338f1c6b60a65346.jpg03-16_19-25-02_CBSHDNY_CBSHDNY.ts_snapshot_07_49_779.thumb.jpg.1ab952f9495bc4e400689d3598397d6f.jpg03-16_19-25-02_CBSHDNY_CBSHDNY.ts_snapshot_20_32_222.thumb.jpg.3aaddc2578c58d99b0fa1bbf969673b1.jpg03-16_19-25-02_CBSHDNY_CBSHDNY.ts_snapshot_34_51_520.thumb.jpg.7bf340d5b76cd0e1328601ad702c5770.jpg03-16_19-25-02_CBSHDNY_CBSHDNY.ts_snapshot_34_54_558.thumb.jpg.aeb9da3a1faff2b5fe5867502d5060d5.jpg

The close-up shots don't reveal much of the new graphics on the Studio 47 screen.

That's a shame. The newsroom set looked really good, it was the best on the air between the evening shows. everyone does video walls now so that set them apart. Really liked the old school Rather looking desk that they had. This doesn't look too bad though.

Media Consultants:"the focus group hated the newsroom backdrop" *sends a dozen charts showing why video wall backdrops are a must

However, their agent will likely advise them to take the deal, ensuring their contracts include favorable exit clauses and additional safeguards. The bigger question is whether their ego will allow them to say no?

I can only imagine that CBS talent keep taking that job because they want the personal and career fulfillment of saying they got the highest job in broadcast news. Anchor of a network evening newscast---Walter Cronkite's broadcast at that.

But the evening news anchor has shown itself to be ticket to the exit at CBS. Maurice Dubois found that out the hard way.

There must be money to be made off the show because CBS hasn't pulled the plug yet.

This image from linkedin perfectly encapsulates CBS's current lot.

I don't think the fact that CBS Evening News hasn't been cancelled makes it profitable. It has been reported by credible outlets that CBS News loses about $50 million a year, so overall it's unprofitable for CBS to be in the news game yet they still operate CBS News.

I still think the purchase of CNN will result in drastic job cuts at CBS News. CNN struggles in the ratings and I just can't see SkydanceParamountWBDiscovery or whatever that evil empire will be called producing separate low rated newscasts that compete directly against each other. Murdoch is pretty successful with the FOX network focusing on local news while his far right propaganda cable channel covers national news. This is what I could see happening in the future at CBS. CBS News will mostly only exist at the local level, while CNN acts as the national news service just like FOX News Channel.  When major news breaks, CBS would just simulcast CNN the same way FOX does for FOX News Channel.

But CBS should have it own news programs specifically airing on CBS only. For example CNN produced Telemundo newscasts in the 90s and was the provider of news coverage when needed. They could go the way Fox does with Fox News channel but I’m saying cbs should still have a news programs specifically airing for cbs that cnn would produce.

Is there anyway you could screenshot or copy and paste the text from the article, it's paywalled.

Vanity Fair has a new article with criticisms of Weiss and Dokoupil from current and former CBS people:

I read the entire VF article and to be quite honest and blunt, the CBS Evening News has been irrelevant since the retirement of the late Walter Cronkite in 1981, before I was even born. I had no care for Rather in the chair during the 80s, 90s and 2000s and no matter how many times they have tried to revitalize that flagship broadcast, it long since hit the iceberg and sunk. And that's the way it is.

CBS Evening News Keeps Hemorrhaging Viewers | Chart

"The Dokoupil-led “Evening News” hit its lowest-rated month in total viewers since the anchor took over, averaging less than 3.9 million viewers throughout April. In the advertiser-coveted 25-54 age demographic, the show is averaging 497,000 viewers, its lowest April in the demo this century. But the show is up 2% in total viewers from April 2025, which remains its lowest-rated April in total viewers this century."

"The show averaged 4.279 million viewers in its first quarter, down 7% from the same period last year, while its 25-54 audience was at 535,000 viewers, down nearly 20%."

" It comes as competitors such as ABC News’ “World News Tonight” averaged 8.54 million viewers and roughly 1.1 million in the demo —more than double CBS News’ numbers"

"Weiss told staffers in January that ratings were not her ultimate measure of success."

It's not just CBS Evening News. CBS News is hitting ratings low from morning to night

"while “CBS Mornings” is also on track to hit its lowest total-viewer numbers since October after a steady decline throughout the year’s first quarter"

To me, Rather was fine, flaws and all--- Somebody had to be in third place , and that was him. Dan Rather is no Cronkite but  his tenure was the most stable era of the evening news since ole uncle Walter's departure. The broadcast reamins no better without Rather.

And people forget that Rather was #1 for several years after Cronkite retired. CBSEN slipped to second in about 1987.. a strong second and still occasionally first. A big part of that slide was the switch to people meters for overnights in major markets.  And another factor in the early/mid 90’s was CBS losing NFL to FOX and several powerhouse CBS affiliates in major markets to FOX.

Speak of the devil, sad but human to see that age is beginning to take its toll on Dan. He spoke on CBS Sunday morning regarding the end of CBS News radio. He's still sharp.

Compared to two years ago

He was a heavy tweeter just a few years ago but has largely gone silent on socials which I assumed was because of his age. This is hard to see but to your point an inevitably.

I also haven’t seen Brokaw publicly in a few years.

Things are really getting worse in CBS News….

Tony had to report the T****-Xi summit in the Grand Hotel of Taipei, Taiwan because of visa.

Meanwhile, NBC became to the first broadcaster (foreign or domestic) to broadcasting from the Imperial Ancestral Hall. And CBS had to use a hotel in a different country.
