  1. Looks like WDJT is going to move from the old CBS O&O look to the new one tomorrow at noon. I think this makes them the second non-O&O to adapt this look, right?

  2. It's a polarizing look, but I think the Chicago version works better, as there are simply more unique landmarks and imagery to use. Feels a little more fleshed-out. It's no coincidence that WFLD's current boss and morning anchor both came from Seattle.

  3. I wouldn't say "lazily". Strategic might be a better descriptor. Here in Minnesota (for when WCCO uses the CBSMN branding), greater MN is simply different Minneapolis/St. Paul- the communities are different, the politics are different, the people are different, and 'CCO has KCCW in the northern part of the state that serves a great deal of viewers OTA who are 3-4 hours from Minneapolis; and for what it's worth also does a decent job in balancing the stories and wx between the metro and Greater MN. That made "Minnesota" smarter for them to use than Minneapolis-St. Paul in this case. Even the major newspaper, the Star Tribune, just rebranded late last year as "The Minnesota Star Tribune" (and it's the Minnesota Twins, Minnesota Vikings, Minnesota Wild... The list goes on). Then you have the O&O's in the markets that LOVE their city and much of the region revolves around what's happening in said city- Philly, Pittsburgh, and Baltimore instantly popped into my head as examples for that.

  4. Yes, KTVN in Reno, NV did this first. Good to see WDJT rebrand their news to the market they cover unlike other CBS O&O's that just lazily brand to the state they're in.

  5. I wouldn't be surprised if other Fox O&O stations are to get similar morning newscast openings like that of WFLD 32 and KCPQ 13. For WNYW 5, they'd have the Mahattan skyline buildings (like 1WTC, Empire State Building, etc.), the Statue Of Liberty, and the Brooklyn Bridge as local landmarks that'd easily be in their Good Day opening. KTTV 11 would have the Hollywood sign. WTTG 5 would have the U.S. Capitol, Washington Monument, White House, etc. It'll be interesting to see this be rolled out.

  8. Now that you mentioned it, it makes sense when you see the logos after Regis retired. The newer the host, the smaller the "Live".

  11. They actually did a double box like this while going back to regular programming for a bit, while there were active confirmed tornadoes, then going back full on coverage "when needed". I was kind of perplexed & disappointed.

  12. I know it's just a break but I think I'd just stay on-air rather than putting reality as the priority on the Weather Channel during a weather event.

  13. Gotta love a show called "Live" being taped two weeks in advance.

  14. That would mark a return for the Stars on both stations: KDFI was the Stars’ local over-the-air broadcaster from 1995 to 2000, while KDFW carried Fox-televised games featuring the team from 1995 to 1999 via the network’s NHL package.

  16. Let’s talk about something that’s a little more substantial… Scripps recently released its latest financial report after a nearly one-month delay, and we finally know why. The company needed the time to basically shore up its debt and kick the can a bit further down the road. Even the delay itself didn’t buy Scripps enough time to have a financial report worth praising. Here’s the total numbers for 2024 (with 2023 in parentheses for comparison) for Scripps Local Media: Core advertising: $552.2 million ($598.8 million) Political ad revenue: $342.8 million ($32.9 million) Retransmission/distribution revenue: $764 million ($752.3 million) Political ad revenue clearly saved the Scripps budget, because core advertising took yet another hit. Retransmission revenue grew from the previous year, but not by much. Scripps doesn’t have too much leverage against cable and satellite companies as some of the bigger competitors do. But it’s also possible that the cable and satellite companies have little juice left to squeeze out. In short, Scripps is somehow still afloat, but the boat is definitely leaking. Former KSTP news director Kirk Varner questions whether the bad news at Scripps could be a sign that some TV stations may eliminate local news altogether in 2025.

  17. In advance of the expected tornado outbreak impacting portions of the Deep South (which some atmospheric analogues suggest could be under similar conditions to those that caused the 2011 Super Outbreak that struck the same region), TWC has announced schedule changes for Saturday (March 15). According to TitanTV and OnTVTonight, AMHQ will be extended by one hour until 10:00 a.m. ET, accordingly shifting Weekend Recharge one hour later (pushing it to 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m., preempting Pattrn). Long-form programming reruns will be preempted for extended storm coverage through at least 10:00 p.m. ET. (Barring that the event busts, Frozen Gold reruns still scheduled from 10:00 p.m.-1:00 a.m. ET will likely be preempted as well.)

  19. Never understood how Joy Reid was able to sustain a career in broadcast -- in liberal media, no less -- after posting a series of bigoted and homophobic/transphobic posts on her blog, then denying she wrote them and claiming someone must have hacked her, and after an investigation involving the FBI (yes, the FBI) proved no evidence of that, she still insisted she had no recollection of making those posts. Would have respected her more had she owned her past views, apologized for them, and explained why she was a better person now, rather than inventing stories and wasting the time and resources of the literal FBI to investigate her lies about being hacked. But since she never took responsibility for that, I'm not sorry to see her go.

  21. Agreed. Incase VR ever becomes the full time set...I'm split on it. On the one hand, it's unique and innovative, and a break up from the traditional anchor desk, video wall studios that we see. I like seeing them on CBS News 24/7, but for some reason they look odd on the local level to me.

  22. All-new parade graphics debuted today, adopting lower thirds that are reminiscent of the collage-like panels in the news opens. The old St. Patrick's look was nice, but the stock banners used across all parades have long needed an overhaul. (Baichwal, Butler, Rivera, Garcia, and newbie Lisette Nunez in the station contingent.)

  23. The article mentions WRTV. According to one email I read from FTVLive's Patreon... there could be a hint as to what could happen there. I won't say more as I took it with a grain of salt, but still...

  24. Guess the only question is if they go with new call letters to leave the Winston era behind entirely; if they do hopefully they just don't do a dull CW tie in (because WCWC for "CW Cleveland" is uhh...remember that Les Moonves said there was a good reason it wasn't called The WC ), and maybe grab WJKW as perfect symmetry (to go in effect on September 16, the 40th anniversary of the return to WJW) if they can get those calls (WJCW would work if they just have to put in a CW reference).

  25. At the end of the 5pm today after the last weather hit Lonnie announced why he hasn’t been doing the 6 and 11. He suffered a head injury a few months back, was told to work shorter days and to not drive at night, he is now taking time off. 26. Just because FNC has been able to bodge together their own weekend lineup that somehow works for a 'rusted remote' audience doesn't mean that MSNBC or any other network can do it when its competition is sports or event programming. We're talking about an audience that probably still wants Lockup to somehow return, and do we really need yet another Sunday politics show? Also with the late night hosts having long gone to Monday-Thursday, I expect the rest of the industry (including daytime) to follow the same model. We don't need a Maddow Friday show outside when it's required.

  27. @TVNewsLoverI get your point about inconsistency but...To piggyback off of @Breaking News, it wouldn't make sense for the network to pay someone that much to anchor on a lower rated slot.
    1 point
  28. I agree. One of the biggest hallmarks of daytime television and news is the predictability of seeing your favorite personality. This matters more so for anchors than weather casters, but WCBS's lineup is still very confusing. The decisions from CBS 2 regarding John Elliott are so puzzling. He clearly has the the lively eccentric weatherman personality that morning shows go for. Why was he removed from weekday mornings, and why do they seem to be so hesitant to give him a regular weekday slot? He's arguably one of the strongest personalities on a very stiff and straight news station. Not specific to CBS News NY, but these days anchor lineups are getting a lot more unpredictable. I'm tempted to say the average viewer doesn't care, but I think the regular news viewer does. Wouldn't it just be simpler to have: John Weekday Mornings & Noon Lonnie Weekdays 5pm Tony Weekdays 6-11pm newscasts Vanessa: weekend mornings Whoever: weekend evenings

  30. You are 100% correct, and corporate has been made aware of that, but will not be budging. I think they’re more concerned about possible liabilities than any competitive advantage or profit. They understand they will effectively be losing money on this, but seem okay with that

  31. Feels like there aren't a lot of legacy Nexstar stations that have their own choppers to begin with. Most of the ones that do have them came from Tribune or Media General purchases. Of those: KTLA for car chases and fires and KFOR for tornadoes stand out as the two biggest examples of their stations in markets that have helicopter coverage as a viewer expectation and would put a station at a significant competitive disadvantage without one. The other question is, does this include ending their participation in multi-station helicopter shares like Denver?

  33. WVTV is very likely going to be the lighthouse 3.0 station for Milwaukee by default (they stepped on a rake selling WCGV for the Sinclair/Tribune deal that failed and the only other station, WMLW, is sharing with low-power WBME-CD), so in technicality Sinclair is just waiting to make all the deals to get their subchannels on other stations and Rincon is de facto just holding a license and submitting FCC paperwork for the station's issues.
    1 point
  34. Sinclair gets to run a station without having to deal with the FCC. That's the new owner's problem. Not to mention getting some cold hard cash they may need... Plus, it frees up more opportunities to buy stations even though this new FCC could give them a free pass to go nuts.

  35. Look for most Nexstar stations that still have them to lose their choppers very soon. You heard it here first.

  37. Scripps has had some presence or another in Denver for more than a century (barring 2009 to 2011). KMGH wasn't just some random clunker they ended up being stuck with. They seemed to think Ion was another Food Network... I feel like the company that had the ingenuity to put HGTV on the air and fleece Belo out of the Food Network is basically gone. The current Scripps Networks is not particularly inventive like the previous iteration was.

  38. @TampaBowler I've removed the leak, at the request of an frustrated Nexstar staff member. I don't know where you got those images, but I suggest you run stuff like this past me or other mods before sharing sensitive info like this.

  40. I’ve said this before… There are other metrics stations use to determine success aside from ratings. Streaming is a huge factor that will only grow in the years ahead. As long as the station is making $$$, it doesn’t matter if they’re #1 or #5. WFLD sounds like a good fit because they’re looking to spend $$$ on content. Like you said, he has plenty of money and could work out a deal to do long-form weekly reports or something twice a month. Personally, I can’t see him doing daily reports, but you never know. I think it will come down to how much a support staff would cost, etc… not necessarily his pay. His age makes zero difference as long as he wants to work and is in good health.
    1 point
  41. Ratings-wise, WFLD is still in 4th or 5th, depending on the time of day, but their product is absolutely fine. There's not one bad station or tough watch in town. They've been more ambitious in terms of creating other sports & documentary content. WBBM has a strong evening team, even if the morning news feels like a steady stream of temporary patches. WGN is obviously strongest in the mornings, with solid teams at all slots. WMAQ is always solid enough, if not too memorable. Again, a strong evening team, but not a lot of quality depth on their weather, sports, and female anchor benches. As for Chicago's #1 News, a non-sweeps period has made Goudie's absence less noticeable, so far, while their only other obvious talent hole is Cheryl Burton, but that's nothing new.

  46. Just something I noticed this morning on WCCO's page- a Co-branded "Day of Service" with Xcel Energy... With the old "4" logo? (Which is odd because even with that logo, WCCO almost always placed the call letters underneath it) Oversight on someone's part?

  50. The Tampa/St. Petersburg/Sarasota stations are all wall-to-wall with coverage at this time. And Nexstar is streaming WFLA LIVE on WFLA.com. These Nexstar sets make for interesting use during a hurricane.... Surprisingly, up in Gainesville/Ocala, only WOGX is covering the storm (since it's 10pm and sister station WOFL is live with news anyway). The Sinclair stations are in regular programmng with weather alerts, and WCJB doesn't have a crawl or anything at this point. Up in Tallahassee, only WTXL is in wall-to-wall mode while WTWC is in regular programming, FOX 49 is airing WCTV's newscast, and WCTV has a weather alert on the screen. The storm is poised to hit the Tallahassee market, so they would be wise to go wall-to-wall soon.
