IMO, the idea of trying something different isn't the issue. If anything, I'd gladly welcome experimentation. I feel like local stations can produce more than just news and lifestyle shows, and making different kinds of programming would at least help stem the loss of viewers to streaming at least somewhat. That said, the implication I get from this new show is that it's basically gonna be a clone of The Daily Show; that is, a "comedic" retelling of current events while cracking a bunch of wheezy, stale political jokes done better elsewhere. That's not an experiment, that's just cheap and dumb. At least, that's just my guess. If I'm wrong, feel free to tell me. Believe me, I'd be happy to hear it.6 points

There's plenty of other options in town for local news at 11 on a Saturday. Why do the same thing with the same stories as your competitors? Why not try something different as a lead in to a popular network comedy sketch show? Local stations used to produce all kinds of programming... comedy, music, etc... why not go back to that? Why does a local station just have to purely be a news operation? If audiences and revenue are shrinking why is it such a bad idea to try something else?6 points

Reports are she is joining the talk on cbs. I really enjoyed watching her when she was a regular on Today. Never felt Access Hollywood was the best fit for her.3 points

News organizations should not be producing comedy.3 points

Retransmission agreements for virtual MVPDs are different than with traditional MVPDs. The networks negotiate carriage on behalf of the affiliates, though not all Fox affiliates are on-board with them (at least as of this 2017 article). But it's a moot point, for now at least, as the two sides have agreed to a short-term extension.3 points

Wow. Just when we thought WKYC couldn't get any worse. Ridiculous.2 points

I get what you're saying. I do. And I'm all for trying something new and hoping it sticks. But I'll echo what @Adam MadMansaid. If this is something like what The Daily Show is, then it's just going to be a cheap gimmick. The only difference is that this show is airing on a local television station, not a show on a comedy network, where it would belong.1 point

That's a "y tho" from me. Once again WKYC drops the ball and it's pretty clear to see why they're struggling to compete with others with gimmicks like this. Tegna has murdered this station....1 point

There's a new series on TODAY All Day called "Making of TODAY" where Al Roker hosts and gives behind the scenes of TODAY's reporting including a behind the scenes of Studio 1A. It looks like Orange Room is still there and unless they only turned it on for this tour, the back wall screen still functions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gqg_eIBqIU1 point

Technically they are different because they are OTT broadcasters versus cable or paid TV channels. Unless Comcast wants to take over the broadcast licenses of all their OTT affiliates then it's not the same1 point

I don’t want NewsNation to fail either. In fact, a year ago I pointed out that people were calling for NN to shut down, but nobody was calling for Newsy to shudder even though their cable numbers were lower. Just because I make a joke about their crummy set doesn’t mean I’m bashing them. I actually think the idea behind Abrams’ show is great: a host that respects people with other opinions, instead of calling them stupid. The problem is that isn’t NewsNation’s original mission: to bring a straight news program on cable. Instead it’s now the same type of content people already get elsewhere, just less rabid. Another problem is that their primary medium is cable TV. My parents cancelled their cable, and I'm not paying $60/month for Youtube TV or Hulu Live, just for the channel to get pulled during an inevitable Nexstar retrans fight. Cable TV is a declining business. Why do you think Newsy is prioritizing streaming and over-the-air? It's good they post a bunch of their stuff on Youtube to make it more accessible, but unfortunately their cable channel is coming first, which isn't great for growth. As for their website, SimilarWeb, a website analytics company, says NewsNation's site gets over 1 million total visits a month. Some of Nexstar's stronger stations, like KHON, WHNT, and WREG, get around 2 million. However, those stations have been around for decades, and NN is only one year old, so that million is nothing to scoff at.1 point

Some May 1987 KOVR 13 NEWS promos (8:55) with anchor Dan Gray supposedly explaining why he moved to California and KOVR's GM Ed Pfeiffer asking viewers for feedback on how to make the then ABC affiliate better station. I remember seeing these when KOVR originally aired them way back when 34 years ago and thinking to myself "This will never work". This look didn't last long at KOVR... Neither did Dan Gray. Although I think Gray was a pretty good catch for them though. I still think he and Jennifer Whitney might've been able to right the ship there at KOVR a little bit if they were given some more time. P.S. And a brief Rush Limbaugh cameo on the right @ 9:31.1 point

I just hope Gray isn't planning on switching ALL of their stations to this. Hopefully another package is waiting in the wings for some of the others? You just have to wonder what WVUE is going to end up with.....and when.....1 point

I agree. Both the colors and the size of the letters in the graphics are just not pleasing to the eye (the human eye, that is).......1 point

NBC News confirmed to NewscastStudio that the show has “permanently” moved to Studio 1A.1 point

Looks decent, and they do use the studio better than Today. I hope it doesn’t become like Studio 57 on CBS, used for everything.1 point

That's shocking, considering it hasn't been on its current set at 3C for very long (going on over 4 years since July 2017). I too would think this is temporary as work is still being done with 3A at this point (and possibly 3C), but not 100% sure. I will say NN always looked great from 1A during the past few election years looks great tonight with the updates to it1 point

BREAKING: Nightly News is moving into studio 1A along with the Today Show - starting tonight. Several sources have confirmed the news, including a NN producer on Twitter. https://twitter.com/jasoncalabretta/status/1437536515383611393?s=211 point

Top Ten things we copied from our competitors... 10) Giant video walls 9) location, baby! 8- Giving former Co-Anchors the "Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien" treatment 7) A newfound appreciation for Smooth Jazz 6) Outdated references to bits from retired CBS programs 5) That DJ we found leftover from the TRL days at Viacom 4) Paint everything orange- that got the Today Show 5 points, right? 3) Hey look! We got an couch from IKEA too! 2) Retired NFL players make great anchors! 1) Sure Willard wore a dress, but we gave Tony a fun hat! All possible sarcasm in the jokes is implied.1 point

I guess the difference is in the branding of the shows - Fox & Friends doesn’t advertise themselves as being in Rockefeller Center although their building technically is. GMA has been the morning show of Times Square for 20+ years, it’s a core piece of their identity.1 point
-
Is any part of Times Square visible from the set? If not, what was the point of moving to Times Square if they weren’t going to utilize it as a backdrop? Obviously ABC doesn’t Times Square but it feels a bit duplicative to center another morning show nearly across the street from GMA, and have Nate (who I like) taking on a similar role to Michael Strahan. On the flip side Fox & Friends is also at Rockefeller Center (just not that adjacent) so touché.1 point

Yep! Exactly. CBS has lost control. I honestly think it's time for National Amusements to sell. It's a mess.1 point

CBS affiliate AM crawls are all inserted locally with a "suggested" font only. In addition, morning tickers aren't mandatory and some stations may not have the equipment to put them to air or properly trigger them. Stations were literally sent a PNG base file with font sizes and logo positioning.1 point
-
What's the requirement for affiliates to have time/temp/ticker? KVLY (Gray) Doesn't ever have that on CBS or TODAY (Unless they insert their alert bar for school closings etc).1 point
-
This package and the opens made their debut in April 2016. The O&O look would usually get redone every three years, though since 2010 it's been more evolution than revolution. Nothing in quite a while. The weather graphics got a refresh about a year and a half ago; they reflect the CBSN local streams. They might not change a thing, not worth the trouble and the expense, but on the other hand since the stations group and CBS News have merged, they might go in an entirely different branding direction.1 point
-
No, they didn't. The package they're using is 5 years old. They keep intermixing that with graphics from the 2013 package and the CBSN package. It's a branding mess. It shows your audience that you are unorganized and as it bleeds into the journalism, the audience senses that the stations aren't doing their best coverage.1 point
-
I wish WCBS would use a ticker like this rather than the one they use. I also don’t think it’s necessary to have a ticker on all newscasts.1 point
-
The other two NEED to have the same style ticker WITH their stations’ logos included. No excuses.1 point

Just like abc, a giant graphical step backwards. The tiny bug looks right for a streaming service not network tv. I liked the serif looking font for CBS, but this is a nice look as well. Of all the Morning show attempts CBS has has was CBS This Morning (2012) the most successful? and I’m curious as to which morning show attempt do you think was CBS’s best?1 point

I feel like most everyone else the name change was completely unnecessary. It seems like to me CBS had actually gotten some traction with CBS This Morning. Why throw all that away for a new name? I love the Eye Opener and am glad that it wasn't discarded. But I agree with the poster earlier on who said it is slowly devolving into a tease for the show ahead rather than serving as a look at your world in 90 seconds. The music will grow on me, I suspect. I love the new graphics and studio. I also like the fact that talent isn't confined to the main desk and is moving around a bit more. While I'm disappointed Anthony Mason is no longer part of day to day activities, I'm looking forward to the pieces to come from him which I think he excels at. I'm willing to give Nate the benefit of the doubt, but it seems to me he just sat there today like a bump on a pickle. Not sure what was up with that. He showed a lot more personality during the time he filled in for Tony while he was out on paternity leave. All in all, as long as they continue to focus on hard news the first hour with a bit more features in the second hour, I'll keep watching.1 point
-
Just throwing it out there. Should this thread be retired, since This Morning is done, with all relevant posts moved to a new Mornings thread, or would anyone prefer just a renaming of this discussion?1 point
-
Huh...that's the same one which popped up during Steelers pre-season games, so there's a change in the making for sure.1 point
-
I noticed that too. And it’s a pleasant change to have the logo bug on the left side of the screen rather than the right.1 point
-
Watching The Price Is Right, and it appears that new small CBS bug will also be used across daytime and primetime, as well.1 point
-
Agreed. The graphics are very CNN and the CBS bug is too small, otherwise the lower third is a nice look, much improved! The name change however was utterly unnecessary. If this fails, give up the morning attempts and hand the slot to the local cbs affiliates.1 point
-
The KDKA/KYW hybrid thing was a result of CBS forcing their O&Os to come up with redundancy plans after the COVID-19 outbreak at CBS News/WCBS HQ in NY. Of course, it forced other stations to pick up the slack last minute (Boston covering for NY, etc.) I doubt any of these will really ever see the light of day, but who knows?1 point
-
Any assumptions that the local CBS affiliates will start to rename its morning newscasts too? You know, some CBS affiliates want to keep "in line" with the network morning block, hence they name their local morning newscast as "This Morning" too (e.g CBS 2 News This Morning (WCBS), WBZ This Morning (WBZ), CBS 3 Eyewitness News This Morning (KYW))... Not sure how I'll feel if for example, WCBS's morning news is renamed to "CBS 2 News Mornings"...1 point
-
Educated guess: Give it to WCBS... Revamp it up and have it for set for News at 4. WCBS already has studio 46 which is in the same building as studio 57.1 point
-
Didn’t CBS already try and fail to use the Sunday morning formula/brand on weekdays back in the 80s??? Similarly didn't they switch from the name CBS This Morning to “This Morning” in the 90s? History repeats itself. The new studio looks better than the current, and Nate might be a better fit than Anthony but the name change was unnecessary. You’ve had the title CBS This Morning for 9 years now, keep the consistency. They would have had me with “Sunrise”, “Daybreak” or “Dawn” but CBS Mornings is bland. Hopefully they leave Jane in the OG set on Sundays and continue to top Today and GMA content wise on the weekdays.1 point
-
So they're moving Jane into the new studio as well? I get the "marrying" concept they're doing, but I'm still a fan of "If it ain't broken..."1 point
-
Oof... Talk about a downgrade on the name. Sure they're still in the ratings basement, lose to local newscasts in many markets, but yeah... the name (and the studio) is the problem. That's it.1 point
