Please put anything regarding the reports that Nexstar is in talks to acquire Tegna in the dedicated thread for the matter.

WFAA recently launched a 7am stream a few weeks ago (originally during severe weather mornings, now daily). Won’t be surprised if they simulcast it on KFAA, as well.

I"m surprised it took this long for a station group to embrace such a move.

It puts ABC, CBS and NBC affiliates on the same level playing field so they can compete with the FOX/CW/independent stations running local news during this time.

With sports pre-emptions happening more often (as TV is putting even more second-rate sports on at primetime), a station can stream at their normal time, and just playback the complete show when the event is over, or regroup if they have to do an abbreviated show on broadcast if they are filling the time for another live event.

And with network affiliations becoming more of a gamble, it's an easy move to repurpose the shows should the network drop their station.  Plus, not having to wait around for a live show would cut down on overtime.  If it was important enough of a story, they would be live with breaking news, anyways.

Yep, Tegna issued a press release today saying that all of it's stations will have 7-9am online-only newscasts by the fall:

https://www.tegna.com/tegna-announces-major-local-news-expansion-adding-more-than-100-hours-of-new-daily-programming-across-50-markets/

For some markets, that means local news in timeslots that wasn't available before, even if it's only on streaming (WNEP and KWES, for example).

This looks like something that could work, and I like how they're doing this. TEGNA stations across the West are joining forces to bring you a weather-only program called Weather Out West on streaming.

Stations featured?

  • KXTV Sacramento
  • KFMB San Diego
  • KING/KONG Seattle
  • KGW Portland
  • KREM/KSKN Spokane
  • KTVB Boise
  • KUSA/KTVD Denver
  • KPNX Phoenix/KMSB Tucson (TEGNA owns the latter and airs KPNX news there too)

It appears to be a daily occurrence, but I'm not entirely sure. Today, its KING 5's Ashley Ruiz hosting (and delivering the Seattle forecast) with a national summary from WXIA-TV Atlanta's Julie Martin (remember her? From TWC?).

WFAA's 7-9 morning newscast on WFAA+ launched this morning.  It doesn't appear to be on KFAA at this time, but that may change.

For a station like WWL, it would almost be like a second coming of the newscast CBS took away from them to put on WUPL.  Too bad the damage has already been done there as WVUE rules the market.

The FCC has reached a consent decree with TEGNA over an incident that occurred on KREM back in October 2021 where somebody hacked into one of the monitors on KREM's set and displayed a pornographic clip for "approximately 13 seconds" during a weather segment. TEGNA will pay $222,500 and implement a compliance plan.

I watched it live and had to double back to verify that I saw what I saw. It was 6:01 and 69° and the poor meteorologist had no idea.

It took four years to resolve this?

Speaking of KREM — the ill-advised decision to hub weekend weather out of Denver has been reversed (at least in Spokane). 25-year-veteran Michelle Boss is back on the weekend after being replaced some six months ago.  Did the other stations reverse too?

KARE11 evacuated yesterday after a fire at there studios in the Minneapolis / St. Paul area.  They are broadcasting from the transmitter site in Shore View, MN.

And bringing in some newscasts from Atlanta's WXIA / WATL.

Impressive work to set up a mobile unit like that given the circumstances

I feel sorry for those that lost their jobs over at WZZM and being hub out I saw it coming since TEGNA started to do it at the end of 2024 and also putting the for sale sign as well.

A couple misc updates... I hear TEGNA is working on a new group package.

Also, not sure if anyone is following the Reddit threads on the company bonus drama, thought it was interesting to see who their "top performing" stations were... and notably which ones didn't make the list.

I bet these stations are breathing a sigh of relief. Their chances of being divested/sold may have gone down, but who knows?

I’m shocked that KUSA isn’t on the list, since they’re one of TEGNA’s crown jewels.

Just wanted to put this out here, 10pm broadcast is the last at the current building before KSDK fully moves to their new building.

Tegna being Tegna, they really just moved into a plain, vanilla office building like that. At least employees are so thrilled to finally have windows

Generic looking.  Plus it seems they now focus on gimmicky names for their newscast, weather, etc.  Not the KSDK I remember from 12 years ago...

My wish for 2026 is for a station to build a set and not stick a desk 5 feet in front of a LED wall with a static city skyline background. Just one station. Please. I beg you. 🥺
