NewsNation reporting Strahan is leaving GMA by the summer.

This Is understandable as he had a full schedule and his daughter was juggling health issues. As for his replacement? Does there need to be one? GMA has enough anchors. Lara's role seemed redundant after Strahan entered.

Will be an opportunity (or unexpected obligation) for the network to reconsider both talent succession planning and show format.  Will be interesting to see if the show maintains a three-anchor format by just replacing Strahan and moving on, or if we see a return to either a two-anchor format a la Charlie-Diane/Diane-Robin, or to more of the ensemble format (Robin, George, Josh, Sam, Lara) that jettisoned GMA to #1.

Not a moment too soon, because I think they ran out of breaking news in the 8am hour this morning. 🫤

Hehehehe, it ain't even breaking news!!!! Notice too the ticker has the station logo, wonder if affiliates can program the ticker to a point where the logo's insterted in instead of the ABC News bug or if this ticker is a varient that the local ABC affiliate is using.

Good Morning America is planning to depart its iconic Times Square Studio this summer

Wow, Times Sq will no longer host any morning show with CBS Mornings also gone.

Does GMA still use an indoor audience on the second floor? If so, I hope they continue that in the new building.

Even Today hardly utilizes its plaza audience anymore.

Today is out on their plaza almost daily...

Can GMA open the 100 year capsule buried in front of the studio a bit early?

Even though we knew this was coming, it’s still kind of sad. GMA has been synonymous with Times Square from the days I started watching as a kid. They put up panels and obscured on-screen views of the windows years ago anyway.

Having watched and visited, Today is on the plaza for a brief segment at the top of the 8am hour and maybe 1 segment at 8:30, in its four hour runtime.

The only time they really heavily utilize the plaza is for concerts.

I’ve always thought it made more sense to have it on at 9am right after the mothership. Most ABC affiliates air Live with Kelly and Mark then, which could easily move to 10am on the east coast. Tamron Hall (on a lot of ABC affiliates on east coast) could slide to 1pm, with GH at 2pm, and local news starting at 3pm. The issue would be the central/mountain/pacific time zones.

Appears GMA3 has been replaced with an extension of the 7-9am show, ala Today Third Hour. It’s branded as The Third Hour of GMA.

From what I can gather (from a quick google search) is that ratings haven’t been good for GMA3. In addition, ABC wants everything placed under the GMA banner (eliminating the staff of GMA3, etc…). This appears to be a part of bigger changes expected to happen over the coming months.

I think the EP of the third hour was cut in ABC’s most recent workforce exercise. The reports noted that they’d be combining all GMA production under one person.

As someone else pointed out, an hour of GMA 4 hours after the initial show is futile. Might be better using the hour as an ABC News Live program.

GMA Cubed  has gone though five rebrandings in it's seven year run. It's been an unstable program from the jump.  Im surprised ABC didn't outright give up and cancel it.

Strahan, Sarah and Keke was my favorite incarnation of the program, but it never took off.

Agree. Take a page out of the NBC News Daily playbook.

With (Not) Live with Kelly and Mark taping several episodes a day now so there are extended weeks off, why is ABC still compelled to make 9am a priority?

I am assuming this summer being a refresh for GMA leaving Times Square and some anchor changes, ABC should start pushing GMA3 to be 9am. I think Kelly wouldn't throw a temper tantrum this time. However, this probably would not happen until September 2026 at the earliest with syndie contracts.

One has nothing to do with the other. No viewer cares a whit that they prerecord shows. They don’t get remotely hung up on the name of a show. What does matter is it’s a stable, reliable performer that brings in the cash via the syndication arm of the Disney octopus. The idea you’d deprioritize something that has worked well on your owned stations over a production schedule change is illogical.

Not going to happen in the near future.

Not going to happen then either. The situation is not comparable to NBC and the path forward isn’t replicating that in the near term.

They used to air a third hour of GMA online...just do that on ABC News Live at 9am so viewers can choose instead of this goofy GMA3+4 silliness and make the noon hour across the country a floating news hour or just give it to the affiliates. There's barely enough GMA segments to justify a 20 minute brand extension, much less an hour, and it's pre-empted half the time anyways when something happens in Washington.
