At least it appears to be an option.  If it was mandated, a lot of affiliates wouldn't be too happy.  Lots of them do 9am newscasts and/or lifestyle shows during that time.

Not to mention it took an eternity for BOTH hours to be cleared nationwide.  Cough cough WWL cough....

Why give it a different name? Seems like the third hour branding should match the flagship program if you want to give the show a chance at success.

Probably will be no different than the third hour of GMA: "Good morning/afternoon America Day with What you need to know and Sarah and Micheal"!

Not a chance they’d succeed in “mandating” the hour be given back to the network by non-owned stations. We’re not in an era where the ownership groups are going to just say sure, have another hour—and most certainly not for the network that claims the most daytime real estate.

Obviously an academic exercise at this point, but had they tried swapping The Talk for this hour, they might have gotten that. But it seems they fully realize the reality. This is a streaming play that will happen to get a comparative handful of local clearances.

The name change is likely due to the possibility this 3rd hour would not air during the morning hours everywhere. They would have to go with something generic like CBS (News) Today or CBS (News) Now and not CBS Mornings.

What happened in New Orleans was clearly more for corporate reasons being owned by TEGNA, they got away with airing Eyewitness Morning News under Belo. As for this 3rd hour of CBS Mornings, considering what kinda content is planned for the 3rd hour, I'd think KCBS (Los Angeles) which simulcast the live East Coast airing, will probably stick to their local news at 6AM which also airs on KCAL, & just show the 3rd hour at 9AM Pacific. Here in Phoenix, I could see KPHO air it & bump The Price is Right to an hour later at 10 with Hot Bench possibly going over to sister indy KTVK, which is where the AZ Family lifestyle show Your Life Arizona airs.

0% chance it would work. Maybe less than zero were that mathematically possible.

I wouldn't speak in absolutes because CBS astoundingly greenlit a new soap opera in 2024, but I definitely see your point.

It'll air on CBS O&O's in Chicago (WBBM), Detroit (WWJ), Los Angeles (KCBS), Miami (WFOR), & San Francisco (KPIX).

Im surprised Nate Burleson wasn't tapped for that since he seems to be the more popular between the two --due in part to his cool fashion.

Nate also hosts the NFL Today on Sundays and is filming a game show for the network. He might not want an extra hour of working.

Here's a problem.  GMA3 airs at 1 PM (ET) on ABC and most NBC affiliates air the four hours of the Today show from 7-11 AM (local time) and NBC News Daily at 1 PM  But neither ABC nor NBC has The Young and the Restless, which CBS is not going to move out of its midday slot.  Furthermore, CBS's new soap The Gates seems to be headed for a 2 PM (ET) slot.  So affiliates could air their 9 AM newscasts, run the CBS Morning 3rd Hour at 10, and move Let's Make a Deal to 3, which I don't see happening.  And in the Central time zone it's common to have a 9 AM newscast followed by The Price Is Right at 10 and Let's Make a Deal at 2.  Where do you put CBS Mornings 3rd Hour?  This is never going to go on most affiliates; I remember that, before CBS forced WFMY to carry CBS's Saturday-morning newscast, they handed it off to their subchannel and will do it again with the new daily third hour.

CBS's third hour in the morning is intended for the o&os and the subchannels so most of you will not see a change on your CBS affiliate's main channel.

To use one of my two local CBS stations, WFMY, as an example: the lineup will still be:

4:30 AM The Good Morning Show (local)

   7 AM CBS Mornings

9 AM The Good Morning Show (another hour)

10 AM Let's Make a Deal

11 AM The Price Is Right

12 N    News 2 At Noon

12:30  The Young And The Restless

1:30  The Bold And The Beautiful

2 PM The Gates (I'm assuming this will be its timeslot)

3 PM The Good Afternoon Show (local, replaces DBL)

  3:30  Daytime Jeopardy!

I had a feeling it would be The Good Afternoon Show.

Reasons why there’s a less than 0% chance of “mandating” carriage. They already take up more of an affiliate’s schedule in daytime than ABC & NBC, so getting another hour is a non-starter. Now, if they were to (this is not a serious proposition) cancel Y&R, you could make that case. Or (slightly more so plausible) if they sent Let’s Make a Deal out to pasture. Or (perhaps most plausible but not for some time) if The Gates fails

to get out of the gate on a good footing, that could be an hour to claim for the morning brand expansion. But the idea any affiliate group is ceding an hour back is just not reality in 2024.

It's unclear if the 'The Gates' is 30 mins. or an hour. An article (from 2 days ago) that I read said it will run only 30 mins. Which would mean there would be 30 mins. that would have to be filled with something.

Honestly, I haven't come across anything that said it would be an hour-long soap. Safe to say most people assumed that given it is replacing an hour-long show, it would be an hour-long too.

So there's that....

Interesting…

I’d like for affiliates to have a choice if it’s only a half hour…

Keep Y&R at 12:30 and run B&B and Gates from 1:30-2:30 and syndicated programming at 2:30.

Or hourlong news from noon-1pm, Y&R from 1-2 and the two half hour soaps from 2-3 but I know that will never happen
