It'd be nice for once to see a studio in NYC/network flagship actually look decent & not like a downgraded copycat of a sister station in another market like L.A. which as documented here seems to have better news sets than New York & these initial photos from WABC sure look promising in that regard. Speaking of L.A., getting some KABC vibes, especially with the desk & even the background. 1 1

IMO, None of the NYC stations look better than their O&O siblings. KCAL's set looks better than WCBS, WTTG's set tops WNYW, KNBC and KXAS's sets top WNBC, KTLA looks better than WPIX and KGO and KABC have always looked better than WABC. I know some of these could be considered West Coast flagships, but still, one would think Market 1 stations would get all the best stuff. What's in the pic apparently tops anything WABC has in 30+ years. The current best looking set in market is between WPIX and WCBS but this should surely rival that. LA, Houston and Philly have the best looks to me but this is about to give them a real run for their money. Can’t wait to see it on air. 4 1

NYC studios are often constrained by space (especially height.) It's only been in the last decade with slimmer LED lights and video arrays that you could make smaller spaces feel grand and not cramped. KTLA and WPIX are very similar, but there's subtle differences on the LA set that give it the edge. In the case of WABC, IMO set size wasn't an issue, it was bad design and poor lighting that cheapened its look. Edited February 20 by MediaZone4K 2

Something I realized reading this is that this is really kind of the first complete building in NYC built for television (at this scale at least.) ABC's current facility is a mishmash of buildings, including one over 100 years old and formerly used as a horse riding facility (similar to WBBM's old facility.) NBC is in old radio studios, CBS is in an old dairy, WNYW is in an old opera house. WPIX is in an office tower. ABC had no real constraints designing the studio spaces here. This is about as good as it can get in NYC. 5 4

The WNN/GMA First Look set is “temporary”’ until the main studio is built out. They mentioned that in their first broadcast. 1

NowBergen 690 Posted February 18 Posted February 18 Forgive me for not riding the Eyewitness news fandom here. I find the studio way too blue in the pictures. Maybe once used it will look better but it is very bright blue all over the place. One question is the sports banner on the left and weather on the right- are they part of the set design all the time, seems it limits some shots during news segments.

I want to say ABC 7's best sets were probably the all blue set from the late 80s and the steps desk set from the 70s, And those weren't fantastic. Otherwise the station has had a rough history aesthetically. But this has definitely been a more substance than decoration station, because they have a solid news team, and have retained the most veteran talent. SB: I can't wait to see what this new building does for This Week and Weekend GMA because the lighting and camera quality on both shows is just as bad as WABC.
