The Roku FOX5 streaming channel guide for GNNY reads "Christal Young and Ryan Kristafer's edgy perspective on entertainment and lifestyle news in NYC and beyond." From that, I glean it's not going to involve any hard news at all, and if they're still going to be working the morning shift, this is probably being recorded sometime after GDNY wraps. I'm genuinely surprised- GNLA is a live newscast with headlines at the top.

So the "News on MY9" is a repeat of the hour long 6 O'Clock News on FOX5, and even says "previously recorded" on the upper left corner of the screen with the correct time and temperature on the FOX5 bug.

Well, that's stupid.

Do we know what that 8pm show is even going to be? I wouldn't be remotely shocked if it winds up being a clip show of segments from 5 & 6.

Here's your answer.

A 6pm repeat at 8pm.

In watching the debut episode of Good Night New York, I was decently impressed. I admit, I had low expectations from the start, but I think it is a good effort to create something unique and local in the daypart. The show isn't live but, more importantly, it isn't a "best of" GDNY clip show. The show is a stand-alone program with a nice naming tie to their morning show. NBC has TODAY and Tonight, and now WNYW has Good Day and Good Night. Maybe it is a bit gimmicky, but I like the tie-in.

The topics aren't heavy-hitting, but I think that's ok given they are clearly going for a late-night cocktail party vibe. The graphics give a great late night vibe to the show. Overall, it is much better than I expected and I believe if they stick with it, it has the potential to evolve into a great local show.

Full Show.... The color scheme reminds me of the Isaiah Factor on KRIV:

I suppose WNYW figured MY 9's ratings didn't justify a live newscast so they decided on a repeat of Fox 5 News.

But...is WLNY doing that much better in the ratings for them to have a live newscast at 8:00?

I think for  CBS2  CBS News New York, the focus is on digital streaming, so they want to capitalize on having newscasts for the digital audience, regardless of airing on WLNY. I think the same goes for the expanded morning news hours. I think adding them to the WLNY schedule is just an after-thought, not like it was from 2012-2019. I'd also be interested to see CBS News New York's streaming ratings.

WNYW doesn't have the streaming network of WCBS, so I'm a bit surprised they didn't put some effort into a new live WWOR newscast. It is good to see they put some more effort into "Good Night New York", though!

OnTVTonight has the 11:00pm as Good Day New York at Night and the description says... Highlights of past shows. So... that has to be it as to what that will be all about.

Yes, it HAS to be it … except it’s not. Your comments often come off as snarky and know-it-all. It wouldn’t hurt to tone it down a bit.

I wasn't trying to at all. I apologize if it did.

My thinking was that it was a best-of GDNY but it later turned out to be an all original program which is surprising.

WNYW is part of FOX Local (which is available on most streaming platforms).

It was not mentioned, but due to last Saturday night's college football game, the News at 10 aired in full on MY9 instead.

They have been utilizing MY9 a lot more than they have in the past.

Again tonight, the 6:00 news is airing on My9 due to football. These must be the initiatives of the new news director as of this Summer.

It seems like they air the live newscast at its regular time on MY9, and then air a repeat on FOX5 after the sporting event has concluded.

Last night, they aired the 10:00 news on MY9 and then repeated it with "previously recorded" on the screen after the Padres vs. Dodgers game.

On Monday, the 5:00 and 6:00 newscasts are listed for MY9 due to the NLCS.

With the launch of Fox Local, most Fox-owned stations in the CTZ and ETZ now record their newscasts at 10 or 11 for live streaming on Fox Local, then airing OTA after sports (unless breaking news or weather tracking is happening of course). After so many 1am NASCAR-delayed newscasts I'm sure the Fox O&O folks are happy this is an option now.

In this case though, that it's simulcast on WWOR is probably the last thing on their minds and their focus is fully on the Fox Local and after-game audiences; the My9 audience is not the focus here. Probably would be the same if WDCA was airing WTTG's 11pm. It's a corporate mandate more than it is a local decision.

Could WWOR soon be rebranded as FOX 5 Plus?! Recently, WPWR was rebranded as FOX Chicago Plus.

All the other situations don't have an entire state congressional delegation ready to declare 'an abandonment of New Jersey' if they even hinted at doing so. Fox isn't going to make any rebranding decision outside of dropping the "My" from My9 here or even mentioning 5 (notice how their TV listings don't mention Fox 5 at all with moved-over newscasts), especially when they have WTXF's headache still going on. At this point their NY cluster's best move has been to say nothing, and they'll continue to do so.

Granted WWOR is licensed to New Jersey but why is the state so protective of the station when channels like 4 and even 7 cover New Jersey pretty well?

Because it's licensed in New Jersey unlike WNBC 4 & WABC 7. WNET, the main PBS station in NYC, licensed to Newark is in kinda a similar boat.

I get that part.

And yes, a licensed station not fulfilling its obligation technically is an issue.... but does that matter in the grand scheme of things if stations licensed to neighboring communities are providing you comprehensive coverage?

A little history.  For many years, WOR's owner, RKO General, had broadcast license renewal issues with the FCC due to many concerns with the parent company and its practices..  Meanwhile, NJ senators had a rule passed in Congress that any commercial station that would relocate to a state without a VHF TV station would get immediate renewal from the FCC.  NJ's only VHF station had switched to public tv status much earlier (now WNET).  The intent was to have a broadcast station much more NJ focus than the NY/PHL stations that cover a few, not exclusively NJ stories. RKO General saw this as a way out of their mess for WOR.  The FCC first agreed, and put in place the requirement that WOR would need to have a news product and focus more on NJ than NY.  The station moved, set up a news department and some local programming (e.g. 9 Broadcast Plaza) but in the end it did not prevent the FCC from yanking the licenses.  Once sold, it became WWOR and each subsequent  owner was required by the FCC to maintain the NJ focus as part of their license.  Then came Fox, who bought WWOR, moved most of its operations into WNYW Fox 5, then watered down the unique newscast, then cancelled it, first replacing it with Chasing NJ at a late night hour, then dropping all news.  Subsequently, all operations were moved to NYC.  Only recently has any news reappeared on WWOR, a tape repeat of the 6 pm news on Fox5, not a unique fresh newscast.  The news broadcasts due to sports on Fox5 that have recently showed up on WWOR are Fox5 news (branding and content). For those reasons, critics are correct in that Fox is not meeting the conditions of WWOR's license.

The conditions that existed 40-plus years ago exist no more. WWOR-TV technically is a UHF station now, and has been since 6/12/2009. And the Secaucus studio is long gone.

The FCC doesn't regulate content or anything else for that matter anymore, thus why they didn't apply pressure on Fox when WWOR first replaced its traditional newscast with Chasing New Jersey/Chasing News and why they did nothing when that show went away altogether in spite of protest by New Jersey electeds.

Though it doesn't matter much in this era, it's about time to return WWOR's license back to New York City proper. And let Fox rebrand it to "Fox 5 Plus". I'd like to see it happen
