I want to say ABC 7's best sets were probably the all blue set from the late 80s  and the steps desk set from the 70s,

And those weren't fantastic. Otherwise the station has had a rough history aesthetically.

But this has definitely been a more substance than decoration station, because they have a solid news team, and have retained the most veteran talent.

SB: I can't wait to see what this new building does for This Week and Weekend GMA because the lighting and camera quality on both shows is just as bad as WABC.

The current studio is pretty nice, especially once the screens were updated and the backdrops modernized.

Weekend GMA will be coming from Times Square until June when all of GMA moves downtown.

Forgive me for not riding the Eyewitness news fandom here.  I find the studio way too blue in the pictures.  Maybe once used it will look better but it is very bright blue all over the place.  One question is the sports banner on the left and weather on the right- are they part of the set design all the time, seems it limits some shots during news segments.

WABC sets have bled EWN blue since.. forever.  There’s only one or two sets in the time span of EWN that were not heavily blue.

Totally subjective but IMO it's the worst in the market. The modernized backgrounds however were a good touch.

Yikes! I totally missed this thread! I've been wondering where the conversation was for this topic, but makes sense to have it here as this is the space on the forum for Sets and Studios! 😅

Wow, the new set will be amazing to see when it goes live in the coming days. I'm excited to see the new look of the studio, looks like it's pretty much ready to go. Based on what we've seen thus far, the set is beautifully designed, which exemplifies and embodies the flagship that WABC is and its signature product. The new space looks extraordinary and the current outgoing set's future is quickly coming to an end, it's been more than 10 years in their current studio. The street studio was amazing and a nice treat for New Yorkers passing by so it will be sad to see it go. But it served its time. It's the end of an era for sure for ABC's presence in the Upper West Side, but the new set now is as I expected very reminiscent of the grandeur of the KABC West Coast flagship and the quintessentially "Eyewitness blue" color which is a staple of WABC continues to be the case here in the design of this new set. Very nice element of having the blue neon Circle 7 overhead that is really beautiful and reminiscent of the past iterations of the design.

Let's see how the unveiling goes! Exciting times are ahead for WABC and New York fans of Eyewitness News in what will be the dawn of a new generation and chapter of this news organization and arguably the rest of the world who watch and stream on the internet!

I gotta say, WABC is finally embodying who they are with their on-air appearance. It took YEARS of us griping and bemoaning on these forums (I've certainly been one of those critics and outspoken about their appearance) at how they were never the "best" with their on-air look. They delivered a solid product, but never had quite the appearance that represented that because they always seemed to have the shorthand of the stick in that aspect, despite being the flagship ABC station. But as of this year, this will no longer be the case as that all changed last year when we witnessed the amazing graphics upgrades which are now the best in my opinion in the market, and now what looks to be a gorgeous studio to be unveiled in the coming days. Perhaps we'll see the new set unveiled ahead of the Oscars.

Congrats to them they certainly deserve it!

posted this in the WABC thread too..

They just had a really cool closing “thanking” viewers for watching and visiting them all these years in their building. They ended with a long zoom out of the outside of the studio and the extended theme. If anyone has it recorded and can post it was pretty cool.

It’s going to be odd walking by and not seeing channel 7 and ABC News on that corner of the UWS. What becomes of Peter Jennings Way?

I was thinking the same thing.  They might as well keep his name there because he showed up to work at that location for decades.  Where are the new building move they can just name it "Peter Jennings Place" or something.

It's also on YouTube.

Great moment.

While it's melancholy to see this move happen, this is for the best. From what I saw of Tamron Hall and The View the lighting in the new building looks great.

It is sad to see WABC and the ABC network in general leaving its longtime home on the Upper West Side especially with all of the memories, newscasts, and personalities that have been coming in and out of those doors but I am glad that they are planning for the future and 7 Hudson Square will be able to accommodate those needs. The same standards that made the station the most watched in the Tri-State and in the whole nation will continue and will improve with being housed in this modern facility as well as the standards of the ABC News division. I am based in Los Angeles but I know people in New York so it is going to be a change for them when they watch Eyewitness News and network news programming. *This will be posted in the WABC thread as well*.

So far the wide shot looks familiar, more an evolution than drastic change - big seamless digital screen and they use a nicely touched up skyline shot. Big change is a ticker with the EWN masthead in motion on the background video feed.

Weather center also a familiar, but updated look. The white round element behind it gives off CBS eye vibes.

Mics / sound needs tweaking, sounds like they are in a warehouse.

The full studio shot is impressive, big deconstructed '7' hanging over the set that adds depth and makes it look grand.

Desk is an improvement in branding.

They kept the 'accuweather' repeating background behind Jeff when he's at the anchor desk, but displayed on a screen, and with the theatrics of a camera zoom which is a nice touch.

Overall well done keeping what works and evolving it.

One big fix was the lighting! Dark:

Vs brighter more even color

The hollow Circle 7 with the clouds is also a great touch. My favorite element of the new set.

The echo sounding mics remind me of KTRK and KABC's sound. I don't know if this is a carryover from ABC News, but the anchors asko seem to be talking very loudly. I noticed that on GMA and WNT, my assumption is it's for dramatic effect just like their overuse of breaking news.

Very nice new studio. ABC 7 finally looks fully modern with their presentation. I like that the skyline isn't just a plain old skyline, but seems to be somewhat artistic with some animated graphics mixed in.

Anchors seem to be sitting close to each other. Michelle made mention of that at the end of this morning's farewell.

They tried to show a timelapse of the studio's construction but they started it too soon and they didn't show anything of consequence before they cut away from it. Perhaps we'll see more of that tomorrow morning or Monday.

Looking forward to seeing the rest of it used on other broadcasts,

Definitely worth the 10+ year wait! This has what a lot of sets these days are lacking, DEPTH and I love it! I know lots of people will say that's because of video walls, but this shows that you can have depth and modern tech mixed in!

The new desk is a huge improvement! It beats whatever that oversized one made up of two monitors was!

I'll say like @MediaZone4K, the weather area might be my favorite part of the new set! The circles and the clouds are so fun! IDK if it's a duratran or a wall from the image but if it's a wall, it would be cool if they replaced the clouds with lighting/snow/etc to reflect the weather. The angled desk kind of ruins the mood though.

It’s a video wall. Can probably change for different day parts and weather events.

And yes - worth the wait.. 13 years and 5 months to be exact.

My only gripe with the weather area is that solid blue wall. The light reflects off of it, and it kinda looks like an element from the old set. I like that it forms a circle 7 though.

Wow! For the first time in a long time we can now say every broadcast station in New York City has a decent set.

WABC-TV's new set looks very nice I must say.  The Circle 7 fixture above the main anchor desk and home-base area is also quite neat.  The anchor desk also looks nice.

I'm curious as to whether the new WABC-TV Eyewitness News set is Broadcast Design International, FX Design Group, or Z Space Creative project, or something from a different set design firm.

Hopefully the old WABC-TV set at Lincoln Center that made its final appearance this weekend gets donated to a local college or charter school journalism studies program and put to great use.  Just sayin'.
