Is the goal for Craig to still be a part of the third hour, or will they slowly transition him off and replace him there?

Do they plan on bringing in a third “news anchor” (Craig’s previous role) or is Carson now filling that role?

I'd say we wait until when/if Sheinelle returns, for either of those questions.

They might wait a while before naming a news anchor and do what they did in 2016 and 2018, where the co-anchors read the other quick news briefs. Perhaps they planned to name Shinelle for that role, but then, with her family emergency, they pushed it back, or maybe they are just waiting until she returns to decide (or announce)  on that and the third hour.  It is possible that Craig will stop appearing on the 3rd Hour once Shinelle returns. This has been the norm since 2004-2005, and I imagine they will continue.

They should bring Amy Roach back to NBC as a News anchor and a role on Dateline. I know she was fired from ABC, but that had more to do with distraction and how it all played out. The network is owned by Disney, which emphasizes Family.  Perhaps in the MeTOO era (I know it was not technically a MeTOO thing), it made her person non-grata on NBC and CBS, and NBC would probably get criticized for hypocrisy, but it would be a good career redemption.

This is awesome. They used to do stuff like this more regularly. I remember Bob Costas, Jay Leno and Brian Williams to name a few as guest cohosts during the 2000s.

Just awful.

This will put to rest the speculation about why Sheinelle has been absent so much.

It should be another lesson to media writers that they need to stop being 'viewer HR' and that day-to-day work status of TV show hosts is not a story that needs to be reported, and that these people deserve to have private lives and grieve. This is especially cruel because they helped spread the same trash to her Wikipedia article and folks had to edit around vandals that yes, she still works for the show.

So much sympathy for her and her family, and I'm sure everyone at 1A feels the same.

Any reason why the "Saturday" team (Laura Jarrett and Peter Alexander) were both anchoring on a Wednesday today?  It completely threw me for a loop, but even more baffling was that the "voiceover" and graphic at the start of the show still said/displayed "with Savannah Guthrie and Craig Melvin" when Laura and Peter have their own voiceover/graphic that you see on Saturdays.  Man, that is flagrant false advertising!

Because Savannah and Craig are away (either on vacation or on assignment) and Laura and Peter are filling in for them. They want the viewers to know that Savannah and Craig are still the weekday hosts and they will be back.

It’s the middle of the summer. They’re probably on vacation. It’s also Wednesday, the show is still Savannah and Craig why would they change the open?

I can’t tell if this is a joke lol. Is this the first time you’ve watched a television news broadcast?

looks like NBC is launching an 30 minute addition to Saturday Today with Saturday Today Extra. Looks like Saturday Today is going back to 2 full hours. I see it on the channel guide for KING5, WNBC and WXIA so far

I understand it's been a very tough and sad year for Sheinelle and her fmaily, and I sympathize, but is she ever coming back to the TODAY Show and when? Her husband died in May. I understand wanting to take a few weeks after to be with her kids. Katie Couric did not get this much time off. If Shienelle is not coming back, I wish they would say so.

Wow. Not everyone has the same circumstances. No one is owed an explanation or specific timeline for something that is between her and her employer.

Her personal business is not our business.  She deserves her privacy.  That's between her and her employer.  I'm assuming you have never lost a close relative like a spouse, sibling or parent. The time to heal varies person by person and the relationship with the deceased.  With small kids,  I can imagine it's even more complicated.  I hope she is getting the compassion and support she needs from family, friends and colleagues.  It's not any of our business.  I hope when you need it, you have an employer that is patient and supportive as you go through all the different stages of grieving.

There's nothing funny about that Bennett, can we please do anything about them? They don't post anything but inappropriate reactions.

Nope. Still there unfortunately.

There's nothing to laugh about. She's about to return under a very heavy heart and her wound is probably still deep but feels encouraged and okay enough to return.
