Norah handling the inauguration before bowing out is classy on CBS’s part

It's nice of CBS to give Nora the opportunity to cover all of these things, but it would be smart to start building an audience around their two new anchors.

We should have seen Maurice and John together during election coverage. It would also be smart to start increasing their appearances together during the transition and inaugural coverage.

The whole plan is weird. I'm not convinced it's going to last, and I'm not convinced that CBS management thinks this is going to last.

Did Wendy McMahon take Neeraj's place, or is that still vacant? This anchor lineup feels like more of a placeholder idea until there's a clear idea of who's leading the news department. Whoever it is will probably want to put their footprint on it and redo the Evening News, just like what every other former head of the news department has wanted to do.

Maurice is a smooth anchor, don't get me wrong, but is he a national name yet? Does he even have any body of reporting outside the tristate area? Dickerson's not awful, but he's never seemingly been super successful with any chair he's been given, and he's now basically been in them all (mornings, Face the Nation, streaming.)

Indeed it does feel weird. Haven't seen much promotion on air or online for this new arrangement. I don't think I've seen Nora announce (on-air) that she'll be stepping down. Looks like CBS is relying on news articles to spread the word.

Maurice has a body of work outside of the NYC area. He has filled in on the CBS Evening News numerous times over the past decade. Maurice also did a special for BET, and if I'm not mistaken, he's done reports for CBS Sunday Morning. There's no mistaking that he is qualified, I just don't know if pairing him with John Dickerson is the right answer.

Perhaps CBS realizes that the majority of the news audience they have watch streaming instead of broadcast, and in turn are turning to their streaming anchors to be the new face of the division? Can we also hypothesize that DuBois and Dickerson together are probably still less expensive than O'Donnell salary-wise, and CBS is doing it on the cheap realizing no matter what, they are likely to stay in 3rd place?

I'm still confused as to how all this is going to work in practice. Are we going to see a CNN News Central-style show, with Maurice and John standing at opposite ends of the studio? Somehow I can't see them being sat next to each other at a desk, a la Dan Rather and Connie Chung.

Also what about "Margaret Brennan regularly leading coverage from D.C."? Are we talking a glorified White House correspondent role here? Or will she be a de facto third anchor? No one seems to know how the broadcast will look - I suspect perhaps even CBS doesn't know. I think @C Block is right, this is essentially a stopgap until the new head of news comes in and changes things again.

A second half hour of the CBS Evening News, CBS Evening News Plus anchored by John Dickerson, will stream online and air on the CBS O&Os in LA, San Francisco, Sacramento and Miami, concurrent with the CBSEN relaunch on 1/27

What's the point of launching a second half hour when you don't even know if the first is going to work?  Plus, why does Dickerson get to anchor the second half hour solo? Is he even going to appear during the first?

I’m guessing it’s because he had a solo-anchored show on CBS News Streaming before this.

Norah’s last newscast has moved up a day due to golf.

With everything popping off in the news from Jimmy Carter's funeral, to the Trump sentencing, to the LA wildfires, in hindsight this would have been the perfect start for the new news team.

If they aren't already, it would be smart to have either DuBois or Dickerson on the ground reporting from the fires or  the other two major events to ease their audience in.

It's hard to believe this anchor transition is happening in just over two weeks.

CBS did have DuBois on the ground for tonight's CBS Evening News.

Looks like when the new CBS Evening News launches on the 27th, they'll be a graphics refresh of sorts. Also, nice to see a promo where there isn't much focus on the anchors, which kinda makes sense considering the new multi-anchor setup.

NIce... but font-wise, we're already ditching that Mandate huh?

Hopefully its just for the logo, given that Face The Nation, 48 Hours, and 60 Minutes haven't changed anything major on their logos (or just subtle tweaks) since the 2020 rebrand occurred. But, looking at the serif font used, it's the same one used on the CBS News website and app.

I get the impression that the EN is trying to reinvent itself as a newspaper for TV.

Among all the broadcast network evening newscasts, the "CBS Evening News," along with the other CBS News programs, for that matter, has the most stolid and the least sensationalistic feel to them to me, as well.  In some ways, it has reminded me of "PBS NewsHour" for a long time now.

It feels like they will be pulling from fonts, graphics, etc... that currently exist to create the new EN package. That said, I wouldn't be surprise that whatever the end result is, it will align with the website, app, O&Os, etc.. And even if it doesn't, I don't think it will be a big deal given that a change in both graphics and music is to be expected.

That's a perfect way to put it. I don't know if there is a market for long-form story-telling (outside of 60 minutes). I'm curious of what they will come up with.

I think the CBS Evening News may be the best network broadcast, both journalistically and aesthetically. And Nora O'Donnell is polished, polite, and professional. I just don't understand why they are making these talent changes. Well, nevermind, I guess it all comes down to the ratings and the demographics. But I thought Nora otherwise was doing an excellent job. In previous generations, growing up, my preferred news anchors were Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather, and then I transitioned to Peter Jennings.

I do know one thing about this-- it will make it where all three major network broadcasts are from New York again (don't know how long it lasted in Washington with O'Donnell).

They've been in Washington since 2019 so it's been a while!

I saw it on X/Twitter, I don't know if we can trust it. But it looks like this is going to be the new set for the CBS Evening News
