Eight CBS Stations to Ditch CW and Go Independent This Fall

Recommended Posts

But no seriously, HOW WOULD THE FCC APPROVE PUTTING THE CW IN A CABLE CHANNEL AND NOT BE THE CW+? It's not a station, it's a cable network. You just can't put the CW programming in, say, NewsNation, and literally expect the stations that carry the CW to be happy with that knowing that's going on.

Most of the CW's programming would be right at home on a basic cable channel...such as WGN America.

WGN America is gone by now, what's next, put the WGN-TV Chicago feed nationally after September 1st?

Some things were said in here this evening, and the mod team will assess the nitty gritty of these statements, to see if any other action should be taken. In the meantime, I hid/erased the most combative exchanges, and did a little editing as necessary to remove some other remarks. Both users in question have responded to the original version of this post, so I know they're aware of their current standing. Locking the thread isn't happening, for now, as that only punishes the people that still have something to contribute here.

Or maybe because WHDH was/is in a duopoly with WLVI and wanted to keep Channel 56 as the CW affiliate?

In the Research Triangle in North Carolina, WRAL-TV didn't accept some of stuff that CBS wanted them to do so they agreed with WNCN by default.

Same thing goes with WISH-TV and WTTV in Indianapolis.

WRAL and WISH dropped CBS because the network wanted those stations to pay to carry CBS's programs.  WISH went to the CW, but WRAL went back to its original network, NBC, and WNCN became the new CBS affiliate.  The CW affiliate in the Triangle is WLFL, owned by Sinclair.

Oh come on, it's academic. If one actually pays attention, the only reason why WTTV and WNCN are even CBS affiliates is because Tribune (at the time for the former) and Nexstar were willing to paid hefty fees to affiliate with CBS. Paramount held all the cards here and you cannot deny that.

If one actually pays attention...Nexstar did not own WNCN when the CBS affiliate agreement was signed. It was a Media General station. In addition, WNCN hooked up with CBS because WRAL dumped CBS and NBC took the opportunity to pair up with the #1 station in the market. CBS didn't have a lot of options because outside of WRAL/WRAZ and WTVD, the rest of the stations are poorly viewed. WNCN was the best of the worst. That's not to say Media General had a lot of options on their end either. So they were essentially stuck with each other.

And Paramount Global got a hefty payday from a desperate Nexstar. It's a big slice of humble pie from Perry Sook and the other morons at Nexstar corporate that thought they could play pretend media moguls when in reality they couldn't back up their bravado.

Have the terms of the deal been released? Or have you read the agreement?

Also, where would Telemundo go since KCOY-TV gained the CW?

Regarding CBS and WNCN.  Media General offered CBS scale at the time since they were a larger group and WRAL was a one station mom and pop shop.  But in the local market,  WRAL gave NBC the gift of a lifetime in instant ratings success in a market where NBC has suffered eternally while CBS got a good deal with a larger broadcaster that had an also-ran station in the same market.

Moral of the story is that the parent company who paid the network bill is what matters to CBS.  That's what reverse compensation has done to the local station industry.  NBC took a small sacrifice to gain a lot there.

Nowhere, likely just the usual; 480i widescreen CW+ on 12.3 to replace Laff (or 12.4 because 12.1 is SD for some reason), HD on cable/IPTV.

I have a feeling CBS might buy WNCN. No CBS just didn’t want WRAL they wanted money plain and simple and Capitol said go touch grass. CBS only option was WNCN.

So I notice The CW will join WBFS-TV on Labor Day weekend, what will the logo will be and the newscasts are gonna like like since WSFL is entering the final weeks as a soon to be CW station in my hometown of Miami.

Paramount's trying to get the Skydance deal done, and they don't expect that to close until September of next year. So it would surprise me if they were interested in buying any stations.

I'm going to be curious as well. WFOR will probably either move the news on WBFS to 10pm or just cancel it entirely because competing against WSVN 7 at 10pm will be a death sentence for them.

WSFL will probably continue with WPLG's 10pm news in the short-term but cancel them in the long term because of the new Florida Panthers deal and the frequent preemptions that would come with it if it is NOT canceled.

Part of me wonders if they don't care that they'll lose in the ratings, and they just want to see whatever ad revenue they can grab.

CW never did that great in the ratings when CBS co-owned it, and did well financially thanks to Netflix, so they should expect this now.

True—important not to become so entrenched in “what always was” and ignore that other models can be successful.

I am not sure why people keep citing frequent preemptions because of the Florida Panthers deal. Most games start at 7 PM and are over either right at 10 PM or slightly before. So there should be a few preemptions if any at all.

The only preemptions would be when the Panthers are playing road games against the Western Conference.

And presumably extended overtime shootouts?

According to TitanTV, WBFS will move its newscast from 9pm to 10pm, lasting 30 minutes.

It won't last long, which is surprising considering that WPLG has done 10pm news on WSFL for 3 years now.

According to the TitanTV listings on both CBS Detroit & CBS Miami, the first programming they'll show from the CW is The Hill Sunday with Chris Stirewalt which will air at 10AM on WBFS (Miami) & at Noon on WKBD (Detroit). I'll be interested in seeing what kinda rebrand if any will occur, I'd think WKBD would stick with Detroit 50 while WBFS I feel is due for a refresh.
