Eight CBS Stations to Ditch CW and Go Independent This Fall

Cindy Hsu's noon debut! Glad to see her get this position. It also works out well because Chris & Mary probably come around 3:30AM, so having them alternate staying to/past 12:30 PM is a lot.

And I realize that this is possible because WCBS has canceled its 9am news in favor of an hour of Drew Barrymore.

Would they really do a third 'switch' in so many years though? They have a pretty cushy deal now where GBH does all their engineering and it really isn't worth all that effort and cost just for a channel number, and they and WNEU are on the same tower already, while WSBK has a weaker ERP.

Hm. I haven't been paying attention to the repacking; I honestly thought WNEU was still transmitting from NH.

If anything the better deal here would be for PG to get a tax deduction to donate the WSBK license to GBH for $1, WGBX moves there, GBH sells 44 to NBC, they can finally pack the NBC/Telemundo suite of channels on there...which would leave WNEU the odd one out here.

Well, at least you're not saying GBH should sell 2 to NBC just so Boston could have an NBC 2...

Nexstar would probably like to take WKBD and WBFS in order to shore up their scheduled-to-return CW affiliations, but they're capped right now.

Nexstar would have to sell off a few stations in order to acquire any additional stations they see as lucrative and keep WPIX.

More than a few.

WPIX's reach alone is probably about 6 percent.  That's bigger than a lot of the smaller groups total reach.

And it's full value since they're on VHF.

And today at the end of CBS News Miami at 9pm the new time slot was announced, and with it the likely new brand of WBFS

So is WBFS/WFOR the only duopoly to keep CW in the group?

KRON is already a MyNetwork Affiliate unless KICU (KTVU Plus) picks up the affiliation

The good news is that this did happen and KICU picked up MyNet...

for 3am-5am, which is the bad news. You might as well not even call them an affiliate of MNTV at this case, or even an O&O.

Another point that Fox doesn’t care about MyNetworkTV anymore. Put it into graveyard slot showing that they are on slow death.

For all intents and purposes, stations that show MNT are essentially Independents.

Yet... WPWR and WWOR ignore the rule (for now).

At least they have their existence acknowledged by Fox, unlike KCOP, or "Fox 11 Plus". Just awaiting the eventual day they move it to 11.2 and channel 13 just becomes LiveNow 24/7 or the Best of Tubi (wouldn't make sense to rebrand MNTV as something Tubi-adjacent or just put stuff from it on instead)?

At least that would be first run content, at least for those who don't bother to put a free app on their TV.

Maybe they should rebrand kcop and put more local news on the station.  If another company like Disney which owns kabc owned kcop, they would probably add more newscasts to kcop.

Otherwise, fox should put or produce more shows like tmz on kicop.

Maybe they could put on... (beat) ...more cop shows.

I mean, it already has the call letters for it...

CMIIW, but the call sign for KCOP-TV meant for the defunct Copley Press.

I really think that CWMiami and CWDetroit would be "tighter." Tacking the channel number at the end is a mouthful.

Exactly. Why not just say CW 33 Miami? Significantly smoother.  CBS is also terrible at wordy brandings. And the call letters and license city don't need to be at the bottom of the logo, it's an eyeful.

The FCC would beg to differ. At least they still *have* the rule that stations must properly ID themselves by their call letters and COL at/as close to the top of the hours as possible, even if stations basically show them in almost-illegible mouseprint.

I myself tend to refer to their stations by their call letters, regardless of the station's branding. "6abc" will always be WPVI (or just "Channel 6") to me, for example.

That's not what @MediaZone4K is talking about. Nobody is saying they shouldn't do the TOTH ID, but it looks clunky and excessive when on the omnipresent in-show bug.

This is (sadly) probably why stations now always do their station ID in mouseprint, so that they don't make it (even more) intrusive as it is. I don't even think the way that it's displayed here is intrusive in the least. (It bothers me more when stations do their TOTH legal ID in mouseprint, when it *should* be more prominent.)

These decisions tend to be made at the station level, so it's not like our opinions are going to sway their decisions about a graphic that is mostly inconsequential in the long run, especially if we don't live in the area in question.
