Even I forget sometimes that WPLG is no longer part of Graham... ...so BH Media was not grandfathered in like it was with Graham and WJXT. From the getgo, WJXT AND WJCW were both available on YTTV because Graham made that deal before they launched. WPLG's divestiture was several years before YTTV existed, so they only had their ABC affiliation as a key to get them on the streaming services. Getting retransmission payments based on a hyper-local news presence may be a disaster in the making, so they will probably opt for "must-carry" status to keep themselves on pay TV providers. By doing so does lessen their leverage to get on "channel 10", but the way cable and satellite TV work nowadays (being all digital), there's really no excuse not to be, unless the providers want to purposely stick it to them by denying that channel slot.3 points

Already mentioned that issue. More than likely, it'll be ABC Miami over WPLG.2 points

I would also wonder what this means for the channel’s carriage in the Caribbean. I was in Montego Bay, Jamaica last year for a family vacation and Flow carries the Miami locals, including WPLG. Same thing for ABC Miami.2 points

Don't care what anyone says, or how good they try to make it. Full VR sets are really lame.2 points

Significantly cheaper using a green screen. Less space needed, fewer stage hands. I assume the set used for Christmas is in storage the rest of the year.2 points

There's no official Gray thread, so I'll start one with the flurry of deals that happened today: http://www.tvnewscheck.com/article/86603/gray-in-4-new-deals-closes-3-earlier-ones1 point

They probably had no choice in the matter as YTTV, Hulu and Fubo were under no obligation to continue carrying an independent station. And why would they? It's only a matter of time before Berkshire Hathaway puts WPLG up for sale in a liquidation.1 point

WPLG being dropped from YouTubeTV, Hulu, etc. at the start isn't surprising. The network negotiates the retransmission consent rights for all the affiliates. So, WPLG was covered by the agreement ABC made with Google. No ABC. No agreement for Local 10. They will have to hammer out deals with all the vMVPDs. To be honest, not being on YouTubeTV isn't the end of the world. While it is the largest platform of its kind by far, it has about 9.4 million subs nationwide. There are 125 million TV households in America. So YouTubeTV has about 7% of the national population. Let's assume that a metropolitan area like Miami skews slightly higher than, say, a rural Midwest market where internet connectivity may be slower. Even if YouTubeTV has 8 or 9% of the Miami market, WPLG can survive. But it might be enough to shave off just enough viewers to cause some pain. On the flipside, WSVN's ABC feed is immediately covered by all ABC agreements once that feed is live. It will be interesting to see if it is up and running on day one. (It should be since they have had plenty of lead time)1 point
-
I'm gonna be curious about that myself. At first, I suspect ABC won't be immediately available, but there will be time before they shuffle everything along, at which point ABC will be available. This move will also affect WPLG internationally via the Bahamas, USVI, or other places that carry it for the ABC feed.1 point

Just a lazy oversight, there's another tab further up the page that's also had it wrong since day one of the web refresh.1 point

Either that or they just figured that while they had their news set in the smaller studio, it wasn't worth it to try to move to the bigger one. Or, I don't know if KGO operated this way, but perhaps they rented out the larger studio to other outside productions. KTVU did that – KTVU rented out their much larger Studio A to other productions (including the filming of Mrs. Doubtfire) before they finally moved their main news set into there in 2012.1 point

Sounds like WCPM to me. I recognize their instrumentation and the overlay of the EWN sig is peak laziness indicating WCPM.1 point

I think KGO's set is really underrated. It has almost everything you'd ever need in a set: a nice home base, a distinct weather area, a unique interview/demo area, and a few different reporter standup positions. The topical graphics that they put in the monitors also always look really sharp. Even though it's pushing eight years old, it has held up very well. If that set debuted today, I think we'd all compliment it. The only thing that's a shame is that they didn't install a larger version of it in the studio that they gave away to KRON instead.1 point

I think KFSN's recent update is nice... WLS isn't too bad either... KABC and WLS debuted fairly close to each other in Fall 2015...1 point

One year & a day after WLS first rolled out the full graphics package, we have a theme update at WTVD. It's Eyewitness News, but it's nothing we're familiar with.1 point

Funny enough KABC was really late to the NS2000+ scene...didn't pick it up until around 1990, so only had it about 4 years. Before that it was Cool Hand Luke opens plus their own synth version of Cool Hand Luke for the bumpers and close dating back to the mid 80s. For this month's update maybe there was some research or thought that the teletype sound has some brand equity among Angelinos or nostalgia among the staff. At least when they ran their anniversary clips I remember something about the Cool Hand Luke music being in there more than I thought it would. Going back to 99 when WABC picked up v2 of the EWN package they really amped up the teletype sound that got diminished when they moved from the CHL based package in 94.1 point

The 1999 WABC cut might not be the perfect choice for KABC, but I think it’s a lot better than what they had been using.1 point
-
I agree. This package was an upgrade for the visually stunted WABC but a downgrade for KABC & KGO that already had solid appearances. I did like that the ABC O&Os — despite duplicating ABC 7 Eyewitness News in multiple cities —let each station still maintain some uniqueness. As someone said, the average viewer doesn't care... but us niche crowd comes here to harpe about these things lol.1 point

You're right. Valid points, @24994J Yeah overall the new look is amazing for KABC the graphics are stellar and spectacular there are still some kinks they gotta fix like the audio in some of the closes and opens also the transitions can be a bit too fast but i'm sure they'll work those out over the coming weeks. I guess when it come to the music theme, on the flipside, when I visit LA, I won't feel too homesick since I'll hear the familiar theme there too. And the Angelinos can feel the same when they visit us here in New York ;). In summary from the colors which can't be changed per the mandate as suggested, and the wild choice to adopt WABC's music, it doesn't change their product and who they are, along with the amazing talent that both stations employ to deliver an excellent news product making them the top news stations in the country. Al Primo is a pioneer in this format of local news delivery and to this date remains successful. In a way it goes back to the old days when all of the ABC O&O stations were using the Cool Hand Luke and News Series 2000+ theme, in retrospect that is what it is now low-key reminiscent of with KABC/WABC now on the same theme. The two stations in a way are now united and their tenacious spirit can now be felt coast to coast. I've even seen WABC use the "Eyewitness News" titular wordmark that KABC/WLS uses in some of their promos so it is all a shared resource and the days of being unique and individual are behind, as the world becomes more and more connected. Bravo to all the O&Os, overall I think out of all of them, the ABC look is the best!1 point

All of this. I'm not seeing why it matters how different stations in different markets having the same general look and feel is an issue. Viewers aren't watching out of market news. And for the fraction of a fraction of people who travel to the other city and happen to watch the news there, that has no negative impact.1 point

It was a pretty flat out rollout pretty straight and basic.1 point

Not bad, but you can hardly see the yellow elements... Does indeed reflect of WABC a little too much...1 point

I’m going to miss the “California Look.” KABC was polished and bright, KFSN got the discount look since the font styles never matched, then later adopted the KGO “LIVE” bug by making it bigger than KABC’s version. KGO had the best color execution keeping it neutral (Royal Blue, Grey and Black) it was simple package that I wished that rolled out to the station group, it was pretty much nothing extravagant, easy to read and just a plain wallpaper with diagonal lines that would revolve looking like a cash register belt, no flashy animations and sweeping effects that we see now with all these boxes and large lower thirds that they adapted from WPVI and WABC. the weather graphics varied with KABC, KGO and KFSN, they could’ve done better but I do like the new weather graphics now that they are using.1 point

And with that, that'll take care of the transition of ABC O&O's to unified news graphics just like the other Big 4 O&O's.1 point

The fact they introduced it while in a police chase is so Los Angeles. Also, that graphics are really AMAZING.1 point

I wonder why with all the stations, the main 2 colors that I see during their newscast are blue and white with the graphics. Why is that?1 point

Looks like KABC is ready to debut.1 point

When it does run, that slight misalignment gets my OCD going. But the average person is not going to notice. I also don't think they need to do quite as much with the animations in the top of the newscasts. The three segments of the bar representing the three stories before the "big story" is fine, but it doesn't need to animate out and then back in with each teaser.1 point

Loving the Palm Trees! Normally used to trees if it’s for windy forecasts. Very unique and local.1 point

Maybe they are going to get the ultimate look of the package, KABC has always been pretty top tier with their on-air appearance, I remember when their current graphics rolled out how crisp and wonderful it was at the time and still is pretty good, but it has shown its age at this point so we'll have to see how. But at this point, each station's on-air adoption of this package has been uniquely tailored and looks great so can't go wrong.1 point

On KABC, I have only seen the new graphics on a handful of promos for syndicated programming, which I've seen now for the past few months. I am surprised that they have not ended up on its newscasts by now, though.1 point

I have no first hand insights. But KABC has traditionally introduced new promos every year for its newscasts around the date of the Academy Awards, which is always a major day for the station (with many hours of station-produced programming before and after the national ABC broadcast) as Los Angeles is the home base for the Oscars. So, perhaps, the new O&O graphics will be unveiled on or around March 10th?1 point

Agree. It gives the show a lot more depth and looks so much better visually. Don’t know why they can’t go back to on set every week.1 point

Super interesting how the open has the live time and temp baked into it. Look closely and you'll see it said 3:59 and 61°. It even has a glimpse of the forecast. That has to be a first.1 point

I’m not sure about that; the intro cut of music has the NS2000 signature tacked on at the end. It sounds as if it’s an old cut that’s never been used by anyone before. EDIT: Here’s the video1 point
